About this property

This quaint quarried from the river stone cottage sits right on Little River. Enjoy beautiful views of the river while relaxing in the hot tub on the screened in deck or roasting marshmallows around the fire pit on the stone patio. Also you can enjoy views of the river from the master bedroom and the living room. There is a boat dock and deep water and we provide 2 sit on top kayaks and paddles. Please bring your own life jackets. The completely fenced yard is perfect for dogs. You will love our modern fully stocked kitchen with stainless-steel full-size refrigerator, gas range/oven, dishwasher and microwave. You can grill steaks on the charcoal grill on the back deck. Our cozy living room with a large stone gas log fireplace will make you want to stay forever. Have a family game night with games, puzzles and cards that are stored in the chest in the living room. A few DVDs are available. Both spacious bedrooms contain queen beds.

Awesome place to stay

My 87 year old mother and my sister wanted to stay in a cabin in Mentone, where we could relax and just enjoy spending time together. My mother was also bringing her 2 year old dog for her first trip. This is a perfect place if you have pets or kids or just want to relax. The river is amazing and full of fish and there are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities. The place was very clean and well stocked. We will be staying again more than likely in the fall to enjoy the season change.

Spring Break at the Shire

We had a great and relaxing stay at the Shire over our Spring Break week. Our son enjoyed taking the kayaks out each afternoon and we are enjoyed the wood fire pit followed by a soak in the hot tub every evening. It was quiet, safe, and easy to find. We found the beds comfortable and we all slept well. Close proximity to Mentone and all the area has to offer. We would definitely love to return and explore more in this area. The cabin is located right near the state line with a respective time zone change, so be aware that your phone will keep changing time as you arrive and depart.

Great getaway cottage

The cottage is very cute and homey. We stayed from 12/27 - 12/31/23. The temps dropped LOW!! we saw some snow showers/flurries. The hot tub was very welcoming considering the cold. The Shire was very quiet and tucked away. We visited the Mentone Market. Great pizza. Wildflower Cafe had a wait but was delicious...the loaded shrimp grits were perfect. The Hattery was also a nice lunch spot. We drove to Ft. Payne to The Santa fe cattle company forva steak dinner. Only about 20 miles. Wonderful food. We visited little river canyon falls and desoto falls during our stay. Both were breathtaking. We are thinking about staying again in the warmer months to lounge at the river. I would recommend this cottage. The fenced yard was nice for our dog.

The Shire Weekend Getaway

My husband and I stayed at The Shire with our two miniature Dachshunds. Upon arrival we were amazed at all the detail the owner had taken to ensure a relaxing time away from home. The home and amenities are gorgeous. A much needed getaway - thank you for a wonderful time.

Amazing gem and wonderful location

Our stay at The Shire was nothing short of amazing! A quiet retreat with all the perfect amenities. It was peaceful and comfortable accommodations. The host was very responsive. We enjoyed the local cuisine, hiking, kayaking, and amazing scenery. We will stay here again! Cannot say enough wonderful things about this splendid cottage.

A great weekend

We really enjoyed our stay! Even though there was a burn ban and a drought, we relaxed in the hot tub, hiked in Desoto Park, visited arts & crafts events, went antique shopping, and ate local. The fenced in yard was a plus for our dogs. A perfect getaway to celebrate our 27 year anniversary.

Perfect relaxing vacation

Most laid back vacation we have ever taken. So cozy and felt like home!! We loved the river and the fenced in yard for our dogs. We will definitely be returning sometime in the future!!

Easter Weekend

What a beautiful place to stay! The cabin is adorable and has plenty of room. It rained the entire time, but we didn’t care because we had a nice warm hot tub to relax in. We were able to cook full meals for four people using the cookware provided. Entire place was super clean. The Internet is slow, but it was OK for us. We were still able to contact our families, make phone calls and get a little work done. It was also nice to be able to use the DIRECTV for music. We will definitely all be back at different times with our families. Can’t Wait!!

Great property in a Great Location!

The Shire is better than described on the listing. I planned for a relaxing break from the stress of work and town and this was Perfect! The property is rustic and very charming! The fully stocked kitchen, outside grill and the Hot Tub makes it worthwhile! The Geese , chipmunks and hummingbirds are just lagniappe! Will visit again!!

Anniversary get away

This property is amazing in all aspects! Quaint and quiet, just what we wanted. All the amenities you would need or want. A great hot tub, fireplace and fire pit. The yard is beautifully wooded and private. We made use of the outdoor grill more than once. The beds were especially comfortable and we slept like a dream. We lost power one day and Holly was more than helpful finding out how long repairs would take and than gave us suggestions on things to do in town. We were close to two great restaurants and also De Soto falls where we wanted to hike. Took a day trip to nearby Chattanooga, this cabin was fairly centrally located to everything on our to do list. I would definitely recommend it!!! Thanks for a wonderful anniversary!!!!

Cozy, quiet, comfortable

Absolutely loved everything about this cottage- view of & access to the water, comfy beds, nice appliances, adorable decor and aesthetic, quiet location in a beautiful residential area… I could go on! The hot tub sits within a screened porch just outside of the back door. It’s very nice & felt amazing! Much thought was put into making this spot as cozy as it is efficient. The yard is perfection. Your doggo will agree! We are already planning to return & stay longer.

Winter Retreat

We had a lovely 2 night getaway at The Shire. This quaint and cozy property was ideal for a relaxing weekend of enjoying steaks on the grill and a dip in the hot tub. Although we brought some items “just in case” The Shire was equipped with all that we could possibly need. The cabin was well organized and clean. It is evident that the property is well maintained both inside and out. Looking forward to our next visit.

Mentone get away

Our stay at The Shire in Mentone was wonderful! The cabin is just as described online. Rustic and very comfortable. Well equipped kitchen for cooking. The hot tub was awesome! And the securely fenced yard was perfect for our canine companion. We were visited by Mallard Ducks in the river every morning, as well as Canadian Geese. We would love to come back in the summer to utilize the kayaks and explore the river! Thanks.

The”Shire” in Mentone Alabama

We wanted a late Fall vacation where the weather was not too hot and not too cold. We chose northern Alabama. We chose the Shire because it was pet friendly, on a River, and completely fenced-in. We loved the old charm of the cottage and it had everything anyone could want. We loved sitting on the back deck (very private) . The hot tub was wonderful and the fireplace waS great for chilly mornings. Would recommend to anyone who is looking for a pet-friendly vacation spot in northern Alabama!

A peaceful vacation

This beautiful, peaceful and simple cabin has everything you could need! We love we were able to bring our dog to explore the totally fenced in backyard. I normally feel nervous traveling with my pets, but I felt extremely comfortable letting my dog explore the yard, floating dock and the river. We will be back the third weekend of October for Mentone’s Color Fest!

Felt Like Home

We enjoyed our stay at the Shrire in Mentone. It felt very homey. Our dog love the lagoon and the fenced yard. The beds were comfortable and everything was clean. Thank you for creating such an inviting and peaceful space.

The house being located near Mentone, and Little River in the back yard for fishing were nice features. We ate at a couple good places in Mentone and had two state parks less than an hour away to go hiking.

A wonderful little cottage in the woods

We had a lovely stay at The Shire in early August. The cottage was adorable and spotless when we arrived. We spent our time relaxing, and we loved that The Shire provided kayaks and easy and direct access to the lake. My husband really liked the hot tub as well. The fact that the property is completely fenced pleased our two small dogs as well, and we were able to sit on the porch and watch them as they safely explored the grounds. We hope to return for another relaxing visit!
