About this property

Slate Hill School House in Fort Valley, Virginia

The historic Slate Hill Schoolhouse in Fort Valley started serving local farming families prior to the Civil War. However, the School House had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1871. Many local children attended between 1871 and the closing of the school in 1939. Attendance records from 1904-07 indicate that the children ranged in age from 7 to 18 years old, with a median age of 11.

A thorough renovation was completed in 2013, and the Slate Hill School House is now furnished and equipped to serve as the perfect place for a quiet and restorative getaway. Set in pastoral farmland, you can enjoy views of the ridges of Massanutten Mountain from the porch or the fire pit. From the other side of the house, you may on occasion see horses roaming inside the fences of Glenmont Farm across the way. There are several outdoor recreation options nearby, including many hiking trails in the George Washington National Forest and fishing at Passage Creek.

In the School House living room you'll find a travel display on the wall that includes a folded map of the dozens of hiking trails in the surrounding area. Just five miles south of the School House on Fort Valley Road, you’ll find the Fort Valley Post Office and the Fort Valley Country Store which sells gasoline, extra firewood, and other conveniences, including made-to-order deli sandwiches.

The School House is less than 30 minutes to Front Royal if you travel East on Route 55. And it's less than 30 minutes to Strasburg traveling West on Route 55. The historic districts of each town have restaurants, breweries, and points of interest that you might like to keep in mind for rainy days in particular. Strasburg has one of the biggest antique emporiums in the area.

If you're up for traveling 40 minutes or more, the family might enjoy Shenandoah Caverns. Across from the building entrance to the caverns, you'll find the one-of-a-kind "America on Parade" Museum. It's opened seasonally, and it houses an amazing collection of huge floats from major parades such as presidential inaugurals and the Pasadena Rose Parade. Within 30-45 minutes there are several sites for Civil War buffs, including the Cedar Creek Battlefield, Hupp's Hill, and Belle Grove. Also about 40 minutes away are the historic towns of Edinburg and Woodstock. The Edinburg Mill houses numerous collections on several levels that inform on life in the Shenandoah Valley during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

A couple of notes for potential guests:
Sprint and AT&T have cell signals in Fort Valley, but if your cell provider is Verizon, you will not get a good signal, or any signal at all. You'll want to connect your phone to the WiFi at the house.
You'll notice from the reservation schedule that Monday and Tuesday nights are always blocked off. This is to accommodate the cleaning schedule. However, if you wish to extend a weekend stay to include a Monday night, that can usually be easily arranged. Simply inquire.
Enjoy a Shenandoah Schoolhouse Stay!

Wonderful Weekend Getaway
My family was looking for a place to stay close to the Shenandoah National Park for a weekend trip. We found this property and we were so glad we chose to stay there! The house was so cute and the property was beautiful. We spent our evenings around the campfire! We were able to enjoy some hiking and explored the Luray Caverns (which is a must!) We highly recommend his property and host, both were exceptional.

Lovely, quiet getaway
Charming house and property. The views are remarkable! The horses on the farm nearby were a bonus - we loved watching them. We were surprised that there was no TV, but it wasn't listed in the amenities or in the pics, so that's on us.

The Schoolhouse
This property was beyond our expectations. It is beautiful and well stocked and the hosts are amazing. We woke to birds singing and the beautiful mist on the mountains. Just a magical place that I would hope to be able to come and stay at again.

Awesome
Thank you for sharing your home Slate School House with us. From the moment we entered the home we felt very comfortable. As a retired teacher each room we entered kept me smiling from the antique school desk and benches to the Dick and Jane framed book pages ! The school bell on top of the roof was my favorite ! The views from the porch and fire pit area were fantastic ! As well as the view from kitchen window of the horses grazing in the pasture . Slate School House was perfect with views of the mountain and the beauty of the sunsets. Thank you for also being being pet friendly .

peaceful getaway in Fort Valley
We spent a wonderful family Thanksgiving at Slate Hill School House. The house was clean, well-equipped, and more spacious than we expected. Fort Valley is isolated, but there's great hiking nearby and plenty of peace and quiet. The host was very accommodating; we really have no complaints. This was one of the best rental properties I've visited.

Fort Valley School House Stay
We had a fabulous weekend at the School House. We enjoyed the games, the firepit, cooking and the total ambiance. The setting was serene, quiet and we could see the stars-unlike our house. The sleeping and bathroom arrangement was very nice for our group. We visited local orchards, wineries, cideries and today the fire tower. We loved the hidden aspect of Fort Valley. Thanks to the house’s wifi we felt connected to the rest of the world. What a lovely place.

Very Relaxing
The School House is in a beautiful location and the property is very well maintained. The master bedroom bed is comfortable and all appliances work very well. The owners are down to earth folks who care about their property and your stay and the house doesn’t have the typical flop house feel. I met the owners when they brought additional wood for well supplied fire pit. The house isn’t fancy but it is very charming. There is no TV but the internet is good enough to easily stream movies on your laptop. The only complaint is the well water is a bit metallic but I would return to the school house without hesitation

Charming, Well appointed property
Everything about this rental was great, from check in to check out. Very easy and concise instructions. Beautiful house, inside and out. Great kitchen, nice bathrooms, comfortable beds. Surrounded by mountains in the daytime, millions of stars at night. A nice fire pit area with Adirondack chairs. Would rent again if we go back to the Shenandoah’s.

Second stay - as great as the first!
This was our second stay at the Schoolhouse. We loved it, again! It is such an adorable house, with all of the necessary amenities and decorated so nicely. We especially love the fire pit, where we sat every evening, and made s'mores on our last night. We sat on the porch with coffee in the mornings. Our dog came along and she loved everything about it, too. The location is great - we went hiking at Elizabeth Furnace, went into Winchester one afternoon for shopping/dinner, and into Strasburg to the antique emporium. We highly recommend this property!

Another great stay at the schoolhouse!
After an amazing stay at the schoolhouse in the fall for Halloween weekend, my family and I came for the 4th of July holiday. We were able to use the house as our base to explore all over the Shenandoah Valley area, and knew we would have a comfortable, clean, cozy place to come back to every night. Brian is phenomenal and has everything you need at the house, responds quickly to any questions, and ensures you have the best stay possible. He is the best host of any property I have ever stayed in!

Father Daughter Trip
This was a first father daughter trip for us. Dad is 78 so it has been a long time coming. The house was close for a day at Shenandoah, which is beautiful! The property is beautiful. Nestled in the middle of nowhere - we were unplugged and able to relax. Spending time talking around the fire, playing games, and reading made for a much needed getaway with family. My dad fell more in love with the little schoolhouse every day we were there.

Wonderful place
Everything about our stay was lovely. The listing photos can’t fully capture the character of this old schoolhouse and the beauty of the property. The home was spotless and very cozy. We could have sat on the porch for days. The host, Brian very friendly and hospitable. We definitely hope to return.

A perfect place for a weekend getaway!
We really enjoyed our stay - the property is absolutely beautiful and the house is charming, clean and comfortable! We were a family of seven - and the space/amenities were perfect. From hanging out on the front porch, cooking in the kitchen, and gathering around the fire pit - it was a perfect way to the weekend.

Wonderful place to stay
The school house was such a relaxing place to stay. They thought of everything. Modern, yet still had the charm of a real school house. Extra touches like coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Very comfortable beds and pillows, fire available for the fire pit. It is on farm land with beautiful trees and is close to hiking as well as going into town. I would definitely come back

Wonderful Getaway!
We had a wonderful Easter weekend getaway. We visited Shenandoah National Park for a couple of hikes and found a really great restaurant in Fort Royal, Vibrissas Brewery. We enjoyed s’more’s by the fire pit at night and our 11 month old golden retriever was in absolute heaven! Her favorite spot was laying on the front porch, looking out at the views of the mountain, soaking up the sun and breathing in the fresh mountain crisp air. All the special touches from the host were much appreciated to include the doggie towels by the inside side door. The house is adorable, the view is amazing, and we were grateful for the memories our family made this weekend!
