Beautiful and spacious, lots to do

This is a beautiful place! We stayed at here 5 nights with a group of extended family ranging in age from 1 to 79 and everyone had a great time. The accommodations were top notch. Every bedroom was comfortable and large with wonderful private baths (nice soaking tubs!). The wrap around porch was perfect for the kids to run around on endlessly, which they loved. The kitchen was really well stocked (much better than most vacation rentals we've stayed in before). We made use of the fire pit and the kayaks. We did the hike to Shortoff direct from the house and went down to Lake James a few times. The gravel road was longer than we expected. It was perfectly fine to drive in a regular car, but getting in and out for activities or supplies took some time everyday. Our only wish would have been to have an outdoor table for eating out on the deck because we loved the mountain views and fresh air so much.

Perfect destination in the mountains

We were so impressed about the cabin. Everything was so new, clean, little surprise for kids ;-) We have rented so many property for the last 7 years and this was the number one. Katherine and Brian were so helpful, and thoughtful all the time. We will definitely come back to stay again. I need to mention one thing; since the cabin was built recently there were plenty of stink bugs which wasn't a big deal for us.

We started our journey as high school sweethearts and became a military family with 3 children. We designed the floor plan to support 3 families coming together for vacations and the holidays. We enjoy hearing stories about our guests' experiences and are grateful to be able to provide opportunities for others to escape into nature. Our furniture business built many of the custom pieces of furniture throughout the cabin.

We limit our rental season for the cabin so we can gift cabin stays for charity silent auctions raising money for a local foster community, military families, and schools. It's our way to give back and help the community.

Why they chose this property

We chose this gated community for the private & spacious 10-acre lots, access to the Wolf Pit Trailhead, & proximity to Lake James. We wanted to be just outside the touristy areas but not too far from Raleigh & Charlotte either. We felt like this was a safe place to teach the kids about nature and get out of the suburbs. The neighborhood has diverse wildlife and we see black bears, turkeys, bobcats, coyotes, turtles, and rabbits. You can hear the coyotes howling on the mountain late at night by the fire pit. The neighbors are friendly and are always willing to help out anyone in need.

We enjoy spending our time at the cabin swimming and fishing on Lake James or hiking up Shortoff Mountain to see the beautiful views of Lake James and the Linville Gorge. Hiking on the Fonta Flora Trails around Lake James is a little bit easier with small children and great mountain biking for the bigger kids.

In the winter, our favorite activity is snow tubing at Jonah's Ridge! Our second favorite place to visit is Apple Hill Orchard in Morganton which is so much fun with delicious cider slushies and apple picking from late summer into fall. The Fonta Flora Brewery at Whippoorwill Farm has a fantastic pizza food truck, beer & a fun area for kids to play and run around. Nearby Perry's Berry's Winery and Vineyard serves ice cream and has game tables for kids. Downtown Morganton has great restaurants, shops & breweries as well. There are many iconic waterfalls within driving distance and Asheville is about an hour away.

What makes this property unique

This cabin is unique in its location to the Linville Gorge and Lake James, the architectural beauty of the log cabin, the wild life immersion, and the ability for three families to comfortably come together. The cabin is furnished with many pieces of bespoke furniture that complement the surrounding beauty.
