Charming secluded cottage
We felt like we were staying in work of art. The owners are both exceptional artist and in shows in every aspect of this home.

Peaceful Christmas Week
The property is remote, which is what we were looking for. It is a beautiful cottage in a remote and quite location. It is about a 15 minute drive to Ashland along a twisty, but well maintained, and scenic road. The hosts are great and we really enjoyed our stay!

Absolutely lovely
Gorgeous cottage in a beautiful spot. Tom and Margaret are great hosts and answered every question I had. The craftsmanship is stunning and the cottage is well-equipped with the essentials. The perfect spot if you want access to town and theater but prefer a more rural environment and proximity to great hiking. Couldn’t recommend it more highly!

An Artful experience!
A very special experience to not only stay in this beautifully designed dwelling with custom wood furnishings & fine handmade textiles through out. Yet, an opportunity to meet the artists/hosts and learn their story! It’s dreamy, and the quiet mountainous environment, in a comfortable & well equipped cabin, near theaters, great restaurants, wineries, shopping & hiking/biking and more, My spouse and I enjoyed it all, and we look forward to returning to this affordable special place. Just wonderful!

Beautiful Cottage, Prickly Hosts
My daughter and I stayed at the cottage for 5 days in July 2012. The cottage, décor, location were beautiful. I had originally booked for 3 people, but it turned out my son could not join us. We paid an extra fee for having a third person, but the owners were unwilling to refund the fee when only two of us showed up. For this reason, I would never recommend staying here to my friends. It is just plain bad business.

Nicest cottage ever!
We stayed in this ever so cute cottage for 3 nites. The grounds were wild and secluded. The house was cute and comfortable. The custom wood work, copper work, quilts and pottery were amazing. Oh to have this house for my own! It's perfect if you don't mind the 20 minute drive up the hill from downtown Ashland, which we didn't. I'm not sure 4 people would fit comfortably. And we were a little disappointed that the internet was sparse (reading emails & web browsing was OK...but no streaming or downloading), and there was no cell signal. Other than that, it was perfect! I would recommend it for a romantic getaway, not for young children or older people who may have trouble climbing the stairs to the bedroom or who might have trouble driving the dark roads at night.

Experienced travelers
The Arty Cottage: It is gorgeous, remote and nice on the eyes. The bed upstairs is very cozy and comfortable. But like every super model, there is more than just beauty when you are looking for a suitable accommodation. This property is 20-25 minutes from Ashland. Furishings are mostly made my hand and impeccable. The loveseat is pretty small and it was hard for two people to get comfortable at once. The lighting is dim throughout the cottage which gave these 50 year old eyes a work out. Be sure to bring your own shampoo/condtioner/lotions and potions, as they do not provide such. Despite these inconveniences the Arty Cottage is one of a kind, exclusive, pristine remote retreat. I even checked out for a cat-nap on the deck (The expanse of the deck is almost the size of the cottage) in the lovely 84 degree October afternoon, before attending a Shakespeare play. Arty Cottage: Prepare for showpeice elegance!

Impressive craftsmanship, a quiet, rural setting and a fair number of rules
The cottage is located about 8 miles outside of Ashland in the hills/country. It is incredibly quiet out there. Without a doubt, the furniture and furnishings are all very artistic and made with impressive craftsmanship. We could understand and appreciate the owners wanting their cottage rental cared for. That being said though, we did find the notes scattered around the house a bit overwhelming, and the do's and don'ts made us unable to fully relax in this space. I am a fastidious home owner myself, but I didn't enjoy having to do even more work in this rental than I do in my own home. While beautiful to look at, we didn't really understand why surfaces were used in the kitchen and bathrooms that can't take some water being on them. And being provided a separate washcloth to remove any and all personal hygiene products that might stain the towels was a bit much. We have rented Home Away properties around the country and in Canada, and the check-out procedures for this rental were the most lengthy of any we have ever encountered. We've never before been asked to wipe out the refrigerator or to clean the stove top, and we don't remember being asked to empty the recycling bin/trash cans elsewhere. Despite the fact this list is provided in the cottage's binder of information, another copy was stuck in the door the night before we were to check out (I guess just to be sure we didn't miss it). We really didn't spend much time at the ArtYCottage because of all that we did while in the area, and, for us, that was a good thing because we didn't feel wholly comfortable in this home.

4/10 Poor

Jesper S.

Peaceful, nicely furnished. Strict rules about dogs should be communicated in advance.
This is a very nicely furnished home in a quiet location. We enjoyed the quiet, the deer right off the porch, and the lovely furniture. But the owners are right in saying in response to other reviews that this place is not for everyone. Two downsides: 1) We had read the earlier review about the many little signs about taking good care of the woodwork, etc., but it was still surprising how much the house feels like a cross between a showroom and a vacation rental. The little note asking us to use a (provided) cheap washcloth to remove facial products etc. so as not to stain the provided washcloths etc. seemed a little much (the washcloths were grey colored fabric anyway). Similarly, having to worry about keeping a bathroom vanity counter dry because the wood is not waterproofed is a bit odd, especially when the chosen sink fixtures are elegant but splash a lot. We didn't use the grill because the cleanup required would have made it not worth it. 2) We were very glad that the cottage allows dogs, and were happy to pay the additional fees. It was therefore very disappointing to show up to a long list of rules about having dogs in the house, especially since these were not communicated in advance. We paid extra to be allowed to bring pets and were disappointed that the pets were supposed to be invisible. Dogs were not allowed upstairs; were not allowed on the furniture; were not allowed in the beds; were not allowed to be left alone. We would not have rented the place if we had known this in advance, because our dogs are not trained to stay off the furniture etc. A lot of people, like us, come to Ashland to see plays at OSF -- to discover that dogs are not to be left in the house alone creates a problem! And the suggestion to board them by the hour is helpful but not helpful because the recommended kennel is 30 minutes away, north of Ashland (and we don't like to board our dogs, especially at a strange place). So if you wanted to go to dinner or a show, suddenly it would be a major excursion. The policies are justified in the documents in the house by saying that they also rent to people who don't have pets and don't want dog hairs etc. Fair enough, but then what is the pet fee for if not cleaning? Owners can set their own rules but they should be made clear in advance, either on the posting or when a renter inquires about bringing a dog.

Beautiful Artsy Cottage
Very nice, fun, well laid out, high quality, cottage in the woods with beautiful, hand made furnishings, bedding and much of the construction components. Very brave to rent this beauty out! Especially great if you're into hiking and biking. Great trails just outside the door! Plan on unplugging here, our phones really didn't work. Probably a good thing! We highly recommend.

harmony with art and nature
Every perspective from the loft-cabin offers tranquility whether it be the view on the soft edge of a handcrafted piece of wooden furniture or handmade quilt or the a view of grazing deer on the slope out the window. Lovely place to call home for a few days with gracious and hugely talented artists as hosts.. Highly recommended.

Many Thanks!
I spent close to a month at the cottage and was sad to leave. Such a magical place! The last review I submitted I focused on the cottage and the environment. This review I would like to focus on how understanding Tom and Margaret were about the special needs of my dog. I saw a review where someone was complaining about the situation with their dogs and my experience was very different. I found Tom and Margaret to be as concerned about Lilly’s stay as they were about mine. Many Thanks!

Artistry in a home.
This has to be the best vacation rental ever. Tom and Margaret are both master artisans and the “Arty Cottage” truly reflects this. What a charming, visually stunning, soulful place they have created. Spending time out on the deck is like being in a tree house. Just sublime!

Fantastic getaway!
We absolutely loved our stay at ArtYCottage. The cottage itself is a masterpiece-breathtaking and inspiring! We had so much fun exploring the area. The location was perfect-about a 15 minute drive into downtown Ashland, close to several lakes, hiking trails, Willow Whit Ranch right up the road, etc. Margaret and Tom were excellent hosts. Sadly, we were so busy exploring we didn't get to take them up on the offer to tour the wood shop they have-next time!

A peaceful getaway in the aesthetically enriched cottage
Art is ubiquitous in this peaceful cottage, seven miles away and a thousand feet above in the eastern hills near Ashland. Tom and Margaret have infused the cottage with the fruits of their artistic crafts: filigrees of iron, tightly joined woodworking, copper sinks and open piping, unique hand-made furniture, colorful felt coasters and bowls, and the comfort of knitted and woven quilts, bedding, and pillows. Morning light fills the cottage, while evening light lingers long after the sun sets on the ridge above you. It is a refuge, but Ashland’s plays, shops, and restaurants are only twenty minutes away. A drive up the ridge and away from Ashland brings you to the south entrance of Crater Lake in an hour and a half. The arty cottage is a welcome getaway, but it also a place to stay when you want to get to the Ashland theaters.

Arty Cottage: A Singular Experience
What a wonderful week my husband and I enjoyed at Arty Cottage! Despite the occasional rain showers, we managed a little hiking, took numerous breathtaking photos, enjoyed a performance of Henry IV at OSF, did our first snowshoeing on Mt. Ashland (it snowed on us!) and opted to do the Costco thing in nearby Medford the day before heading home, thinking there's always next year to see Crater Lake and take the Dagoba Organic Chocolate tasting tour when we return for another stay. A highlight for us A Singular Experiencewas meeting the charming and talented hosts who are responsible for all of the eye candy in Arty Cottage. It's a pleasure to just hang out in the cottage where everywhere you look or sit, a feast of color, shape, line and texture beg your senses for response. These imaginative artists are only too happy to show you their work spaces where they create their one-of-a-kind furniture and finery. Though Arty Cottage is a ways from downtown Ashland, (6+ mi.) the drive is lovely and the quiet peace and wildlife viewing more than compensate. If you want to cook for yourselves, the kitchen is well equipped; if you don't, great restaurants abound in town. We two old folks give Arty Cottage 4 thumbs up!

Beyond charming
This is our second time enjoying the magic and beauty of Arty Cottage. It is truly a privilege to stay at Arty Cottage. The location is perfect for us, just 15 minutes up the hill from Ashland, quiet and peaceful and offers wonderful walks before going in to town for the theatre. We will happily stay at ArtyCottage during our visits to Ashland.

Oh so yummy!
I knew from pictures and reviews that I wanted to check this place out but, I had no idea how wonderful it would be. There really aren't words to fully describe the beauty of the workmanship of the cabin, the furnishings and the quilts. The comfort level was another indescribable wonder--so cozy! I wish I were less honest because I'd really like to say it was awful so I could be sure it was available the next time I was in Ashland, but that would be selfish, so: my advice is to just go experience this jewel of a place. Side note: The winery down the road is worth a visit, as well! Oh, and bring your binoculars if you're a birder--lots to see!

I am a custom furniture builder and a welder. I love dogs. I live on the property with my wife and daughter. I love hiking and animals especially dogs. I like being close to nature so living and working on 4 acres just out side Ashland is ideal. I can walk out my front door and take a quiet hike or go to town and see a play.

Why they chose this property

We chose Ashland because it's beautiful and rural but also offers a lot of culture. It is big in the arts and we are artists. We remodeled a little house on our property with the idea that people can go on vacation and stay in an 'arty environment'.

What makes this property unique

While staying at the ArtYCottage you can expierence fine art such as custom furniture, metal work and textiles that you can order or purchase, cook a great meal in a state of the art kitchen, soak in the tub, relax on the deck up in the trees or walk out the front door and take a quite relaxing hike or in winter you can ski. Hiking, boating and fishing are all close by. A short drive will take you to Ashland where you have the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, Cabaret Theatre, Oregon Stage wrorks for plays, many good restaurants, wineries galore, shopping, galleries and Lithia Park. Jacksonville just down the road has the Britt out door music festival all summer
