About this property

Beautiful Estate Nestled in the Blueridge Near Bluemont Wine Country

Visit and stay at this beautiful 1896 French country estate nestled in Blueridge Mountains wine country just 50 miles west of Washington D.C.. Wrought iron front entrance gates, walking paths through meadows and forest, 15 acres of prairie and old hardwoods atop Blueridge Mountain Road, a large stone fire pit, Adirondacks chairs and patio daybeds looking toward the Shenandoah valley, flower and vegetable gardens and raised beds, large outdoor patio spaces and a 100 year old stone Manor House make this the perfect location for family events, wedding parties, retreats or other small gatherings. Not a venue for weddings, this is rather the location for smaller gatherings such as the wedding party/family residence, or the family rehearsal dinner / post-wedding brunch. Perfect for author, artist or small retreats, weekend hunting or fishing excursions, or a special family get-away. An eclectic antique furniture, art and book collection, an easel in the sunroom, a vinyl record collection, tastefully decorated work spaces, and lots of privacy make this a wonderful retreat. Sleeping 8-10, the property also includes an Old Schoolhouse sleeping another 2 people and a Country French Cottage sleeping 4. The entire property is bookable by contacting the Owner/Manager to discuss schedule. Early planning recommended as this venue fills quickly. This is NOT a venue for college parties or other wild events. Owner manages the property closely.

Beautiful grounds

This was a great spot for our family. We enjoyed being outside on the property and at some of the nearby hiking trails and breweries. No need to bring any supplies, every detail seemed to be taken care of. We will definitely go back if we are in the area.

Lovely stay with family

Beautiful property that takes you back in time, yet with all the modern amenities. We enjoyed baking and cooking meals in the well-equipped kitchen, eating together on the spacious dining area, playing board games and taking walks. The sun room has beautiful views of gorgeous sunsets. Raven Rocks hike is nearby for those up for an adventure.

Lovely home in the mountains of Virginia

We enjoyed our stay at Teri’s lovely home and was happy she had even decorated for Christmas. The property was very quiet and the home was clean and even offered toiletries in the bath rooms. The only small inconvenience was the wifi was poor reception with our I-pads and phones but that can be expected in a mountainous region.

Fantastic New Year's Getaway with Friends, Perfect Distance from DC

Great, expansive property that was perfect for our New Year's Eve with friends and infants. The property is very close to DC and nestled very close to many breweries and wineries. The property also hosts some incredible sunsets! Teri was communicative and we had no issues. Would book location again!

Excellent weekend

We are a group of four couples and the house was perfect for us. We took advantage of the numerous nearby hiking trails, breweries and wineries. Everyone was very happy with their accommodations and the well stocked kitchen. Definitely recommend the property and the area. We’ve been having this annual weekend getaway for 18 years and everyone agreed this is the favorite house to date.

Shared property experience

A beautiful property in a communal setting within its gate. Contrary to what is communicated on the VRBO website, other guests were also staying on the property while we were renting. Since we were traveling with our dog and were concerned with car traffic and open gates, it took some extra communication with other guests to assure the safety of our dog during our stay.

Beautiful country home

We absolutely loved our time in Bluemont at this beautiful country home. There was plenty of space for us to spread out and relax and we made good use of the hammock and fire pit! We really appreciated that our little dog could come along too! The beds were incredibly comfortable and the home was well stocked with cookware, wine glasses, etc. my only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer!

Ideal Getaway

The property was ideal for a weekend getaway with friends lots to do close by - or not! We hiked and explored the area (highly recommend watching the grinding of grits and corn at the mill in Millwood). But, we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery while hanging out by the fire pit. The kitchen was lacking nothing and the bedrooms are all nice-sized with a view. It was all easy, relaxing and fun. Really stunning property with a very gracious host and owner. Gracie was a bonus :)

The owner even set up a Christmas tree with decor as well as outside lights. To top it off we left this morning on our travel back to Rosemary Beach Florida with 4 inches of snow wish we had one more day to build a snowman!!! Great Estate for Groom’s Family Base Camp

We just hosted 15 members of our family for our son’s wedding in Purceville, VA over the Labor Day Weekend. High Meadows provided a beautiful backdrop for the occasion and it was well suited for such a large gathering. Other than the bathroom/shower situation, which our guest were able to manage with relative ease, everything was perfect. Our hostess, Teri, was absolutely awesome to work with. I booked more than a year in advance so had plenty of opportunities to interact with her as I made plans and adjusted for our guests’ needs. She was very responsive and accommodating. The location is great too, near wineries, breweries, as well as great shopping and dining. I am thinking we will plan another trip when we can slow down and enjoy the property more.

a perfect 4 days in a storybook setting!

This property was perfect for our visit to Northern VA for our daughter's wedding! It felt like we were visiting the English countryside, which was appropriate, since our daughter had been living in London for the past year. The house (the Manor) had so much charm and character. It was clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. It felt like a dream waking up there in the morning, and heading outside to walk the property, including through the meadow. The weather was perfect, and cool enough for us to enjoy dinner outside, under the lights. Even though it was close to the places we needed to go, including Leesburg, it felt like we were in our own little world. I can't remember the last time I was so sad to leave a Vrbo, and I hope we make it back! My husband did all the booking & communicating with the owner; she was pleasant to work with and quick to respond.

Charming home in storybook setting

Our group of 6 with pups couldn't have found a better gem for our autumn cabin getaway. The owner Teri was helpful and communicative from the start and provided every amenity we could possibly desire. For example, there were 5 different ways/devices to make coffee! And we enjoyed her collection of various wine glass styles for in-home tastings. The house is rustic, yet modern and filled with personal touches throughout such modern magazines, fancy toiletries, candy, and a kitchen stocked with spices. We enjoyed watching the leaves fall in the autumn fog from her 270 degree windowed porch, walking the stunningly beautiful property, sipping hot cider and cozying up to a fire in the massive outdoor pit. We truly enjoyed this home and all agreed to make this an annual visit!

Perfect Stay in mountains of VA

Our week long stay was amazing, thanks to Teri, her husband and this beautiful property and the surroundings. This peaceful home allows for relaxation, comfy nights sleep, delicious food prepared in the well stocked kitchen, gorgeous views. House was clean and comfortable as can be. Pictures were accurate, the house was even larger than we thought. Plenty of spaces for togetherness and solitude for our group. We were lucky enough to meet the owners, who were delightful, full of interesting knowledge, and very accommodating. Easy communication, check in/out was a breeze, they supplied what we asked for, and provided all kinds of extras for a wonderful stay. Teri even went so far as to locating a misplaced item we may have left behind. They are the consummate hosts and know how to provide a lovely place to build memories!! There are smaller cottages on the grounds for additional rentals if you need extra lodging or flexibility in number of guests, some were rented during our stay but we were never disturbed in any way but other renters presence. Just a fabulous property. Many activities in the area for all kinds of fun, in all kinds of weather. Highly recommend, we hope to be back!!

About the host

Hosted by Teri Dunphy

Host profile image
This family owned and operated property has been in the hands of only a few families over the generations — since its construction in 1896 as a retreat for elite Washingtonians to escape the summer heat of the city. Before cars, Washington families took the train to the Snickersville stop in the foothills of the Blueridge Mountains, in the Village of Bluemont, transporting children, nannies and summer belongings up the mountain road to the cooler High Meadows. It is described as “The Land of the Lotus Eaters” from Ulysses’ Odyssey; a truly peaceful and magical land in which to loose oneself.

http://bluemontva.org/article20150826VillageTOURMAP.html

Why they chose this property

High Meadows is evidenced by its date stone on the southwest corner, High Meadows was constructed in 1896. It was built for Elizabeth Somers, of the Georgetown area of Washington— principal of the Mount Vernon Seminary, a Georgetown girls’ school.

Several later residents appear to have had associations with Mount Vernon Seminary.
Hugh Rowland, a prominent Georgetown attorney, acquired the property in 1920 and spent time there with his two daughters.

The massive stone house that stands on 12 acres is a testament to the skilled local stone masons, as well as the availability of high quality granite for construction. An illustration in a contemporary 10-page pamphlet published by the Passenger Department of the Southern Railway (soon to be the Washington & Old Dominion), shows “the mountain residence of Mrs. Elizabeth Somers.”

A one-story, hip-roofed, stone and frame building—referred to as “the schoolhouse”—suggests that Sommers, with her skills as a school principal, planned to use or did use the building as a local school. Gilbert Fowler, who died several years ago at the age of 92, and who came to the Mountain circa 1916, recalled attending a small stone school on Route 605.

The property contains a stone machine shed and barn. The open yard is well landscaped with mature specimen trees and is surrounded by dry-laid stone fences with square stone gateposts marking the entrances.

High Meadows lies directly adjacent to Eagle Rock Farm, another home on the tour.

What makes this property unique

High Meadows is a 1896 large stone historic home (see above link) situated on 50 acres of meadowland atop the Blueridge Mountains. It is walking distance to the Appalachian Trail and a short walk or drive to Bluemont wine and craft breweries and the historic villages of Harpers Ferry, Middleburg and Upperville. High Meadows is 50 short miles west of Washington D.C.. It is perfect for wedding parties, rehearsal dinners and Sunday brunches. A retreat for artists, authors or corporate executives wishing to combine business and the outdoors (hunting, fishing, hiking, kayaking, biking and other). The Owner will work with guests to arrange local activities on a bespoke basis. Beautifully appointed rooms, artwork, an easel and canvasses, extensive outdoor patio and meadow space, an extensive book collection and a vinyl record player and record collection all add to the mystique of this very private high mountain retreat. Two additional structures on the property add to capacity and can be booked separately; one an Old Stone Schoolhouse that has been converted into a small living space and one A Country French (Caretakers) Cottage. Photos can be sent separately.
