Hidden Gem
What an amazing stay! Never have I ever stayed at such a wonderfully hosted location and this was probably our 20th VRBO since Covid. Really the trip began before we even got there Karen reached out to make sure we had everything we needed for our 1 year old, and she purchased a high chair in advance of us arriving. She met us at the gate and showed us all the details we would need for our time at the ranch. We drove up to the cutest cottage with a fun and whimsical yard, and a fantastic porch. Once we got inside there were fresh cookies and a sign welcoming us 😊 The cottage has everything you could possibly need or think up needing. All 7 of us slept very comfortably on high quality mattresses. There were games for all ages, indoor games, cornhole, ladder all and more. The cottage is very spacious and has the most well stocked kitchen I have ever seen. We roasted marshmallows by the fire pit, and Mr John even had firewood and starter ready for us. The stars were beautiful and after feeding the deer we watched the sky. It’s so peaceful and bright, you can see the Milky Way. We booked 3 nights thinking this would be a place to sleep after spending the days at Colorado bend - but really I wish I had booked a few more nights just to stay at the ranch. The private river access - the cliffs and trees were so lovely reflecting off the water and we even got to paddle boat in the river. It was hard to leave! It felt more like staying with family than a rental.

Fun with friends!
My old friends and I really enjoyed our get together at Redbird Landing. We took morning and evening walks on the property to enjoy the wildlife, shared good chats and laughter on the covered patio for coffee-time and evening rainfall, cooked several delicious meals in the well appointed kitchen, and were able to take quick trips for shopping in San Saba, hiking in Colorado Bend State Park, and sipping and dining at Fiesta Winery. Our hosts were wonderful, so thoughtful, and the caravan was perfect for our happy visit- highly recommend, and hope to return.

Great family retreat!
Karen and John were extremely hospitable. Fresh cookies we’re waiting for us when we got to the house. John made sure we had plenty of feed for the deer. They set out age appropriate games/activities for our kids. The river was fun. We kayaked and fished each day. We will definitely come back.

Perfect country getaway
Our family had a perfect stay at the ranch. Karen and John are amazing hosts. Their communication is great and they are very accommodating. Karen went above and beyond to make sure we had the best time and experience. The caravan is immaculately clean and very well stocked and organized. It's a perfect spot to relax, disconnect, and enjoy the surrounding nature and wildlife. The wildflowers were incredible this early June! We will definitely come back when we can.

Abundant star gazing
My husband and I had the most amazing time during our stay at this beautiful property. It was peaceful, quiet and the animals were so much fun to watch graze. We walked down to the river and saw all sorts of animals, including a huge jack rabbit who seemed to really love munching on the cacti and grass. The fields were full of gorgeous wildflowers. We ventured to Colorado Bend State Park and hiked to see Gorman Falls, it was absolutely beautiful! It was a very rocky hike, but very rewarding. The night sky is stunning! You could see every star in the sky. We highly recommend staying here as Karen and her husband are so friendly! We will definitely come back.

Like staying with family, maybe better ;)
John and Karen were the very best hosts that I have ever encountered. The attention to details, the thoughtful comfort items and welcoming personalities are exactly what stood out verses just a place to stay. We loved learning the history of the land, Karen brought down homemade goodies that we eagerly devoured! John brought over extra charcoal and made sure we had everything we needed. The property was top notch, but John and Karen were the real jewel of our stay. Can’t wait to go back! I hope the young folks in my family will be just like the Sloan family when they grow up. Thank you for being you KAren and John!!!

Amazing Place!
John and Karen are the nicest, most considerate hosts we have ever encountered when renting a home. They truly went above and beyond to make our stay a memorable experience, especially for our three-year-old. They provided snacks, including homemade cookies, and the house was very well-stocked with anything you could need. They also provided food so that we could feed the various types of deer on the property. Shortly after we had arrived, we learned that John had brought by a turtle which my son then named Pickle (a real highlight for my son!), and the next day John took us around on his “tractor” which was also a lot of fun. If the amazing hosts weren’t enough, the property is incredible and teeming with wildlife. At this time of year there were also beautiful wildflowers everywhere. We walked around several times, including to the river (next time we will bring our canoe!), but it was also nice to just relax in the backyard. This really is a special place! I am probably forgetting a lot of stuff, but I will say if you are considering booking this place (or Andi’s Cabin next door), then do it! You won’t regret it!

Bring your camera!
Karen and John were fabulous hosts! They went above and beyond in every way. There were so many little "extras", we truly felt pampered. The animals on the property were amazing. We fed deer from the back yard, observed several species of deer while on hikes, heard wild turkey, and saw many beautiful birds. The photos on the description are accurate. Every morning we got up early, took our coffee on the porch and photographed wildlife. The property was very well maintained, the home was very clean and I highly recommend!

Our family booked this place to unplug for a few nights. Karen and John were more than accommodating! All the birds and exotic wildlife to view, it did not disappoint!! 10 OUT OF 10!
What can I say except that this property is amazing and the only thing better than the property it self is the host (John & Karen). If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing place where God's beauty of creation is on display this is it. This property offers a ton of fun as well, from watching exotics, to birds, jackrabbits, fishing the river, and late night stargazing and just letting the kids explore and have a blast, we did it all. House is stocked up with everything you need, and the host are amazing and if you need it they will help you get it to make your stay more enjoyable. Colorado Bend SP is close by and worth a day trip and Lampasas is a cool spot to check out as well. If you want to just hang at the ranch that is worth it as well. We would come back just to see John and Karen again, but the property is definitely worth a return trip. 10 out of 10!

Peaceful getaway
This was an opportunity to take some time away but to shut off the noise that is constantly surrounding us. The location was cozy, clean, and well kept and the property is beautiful. The owners were the best you could ask for. Not only were they kind and friendly, but they identified that we were there for my dad's birthday and set the space for us to celebrate. I wholeheartedly recommend if you need a place to go clear your mind and want a view of the beauty of nature as well.

About the host

Dear Guests,
Welcome to our Texas Hill Country oasis. My husband, John, and I came here a decade ago, seeking solace and renewal after a profound loss. We found the healing and rejuvenation we yearned for, and our return to a rustic lifestyle has been the best move we've made in half a century of marriage.

I retired two years after we purchased the ranch. Living here fulltime led to the decision to share our slice of paradise with travelers wanting to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of city life – or as many of our guests eloquently describe it, to 'unplug, relax, and rewind.'

Together, John and I find immense joy in opening our hearts and home to guests like you, sharing the wonders of our 140-acre exotic game ranch.

Hosting allows me to continue a lifelong pursuit: meeting new people and crafting unforgettable experiences. Nestled amidst sprawling pastures and surrounded by native wildlife, our remodeled Fleetwood Festival, once a humble bunkroom, offers a unique retreat from the everyday.

As an ardent birdwatcher, I've transformed our ranch into a sanctuary for avian visitors, both migratory and permanent residents. Don't forget your binoculars and camera – you never know what feathered friends you might encounter!

Of course, no getaway is complete without indulging in delicious homemade treats. Baking has been a lifelong passion of mine, and nothing brings me more joy than sharing a warm plate of cookies or freshly baked cinnamon rolls as a token of our hospitality.

During your stay, allow us to serve as your personal concierge, offering insider tips on local attractions, scenic hiking trails, and hidden culinary gems. Our mission is not only to ensure your comfort but also to enrich your experience and make sure you leave "ranch happy."

Thank you for choosing Red Bluff Guest Ranch for your escape to the Texas Hill Country. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to host you and help create cherished memories that will last a lifetime.

Why they chose this property

Vrbo asks why I chose this neighborhood. I don't know where to begin:
SOLITUDE -- the gate to my ranch is a mile from the nearest highway
THE RIVER -- the banks of the Colorado River are a half-mile walk on private property. The meadow along the river is also private.
THE BIRDS -- The birds were a wonderful surprise. I had no idea that bordering Edwards Plateau would bring hundreds of species of birds to the ranch each year.
WILDLIFE -- something is always being born: a baby oryx; an axis or blackbuck fawn; every spring, half a dozen fallow young. Looking out my kitchen window to see a blackbuck herd 15 yards away. Spotting majestic axis, elusive white tail, or curious fallows on my ranch walks.
NATURE'S SOOTHING VOICE -- No matter what time of day or night I'm outside, the sounds I hear are almost exclusively nature "talking"--birds chirping, a coyote howling, thunder rumbling, rain pinging off our metal roof.
CONVENIENCE -- Two small towns are 10 miles from my front door. No rush-hour traffic, almost

no stop-and-go driving.

What makes this property unique

Our property offers an impressive package of special features and experiences in a setting where everything is within a few minutes' drive or a leisurely walk. Some of my favorites:

Seclusion. Our ranch entrance is a mile from the nearest highway--no concrete, no road traffic, no other manmade structures in sight.

Natural Beauty: Your lodging is surrounded by pristine wilderness and natural habitat for our wildlife, offering a peaceful escape from the city hustle.

Private Colorado River Frontage: Exclusive access to the Colorado River, perfect for fishing, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water's edge.

Birdwatcher's Haven: Our wildlife preserve runs along the eastern edge of Edwards Plateau, a major migratory corridor. Stunning and seldom seen birds make their home on the ranch either year-round or seasonally. We provide hand-mixed feed, water, and natural shelter to attract and care for them. The river attracts more reclusive birds as well as hawks, herons, egrets, eagles, and owls.

Exotic Animals: Experience the thrill of observing dozens of exotic game animals roaming freely on our ranch, many less than 20 yards from your fenced back yard.

Local Expertise: As your host, I'm an eager resource for places to see, restaurants to try, and things to do to make your stay unforgettableaw
