MTB stay
Stayed close to the MI Dragon Trail. Guest cottage offered quiet and comfortable location to read and recover. Bed was very comfortable. Window A/C in bedroom had a hard time cooling the whole unit. Bathroom was a bit cramped, with a tiny toilet, even smaller shower with the shower head at 5’5” and a past ripe shower curtain. Below the kitchen sink spoke to the difficult time dealing with field mice.

Enjoyed our stay!
Guest house was clean and nicely decorated. Comfortable. The chickens running around were a little surprise to us, but they got rounded up and were no bother. In fact, they were pretty entertaining. The owner made sure that all of our concerns were addressed. It was very peaceful with a view of the Muskegon river. We enjoyed our relaxing three days here.

The area around the property was wonderful. We loved walking down to the pond at night to see the water at night and the stars in the sky. The facility inside was clean, quaint and cozy. The queen bed mattress could be replaced, as it was a bit saggy in the middle. There are no bunk beds, as shown in the photo. Just one of them remains as a solo twin bed. That was okay for us, since we have just one child. We enjoyed our stay and will come again.

Wonderful place
We enjoyed our stay. The fish were biting really good. Great place to enjoy the outdoors. If they got rid of the carpet, this would be a perfect place.

Enjoyable Stay
Property was as advertised. Clean, peaceful and relaxing. We did stay in the guest house on top of the hill, so you have 20 steps down to the water. A little hard on my husband's bad leg but he survived. Wifi and cable worked well too. We will definitely be back next year.

Quiet - Convenient Location
Quiet little guest house off the main house. Breezeway area in between so we were never bothered with noise. A bit dark inside and areas that could have used a bit more cleaning. Shower was great other than tiny so if you have any size to you, it could be a problem. Convenient location to fishing ramps on either Croton or Hardy and not far from Newaygo. Overall, for what we needed it worked well.

Very good experience!
The area was beautiful and the owners are super cool people. We ended up hanging out with them the whole time. We were disappointed we had to leave them. Great place for relaxing, fishing, hiking, swimming and boating, and getting a small town experience with friendly residents. We will be visiting again.

Why they chose this property

Castaways Cottages are located between the Croton and Hardy Dams on the Muskegon River. A dock extends into the water and a boardwalk runs the length of the property along the water’s edge with room to moor your boat if you choose to bring one along. While you visit, please feel free to take out the paddleboat and kayaks. You may catch sight of a bald eagle soaring above or a family of ducks or swans gliding along the pond. You’ll feel the cares of life just melt away in the beauty of nature.

The cabin consists of the main living area with a seating area, tv, kitchen and eating area (see photos). It has one bath and one bedroom. The bedroom has a queen bed and a twin bed. One roll-away bed provided upon request. We provide clean linens, dinner ware, and basic utensils, pots and pans for cooking. Outside the cabin is a small yard with a picnic table, a couple Adirondack chairs, and a fire pit. 19 steps down take you to the community space.

The community space is available to all guests. It has a platform that overlooks the water, a wooden swing for relaxing, and campfire pit with bench seating. Ten steps take you down to the water's edge/dock/boardwalk.

Downtown Croton is 2 miles away and has a couple restaurants, gas station, and grocery store. We are about 10 miles away from beautiful Newaygo with more shops, restaurants, and parks. We are minutes away from Newaygo County Pathways and the Dragon Trail - popular with both hikers and bikers. Do you want a day at a beach instead? The Hardy Operator’s Village Park is a couple miles away, just east of the Hardy Dam, and offers hours of fun with its sandy beach, playground and picnic areas.

Please be 21 years or older to book with us and be respectful of the cottage, grounds, and other guests. Keep your noise level down after 11pm.

Most importantly, just come to Castaways Cottage to unwind, relax and enjoy the river life!
