The Neighborhood:
Aspen Grove Cabin Location and Neighborhood

Aspen Grove Cabin is located within the Wilson Ranch community, part of the Freestone Inn development. Freestone was established by Jack and Elsie Wilson in the late 1940s after Jack left his job on the Golden Gate Bridge. The Wilsons founded a twelve-acre ranch in Mazama, where Jack began offering guests hunting, fishing, camping, and packhorse trips throughout the North Cascades.

Mazama Wilson Ranch is just 2 miles (a 10-minute bike ride) from the Mazama Store and the Methow Trails trailhead, which provides access to hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe trails. In addition to the store, known for its renowned bakery and groceries, Mazama is home to the Goat’s Beard outdoor store (which rents mountain and fat bikes), the Mazama Ski School for cross-country ski lessons and rentals, and the popular Mazama Public House, offering local brews, food, and live music. Please note, the Sandy Butte Bistro at the Freestone Inn is not currently operating, and Jack's Hut may be open on a very limited basis.

North Cascades National Park Aspen Grove Cabin offers easy access to the North Cascades National Park, with a number of world-class hiking trails nearby. The Cutthroat Lake trailhead is less than a 20-minute drive, Washington Pass is 25 minutes away, and the Maple Pass trailhead is 30 minutes from the cabin. This prime location allows you to beat the crowds and secure trailhead parking during peak seasons.

Winthrop Just 14 miles down the road from Aspen Grove, the historic town of Winthrop offers a range of shops, art galleries, and dining establishments. You can also visit the Shafer Museum to explore local history. Winthrop boasts one of North America's only NHL-sized outdoor rinks, offering ice activities in the winter and active sports and pickleball courts in the summer. The town hosts several events throughout the year, including the Rhythm and Blues Festival, Vintage Car Rally, Memorial and Labor Day Rodeos, and Christmas at the End of the Road. Check the town’s website for event details.

Mazama Charmer

Excellent home for a large group. We appreciated that the home was well stocked with incidentals and firewood. Conveniently located near the Mazama Store and North Cascades Park.

We loved our stay

The house is gorgeous. There are four bunks/twin beds, two kings, and a queen. The two king rooms have their own bathrooms, and the bunk room and queen share a hall bath. There weren’t many towels. Tons of blankets and pillows, but we had to search for enough towels for our group of nine hockey players. The laundry room is set up for a group of athletes or outdoor enthusiasts. There’s a washer and dryer (the dryer didn’t dry well, even though the lint trap was clean), drying racks, fans, hooks, a bench, and a shower stall. The kitchen was big enough for everyone. There was a nice fireplace in the great room and wood enough for fires. There are a lot of games and we discovered new games to play together. There’s no TV, and no blinds on the windows. Generally that’s not a problem, but there’s a half bath with a window to the front that has no blinds. So if you have friends coming and going from the driveway, it’s best to go to one of the other restrooms. We also had someone who woke with the light, so he didn’t like the lack of blinds. The listing says there’s a hot tub “steps away”. It’s quite a few steps, at just over a half mile, at the inn’s main building. We ended up not using it. There was enough dish ware for all of us, and the house was really well set up for a group of nine. We never felt crushed together, and had a great time. We’d definitely use this for our a Hockey House in the future.
