Stunning view, quiet retreat, perfect for family!
Our week-long stay at Pu'u Mahana Plantation was wonderful! We brought three generations of family -- kids/teens through grandparents. First and foremost, the views are stunning!! It doesn't matter where you are standing at the house, you are surrounded by such natural beauty! We appreciated having several bedroom options and places to gather inside/out. The kitchen is fully stocked and had everything we could have wanted for preparing and enjoying meals. Jeni provides so many items to make the stay comfortable such as beach towels, coolers, boogie boards, board games. The pool and patio area was gorgeous day and night --- full ocean views during the day and beautifully lit up with torches and lights at night. Walking the property was a peaceful activity each day -- it feels like a true getaway. There is truly a "symphony" of sounds surrounding you - birds, frogs and more. We liked the area of Captain Cook - access to good snorkeling, fun local places to eat, and friendly people at the farmer's market. Jeni was a great host and responded quickly to any questions we had.

Location and pool are the highlights
The ever-so slightly out of town location made for a relaxing, peaceful day to day living. You feel alone with your group on the property - allowing for a serene experience. House is large, lots of space, never felt cramped. It's a bit older house, which means slightly dated aspects - but not in a way that made the stay uncomfortable. The property managers were available when we had an issues and they were resolved without any overhead from us. Thanks for a lovely big-island stay!

Lovely home
We had a wonderful visit to the Big Island and Jeni’s home was a delight. Everything was well maintained and the house and grounds are beautiful. The little town of Captain Cook was a quick trip for supplies, and the proximity to terrific snorkeling was a daily joy. We loved picking avocados, starfruit and lemons and cooking in the well stocked kitchen. The sunsets are amazing from the house! Jeni was a responsive and gracious host. Our family of nine appreciated the opportunity to share her wonderful home.

A beautiful home, with much neglect.
We stayed at this beautiful home 5 years ago, and had a great experience. Since that time, it appears that the owners have given up on guest satisfaction and home maintenance. The yard appears un-mowed for a month, and there is an absolute mountain of garbage and recyclables behind the garage, stinking and drawing flies, feral cats, and who knows what else. The biggest problem was the refrigerator, which apparently has not been working properly for a while, since all the home instructions warn guests to close the fridge tightly. We were diligent about that, yet it still only got to 50 degrees F at most times. Our daughter had stomach issues for the last two days there and two days at our next house, very likely from eating food that was spoiled. One of the requirements was that guests had to wash and dry bath towels before leaving, a very difficult task when you are showering and packing to get out by 10:00 AM. The cookware and glassware (plastic) is very poor, not what you would expect at these prices. I hope the owners take more interest in this home, it's a great place with so much to offer. Sad to see it in this state of neglect.

Beautiful property with excellent ammenities!
had a very enjoyable 2 week stay with extended family, including 3 toddlers. Jeni was always available to assist with issues, questions - not that many arose. The property is located welcomingly in the hills to provide just enough buffer to be away from the hustle-bustle, but close enough to a grocery store and other essentials to make the stay very enjoyable. The house was also stocked with every imaginable amenity, including a pack-n-play for our youngest, Would definitely stay again. Mahalo!!!

Perfect for multiple family get away.
The house was great and loved the open sliding doors. Anything you may need is there. It is secluded and nightly climate is cool and soothing. The house is spread out and beautiful to sit by the pool to visit with family or watch children swim. Would recommend all the way. Very close grocery stores.

exactly what was needed...
This is simply an amazing property tucked into a great corner of the Big Island. It gives the right amount of privacy while maintaining easy access to the area (which has some of the friendliest people).

Beautiful Home
This home provided all the amenities we had been told to expect There were coolers and beach equipment, a great pool. tiki lights, and plenty of room. The kitchen was fully equipped and plenty of parking space. The grounds are very nice with avocadoes, papaya and palms. The location is within fifteen minutes of three beaches and easy to get to Highway 11 which circles the island. The driveway to the house is narrow but paved and the directions to access the property are excellent. The home easily accommodates a large family, couples and singles. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the owner is very easy to work with.

Wonderful place to stay
My wife and I stayed here with our 3 sons and their families. We had just as much fun and relaxation here at the house as we did anywhere on the island. We spent 2 days at the house without leaving, just swimming, picking lemons to make fresh squeezed lemonade, picking avacados and just laying in the sun. The pool and hot tub were great. There were no mosquitoes or any other unwelcomed bugs to bother us. I will admit that the roosters crowing at 4:00AM woke us up earlier then we wanted to get up, but our 3 year old grand daughter sure loved watching the chickens and the baby chicks. The grounds were well kept up and the house was very clean with lots of room for 10 people. If we ever come back to the big island with a group of friends or family we would definitely stay here again without any hesitation.

A great property for our group and our escape from winter
Our group of 11 stayed at Pu’u Mahana during the Feb break 2018. Jeni was great to deal with from when we booked in and right through our stay. She had lots of tips and information for us in her welcome package, and was very easy to get in touch with if we had any questions while were there. The weather on the Big Island was mostly rainy during our stay and we did a lot of touring around the island. The hot tub and pool were great at the end of the day. There were a few technical issues with the wifi and couple of other minor maintenance issues. Jeni had them dealt with as soon as she could. The cat that came to visit quickly made friends. Our girls named her Mary Margaret for the week. The lemon tree was full of ripe lemons and the avocados also were in season. Nice that we could make use of them while we were there. Lots of room, the bedrooms are suites on their own. All of us could gather in the kitchen for coffee/breakfast in the morning and not be crowded. The rental vehicle had GPS and it took us to the address, it was good that we got there in the daylight because the property is back up the mountain and down a quiet country trail. It would have been tricky to find in the dark but again, all the directions were in the welcome package. I would recommend Pu’u Mahana to other families that are looking to stay near the Kona side of the Big Island. Janet H Alberta Canada

Christmas vacation
Wow! That really is the first way to start. Jeni was great to work with. Her home is completely set up for you to have the.best time. The pool was amazing. The house was built for you to experience the best sun sets I have ever seen. Every bedroom was decorated to perfection. The pictures that Jeni provided us, were great. However the pictures didn’t come close to showing how incredible her home was. Everyone in my family woke up every day to say wow. If I could give ten stars I would. I can’t thank Jeni enough for letting us share her home. Anybody looking to rent a house on the big Island, should try very hard to rent this home. We were able too create the BEST CHRISTMAS VACATION MEMORIES WE WILL EVER HAVE. I recommend this home very highly. Thank you so very much. Daniel Ellis and Family

Amazing!
Everything about the place was better than the pictures suggest. Jeni was a pleasure to work with. We had a large family group in support of my sister competing in the Ironman. We had plenty of space. The kitchen, living space and pool/outdoor area is much bigger than expected. The master suites were awesome. The kids loved the pool and we had plenty of fresh avocados every day for everyone to make sandwiches and guac. There's a grocery store within 5-10 minutes and an amazing wrap/smoothie place Loko Wraps. The coffee shack is another recommended nearby stop. We would definitely stay here again if there weren't so many other amazing undiscovered locations in this world. Our only recommendation would be updated pillows and linens for at least the upstairs suite. Other than that A+

I can't begin to put in words this beautiful retreat. If you want a secluded piece of paradise and just want to relax without the tourist hassle, this it the place. Still close to tourist activity but only if you wish to partake in that type of activity. Great for family retreat with room for all.

Impressive property.
The property was beautiful and the house was beautiful and well equipped. The location was good for exploring all over the island and was convenient for beaches, especially Magic Sand beach which I would highly Recommend. House had an amazing pool and all the amenities you would need. The only small draw back would be the spotty water pressure - sometime the water pressure would drop, especially if a few people were showering at the seams time. I would recommend this property.

Absolutely Wonderful
Jeni, your home was wonderful. We all enjoyed our stay, enjoying the pool, hot tub, 5 acres of avocados and fruit trees, chickens and roosters, views and comfortable surroundings. Our time here far exceeded our expectations. Your home accommodated a large family and we would recommend to anyone. Your home showed the same aloha spirit we found on the island. Loved the big island too.

great location
Celebrated our 50th anniversary with our family members and found that with renting the optional room, the house accommodated 8 adults and three children very well. The weather at this elevation was perfect - without the beach side humidity! The house is close to many beaches and excellent snorkeling and also an easy day trip to Volcano National Park. The swimming pool and hot tub were perfect and this old man was quite content to relax around pool while the younger among us took off for various exciting forays. Luaus at the various resorts are close enough to enjoy as well. Our only real complaint was that the garbage cans were nearly all full when we arrived and we had to take recyclables to a recycling center near the airport in order to have disposal space. The trash was not emptied the entire time we were there. Also, it is now 5 weeks since we were there and no word on a security deposit refund as of this date. This delay can be possibly be attributed to the holidays and we all are extremely busy at this time. OUR FAMILY MEMBERS ALL WANT TO RETURN IN 2017 AND WE ARE NOW LOOKING AT THE CHRISTMAS-NEW YEAR TIME FRAME.

Best vacation spot!
Where do I start? Getting to the property was an adventure to be remembered. A one lane (paved) road up the mountain took us through awesome tropical greenery. Just when you thought you’d passed the property and would end up lost in the jungle, the gate to the property appears! Driving up the tree-lined drive just made us more excited about our stay. The property is gorgeous, and the house is really cool. The pool is nice and warm with water falls over the edge, black bottom and honu mosaics. We spent most of our time in the pool during the day. When our friends would head into town, my wife and I enjoyed a little nude sunbathing! The patio was great for dinner, drinks, and a sunset dip in the hot tub. The outdoor grill and tiki torches were a nice touch. We had two masters bedrooms and a nearby ohana room which gave us plenty of private time, all three having great views. Waking up to a chorus of birds every morning reminded you where you were. The beds were super high quality and, according to my wife, the house was beautifully decorated. We enjoyed the huge kitchen and made sure we got lots of fresh seafood from Costco and produce from the farmers markets (one was on Saturdays right by the house). We had a few issues with the dishwasher but the owner was quick to respond. Everything else was perfect! Jeni made the process easy and was super helpful to share information about the area and offer recommendations. This house was easily big enough for 10 people but I’ll tell you we enjoyed being three couples just lodging about. We ventured out to a few beaches (lots of beach supplies were provided), had dinner at a cool restaurant called Holuakoa Café, lunched in town at Humpy’s and Huggo’s, and grabbed beers at the Harbor House in Honokohau Marina. Kona Brewery is another great place but get there early or you will wait forever. All in all, probably one of our best vacations! When we come back to the islands, this is where we will come. If we could give it 10 stars we would.

Wow! Wow! Wow!
I recently ventured to Pu'u Mahana with my family, the property was amazing and the owner was a delight to work with and made our experience that much better! I stayed in one of the beautiful master rooms with an en suite right off the pool, what a way to wake up and start my day. The infinity pool, is beautiful and large and obviously well maintained. Turtles are etched into the bottom and I've always wanted to swim with turtles in Hawaii! Birds also joined me on the edge of the pool to bathe while I enjoyed my morning Kona coffee that was in the welcome basket left by the owner. My family and I spent most of our five day vacation on the property relaxing with a few trips into town or to the beach. Finally, there was nothing like finishing off the day watching the sun set over the large view from the patio with a glass of wine, the tiki torches lit and the laughter of my family surrounding me. The amenities and property surpassed my expectations and made for a very peaceful stay!

Wonderful, beautiful home
We had the best time at this home. It was perfect for our group of 9 adults, 2 toddlers. The house was large enough for all of us to be together and yet have our own space. We overindulged on the delicious avocados, cooked family meals in the huge kitchen, and enjoyed nights under the stars in the pool and hot tub. This is one of the nicest vacation homes we had ever stayed in and we were all sad to leave. Being up on the volcano meant we had a wonderful view of sunsets and the stars. It was great to have the privacy of home. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, it is colder up on the volcano than down by the beach but we enjoyed the cooler temperatures (especially compared to the negative temperatures back home). Kona was full of things to do and Captain Cook was a fun town for shopping and eating. We were there over New Year's Eve and the fireworks all over the island were spectacular to watch from poolside. The owner Jeni was always available if we needed her. I really recommend this home for a big group looking to enjoy a trip to the Big Island.

Hillside Paradise
Our family of nine, two generations, had a wonderful experience for our first visit to Hawaii; this home was the icing on the cake! We spent time exploring/snorkeling/shopping during many of the ten days. But the quiet time just walking the five acres of orchards, eating meals outside with the glorious sunsets and swimming in the wonderful pool was probably the best part. We could have just stayed there at the beautiful home and not done the sightseeing things - it was a sweet private resort all its own! We enjoyed the delicious avocados and other fruit we could pick daily. The house is set up so that the two grandkids roomed with their parents in the upper Master and had their privacy for naps, etc. The other rooms were perfect for the older kids; the extra Master BR/Bath was nice for my wife and I. We hope to book Pu'u Mahana annually for our family and will be recommending it to all of our friends as well.

Family Gathering
We spent a fabulous week at this lovely house in February, 2014. It was a perfect location and accommodations for 4 generations. There were ten of us, ages 4 to 84. Many things about the visit are memorable, but especially we found that the house offers a big group lots of spaces to be together, and also places to be alone. Large bedrooms and bathrooms distributed conveniently and each with some privacy. There were places to make puzzles together, play cards, eat shared meals, watch the Winter Olympics on big screens (several), and then outdoors to go swimming (luxurious pool!), and explore the surroundings amongst the avocado trees. The kitchen is spacious and modern so several people can work together on different things and come up with a wonderful spread. An issue arose with the water supply, but vastly more important, we found that all it took was a quick phone call, and the owner leapt into action, and things were fixed. She has a well-established support crew that knows what to do when stuff happens. This vacation house is conveniently located near some of the best ocean beaches on the Big Island, in the Captain Cook/City of Refuge area, and the owner’s detailed descriptions in the written information are very helpful. The house has enough altitude above the ocean that the view of the sky and sea is spectacular, and yet the temperatures/humidity are moderate 24/7. When you visit this place, be sure to take the time to walk down to the main road and back at least once. Round trip it is about an hour’s walk, and if you take time to smell the flowers, and to take pictures of the plants, flowers, fruits, berries and animals along the way, you won’t soon forget it.

Incredible Home! One of the best vacation rentals on the island (if not THE best)
I've seen a decent chunk of the Hawaii, and this house is one of the nicer homes I've seen on any island, particularly Big Island. Upon the drive up to the house, the road narrows and winds. You turn onto the palmtree-lined driveway and ahead of you is this big, beautiful house. The house itself is a fenced complex within the larger avocado orchard (SO nice to be able to walk outside at any time and eat avocados) There were only four of us on the trip, but I plan on going back with my entire family soon. The house is open, beautiful, clean, and the interior design was gorgeous (I am a designer). Before we went on the trip, I was unsure of what to expect. The landlord was very helpful, the house sounded great, but when I read the other reviews I was a bit worried from what some people were saying. After staying at the house, I think I know why there are some bad reviews. It seems other people had issues with the weather, not the house, so don't worry about this place if you want a fantastic Hawaiian experience. Sure, the clouds roll in during the afternoon, but every single morning was BEAUTIFUL. Around noon, clouds rolled in, and we trekked down to town to hang out on the beach. Then around dinner we went back up to the house, the clouds were usually all gone by then, and we were pleased to see a beautiful sunset. Every. Single. Night. No utility problems (but I asked about it prior to renting. The landlord assured us she had people ready to help. We were staying in rural Kona, afterall, so I was just happy to hear there were plans if something broke. Not any different from a mechanic being on-hand at a hotel.) I highly recommend this rental. Thank you again!

We loved our stay. We were a bit skeptical upon first arriving and driving through the neighborhood above Captain Cook and through the trees, but upon first sight of the house we were hooked. My son's grin was a mile wide when he saw the pool and the orchards. We shared the home with another family and all tolled we had 4 boys between 7 and 12. They were in heaven with the pool and we were in heaven with two master suites. The home is tastefully decorated, well appointed, high end appliances and sound systems, and in good repair. The views are dynamic and breathtaking. We had some famous mountain rain storms and it was magnificent to watch the clouds come in and rain drive down, replaced shortly by gorgeous sun shine. We were visiting over Easter, so we had an Easter Egg hunt in the avocado orchard, followed by Easter Brunch by the poolside. Fresh squeezed lemonade from the tree behind the house, and fresh eggs with avocados and tomato. So memorable! We had friends with children come visit who were staying at the Four Seasons and entertained poolside while the kids swam in the infinity pool. Our guests were jealous of the space, privacy and ambiance that even the Four Seasons couldn't equal. We would go back in a heartbeat and only wished we had more than a week. It is a bit of a trek to a sandy beach, but you don't visit the Big Island for sandy beaches. We hiked on the volcano, spent an evening with a bottle of nice wine watching the glow of the lava in the crater. Unforgettable. This property is a gem. The house binder with directions on appliances, stereo and recommendations for local restaurants and sightseeing was very helpful and insightful. We have no complaints and only accolades for this wonderful home.

A native Californian, Big Island Hawaii was a perfect home for my family for many years! We raised our family in this beautiful home nestled in the slopes of Mauna Loa and now have the joy of sharing it with others. Enjoy our paradise!

Why they chose this property

Kona has long been a favorite place of ours and when the opportunity presented itself for us to relocate, this was our first choice. We fell in love with the home, the land and the peace and beauty the property offers.

What makes this property unique

Our friends, guests and ohana tell us they don't want to leave the property once they arrive. Everything you could imagine is right there; a resort-style pool, outdoor living space, acres of fruit trees, an open house with incredible decor and a gourmet kitchen! Simply ono!
