About this property

• CASA NICU • traditional cottage at the Carpathian foothills in Transylvania

• CASA NICU • The Methuselah among our holiday rentals has seen 120 years passing by without being overly impressed. During extensive renovations we left the basic substance untouched, and now the breath of the past still blows through the patient walls. This cottage is a good choice for anybody wishing to add a touch of Transylvanian serenity to their lives.
The farmhouse is situated in the shepherd's village of Vale, directly at the foot of the Carpathian Mountains. On the one hand, far away from the pulse of time, on the other hand just around the corner from Sibiu, the European Capital of Culture 2007. The village is nestled between the wooded mountains overlooking the Transylvanian plain - in an absolutely peaceful spot with no through traffic. After a short walk you already find yourself in the oldest beech forest on the continent and will experience a unique flora and fauna on your way up to the mountain meadows. Alternatively, benefit from our central location in the heart of Romania and explore sights and trips in all directions.
We are no trained tourism experts. We live in Vale and have joined together in a small and family-type construction company, with which we worked on several holiday homes. Without hurry, but with attention to detail and respect towards the traditional style of the area, as well as with a view to modern building materials and contemporary housing needs. The result are two sophisticated villas, a shepherd's hut in the mountain meadows and two former farms that received a complete overhaul. Today we can offer you an encounter of different ages and cultures in seven oases of wellbeing, each of them with their own flair, distinctive and special in a place which – we hope – will be sidestepped by the world's hustle for a long time to come.
Our other cottages you can find also on Homeaway or briefly presented below.

••• CASA NICU •••

Viewed from the outside, this farmhouse is certainly not the only eye-catcher in Transylvania. But whoever crosses the threshold will feel and see its uniqueness. We handled every square meter with attention to detail and respect towards its builders and the traditional style of the area.

The living quarters are located upstairs. A staircase leads out to the hallway, which was added to the house in a typical way. Both the shower room (2 sqm) and the eat-in kitchen (14 sqm) are entered through the hallway. The kitchen is completely equipped for self-catering, with a fridge, gas stove, coffee maker, and espresso machine, as well as a toaster, kettle, spices, washing machine and more. Upon request, we provide you with breakfast, traditional menus or farm products from the village.
The room (18 sqm) is entered through the kitchen. It features a double bed, TV set (Astra Satellite), Wi-Fi internet access, and plants. Three windows open the room and the view onto the village’s rooftops. An extra bed is available. On arrival, you will find the bed freshly made, and hand and bath towels, shower gel, and soap are also available.
The entire interior was chosen with care and is of high quality, including kitchen and sanitation facilities, linen, and mattress. To heat the rooms, you use the water-bearing tiled stove that also supplies all the radiators in the premises. Additionally, an electrical infrared panel will start up at no additional costs for you.
The enclosed courtyard is a leafy feast for the eyes. Here you can relax on a covered terrace, uncork a bottle of wine or unpack the card game. Or walk a few steps to the slope above the village, enjoy the vastness of the valley, and you'll be surprised about the thoughts popping up in your mind out of nowhere.

• Transylvania farmhouse, sleeps 2 (up to 3)
• 1 room, 1 eat-in kitchen, 1 shower room
• Covered patio in the courtyard
• Minimum stay: 3 - 5 nights (seasonal)
• Extra bed for a 3. person: 12 €/night
• Pet: 9 €/night

••• We offer more than just accommodation •••

• Transfer from the Sibiu airport or railway station is included, and a reliable rental car you can order directly with us.
• On request, our cook provides breakfast or swings the wooden spoon. She conjures traditional menus fresh to the table by appointment - each gram of meat a product of her own livestock farming. Vegetarian? No problem.
• Also available are farm products from the village, such as fresh milk, goat or sheep's cheese, forest honey and homemade jam, zakusca, pickled vegetables, wine and schnaps.
• On request: baby cot, high chair, rides in a donkey cart for children, grocery shopping prior to your arrival.
• Tip: Excursion in a horse-drawn cart to the mountains. The tour can take a few hours or an entire day. On the way, you stop at a creek and Nicu (our Carpathian specialist) prepares a shepherd goulash in the kettle on the camp fire.

••• The village of Vale •••

… is out in the sticks, in the middle of nowhere. On the other hand, the freeway that brings all sights of Transylvania closer to you is only 5 km away. A tarmac road touches on the village, but in large parts, it’s cobblestone roads and dirt trails leading up into the wooded hills. Thus, traditional structures and straightforward hospitality still hold up in Vale. Horses, cows and goats are still part of the village landscape, and the farmers take up their scythes and plant corn, potatoes, and vegetables to provide for the winter.
There is a children's playground and a small grocery store at the village square. The town of Saliste 2 km away offers more shops, a farmer's market and an ATM cash machine. Whatever you miss here can be found in Sibiu 20 km away at the Cibin Market, in retail stores, or supermarkets such as Real, Carrefour and Lidl.
Some say that the Romanian countryside appears frozen in time. It is unique and mostly untouched and the breath of the past hides in every corner. Maybe you'll sense the charm of the extraordinary, perceiving what life was like before it was leveled by the advance of civilization.
Until then, take a good look around. Heists and highway robberies are tales from the long-gone years of turmoil following the political change in Romania, and Count Dracula obviously exists only in movies. Most people in these parts are open-minded and very friendly when met with respect.
Read more below for an overview of the sights in the area, plus a pinch of Transylvanian history.

Great stay in a remote location
Our week at Casa Nicu was just what we had hoped for. This is a slightly rustic unit but is clean and has everything you need. Some of their other units are more modern but don’t have some of the character this one does. Werner was excellent at communicating all along and was waiting at our arrival. If we needed anything someone was there in minutes but they never intruded. My one suggestion was a couple of comfortable chairs to sit in for the evening and a few minutes later we had a couple of loungers that made it much more comfortable. If you’re looking for a 5 star hotel experience keep looking but if you like quiet rustic check this out.

Great rural retreat
The property is in the small village of Vale in the Transylvanian foothills. It is a perfect place to escape and Experience country living while still having the comfort of a very clean, fully equipped and quiet spot. Werner and Nicu were excellent hosts. I loved my two week stay here.

Erholung pur!!!

wunderschöner erholsamer Urlaub in Vale

Vollends zufrieden

Excellent service and immaculate cottage
We loved the cottage from the moment we walked in. It is decorated in rustic, traditional style with almost anything you can imagine available. The local farm products is a big plus to any cultural experience, and to have them so easily accessible from our host was a highlight. We also enjoyed the proximity of other sights from nature to history and culture. Would recommend the cottage in and of itself, not to mention being a convenient base to explore this part of Transylvania.

stilvolle landestypische Ferienwohnung

Nahe an zwei spektakulären Paßstraßen. Waldwanderungen vom Dorf möglich, allerdings bekommt man hierzulande nur schwer genaue Wanderkarten: Also improvisieren.

Versprochen! Andi und Oddi
