About this property

Stunning Lighthouse Location with Panoramic Ocean Views

There are two parts to the property but they are one unit. In 1843 the Lighthouse Commissioners, responsible for the safety of those at sea, built Crookhaven lighthouse and the adjoining cottage. Perched over the entrance to the natural harbour of Crookhaven, for over 160 years the cottage sheltered the Lightkeepers' families. When the Lighthouse was first automated (it is still fully operational) the Commissioners no longer needed the accommodation provided by the cottage and ownership changed hands.

The new owners have fully refurbished the 1843 cottage and this part of the property now comprises 2 double bedrooms with an additional room containing a double pull-out bed and a stairway to a large living space converted from what had been the quarters of three families. This large living room contains extensive seating, satellite TV, DVD, and views in all directions. Also downstairs is a shower room, kitchen and dining area. The structural integrity of the 1843 cottage has been preserved with the layout of the downstairs rooms reflecting the original plan.

Across the small yard is the extraordinary light filled space that is the 'longhouse'. In 2008 the owners completed a radical design consisting of a rectangular glass walled cuboid resting on two new bedrooms and a second bathroom. This wonderful addition allows for spectacular views from the upper level through 270 degrees. In a feature article on visiting Ireland, US Airways Magazine (January 2012, page 38, available online) recommends the property as a fabulous place to stay and says that if you dream of ocean views, this property tops the list 'complete with floor-to-ceiling windows revealing the Atlantic's hypnotic blue waves'!

The upper level contains a fully fitted kitchen, a dining table seating 8/10, a wood burning fireplace, a High Definition TV and Blu-ray disk player together with comfortable seating throughout. Along the length of this level is a balcony from which the views need to be seen to be believed, ranging from the natural harbour of Crookhaven past the world famous Fastnet Lighthouse 7 miles off-shore, to Baltimore, Cape Clear and Roaring Water Bay with its '100 isles'.

Although built on 'Rock Island', this is not a true island, at least for the past several hundred years. Access is along a beautiful stone-walled 'lighthouse' roadway which undulates across the fields of heather and gorse for a mile or so. Just 2 miles away you will find Goleen with its shops, pubs and first class restaurant, Heron's Cove. Across the bay is the sailing village of Crookhaven, which for centuries was the first port of call for vessels arriving from the New World destined for the North West of Europe.

In winter there is always a welcoming fire awaiting you there in O'Sullivan's Bar and in summer a flurry of activity on the harbourside as sailors and boat people of all ages and nationalitiies set to sea or disembark in search of one of the mouthwatering seafood bars and restaurants on the seafront.

Around the next bay is the end of the Mizen Peninsula with its rugged coastline, the surfing mecca and golden sands of Barleycove Beach and at the end of the road a mile or two further on, the most south-westerly tip of Ireland. There you'll find a visitor centre and spectacular walks laid out along the rocky coastline leading to the recently re-built and re-opened pedestrian bridge over to the Mizen Lighthouse and Fog-Signal Station. Next stop America!

Owing to the location of the property on a cliff overlooking the sea, the property may not be suitable for small children, unless under constant adult supervision within and without the property.

Incredible views
A modern glass wing and an old Victorian cottage make up this listing. As it was just my friend and me, we stayed in the modern glass wing and as we didn’t used the old Victorian cottage, this review is mainly about the modern part. Incredible views from the upstairs living room. The downstairs bedrooms have doors which open onto the courtyard. You fall asleep and wake to the sound of the ocean. The property was clean, although some of the upstairs seating and the general paintwork was just starting to feel a little tired. But that said, your eyes are taken to the stunning 270 degree views out to sea and across the peninsulas. The beds were comfy. The water was hot and the shower pressure was good. A couple of things to know. To reach the lighthouse you have to drive down a very narrow walled lane - amount a mile long ( at least it felt like a mile). I clipped the wing mirrors on our car twice - soooo before you go down the lane, bring your wing mirrors in, and if you’re renting a car, don’t rent a wide one. The second thing is that the modern wing is essentially a green house and on warm days, with the doors shut, the interior heats up (to 34 c !!) - even with the shades pulled down. We would return from a day out and fling open the doors. There is a small terrace and a gantry/balcony off the upper living room which a wonderful for enjoying the sea breezes. Beaches, walks, restaurants are all nearby. Would recommend.

Spectacular accommodation
Our overall experience staying at this location was a 10 out of 10. The facilities were magnificent and the view was simply stunning. From the very first contact with the owner on booking this exquisite accommodation to the very pleasant experience with Rose the caretaker made us feel right at home. Our family are originally from West Cork and all agree that this is perhaps the single most impressive accommodation location that they have ever experienced. I would highly recommend this property to anybody interested in experiencing Ireland in all of its glory. Thanks to Margaret for allowing us the opportunity to stay in your spectacular property. We will book again, that is a certainty.

Five star holiday
This property and its location actually exceeds the pictures and description online; it is a spectacular venue in and out and I would love to go back! It has everything you might require for home from home comforts, the views of and exposure to the sea are second to none. The lighthouse fils the West wing window and the sunrise the east. It’s a special place without a doubt.

Quality-time in bester Lage

Beautiful location
The accommodation perfectly meets the expectations raised by the pictures on the Internet. The apartments are located on Rock Island at the entrance to Crookhaven harbour. You can experience the wind and surf directly and enjoy the view of Fastnet Rock from the terrace outside. Mizen Head, Garinish Island and other sights can be explored from there. It was just great and we would like to come back again soon.

Amazing experience
My family of five had an incredible week at the lighthouse. We easily found activities and day trips in this area of Cork that we loved, as well as friendly people and some great food, but we all looked forward to returning to the lighthouse each afternoon. My husband found everything he needed in the kitchen to cook most nights, and the house was full of board games and books. We found that almost all activities are exciting and relaxing when undertaken in a glass room overlooking the ocean! The area around the house had so many stunning views and places to explore, and the many wildflowers were just gorgeous. After a week’s stay, none of us were ready to leave, and my six-year-old has hatched a few schemes to get back that involve ponies. A few things to know: you do absolutely need a car, and we (Americans used to roomy cars, roomy roads, and driving on the right) found the roads challenging in general and the long narrow lane lined with rock walls to reach the house really difficult. We had the hang of it by the end of the week, but kept a policy of only leaving and returning once each day, with 4-5 minutes of silence in the car so the driver could give full attention to getting us in or out and we could all hope that we wouldn’t meet a car going the opposite direction (which luckily, we didn’t). It was beyond worth it to stay in such an amazing place but definitely a consideration for planning. Also, there are a number of businesses that only take cash, and the closest ATM is in Schull. In terms of safety, after establishing some ground rules, we felt like the setup was perfect for our 6, 9, and 12-year-olds to enjoy, but it would have been tough to relax with, say, a strong-willed, climbing 4-year-old. Our stay at the lighthouse made for an unforgettable family trip. We feel so lucky to have been there.

Perfect
We spent a really enjoyable break over Christmas with my sisters family and parents who live on the other side of the harbour who joined us for Christmas celebrations. Thank you for the Christmas decorations you added. The accommodation split over the two lighthouse keepers cottages suited us very well as our older independent children had their own space. The location is stunning, the views inspirational and the house is cosy, stylish and was very well equipped for our needs, even the walled single lane track from the main road revealed a stunning view at every turn. Plenty to do here in winter. Who wouldn't enjoy relaxing, playing board games, reading, walking (Brow Head, Barleycove beach, Three Castles Head pier, the old mountain road to Goleen) watching the wild life and whiling away time in pubs. We all wished we could have had more time at the lighthouse but even so, our short stay was very recuperative. A car is a must. Thank you for letting us stay.

A welcome return to the fabulous lighthouse
We love this place. Last visited 8 years ago and the location and glass box living space is unsurpassable. 4 seasons in a day right outside your window. We will most definitely return again. The only comments we would make are that the kitchen equipment is in need of updating and adding to and 8 years on the shower room and facilities in the cottage could do with some renovation and improvement as there is a real difference on the sleeping and bathroom arrangements and comfort in the main house and in the cottage. Nothing though can detract from its location and the design of the living space.

Needs much improvement
We were a group of 8 who stayed for 2 weeks. 4 adults, 3 infants and a small child. Upon arrival we found the property very dirty. Dust buildup, spider webs in light fixtures, grease covered kitchen, and unusable dishes in the kitchen due to being dirty. Our initial disappointment was only to grow as throughout our stay we found lamps with no light bulbs, broken barbecue grill, and kitchen cabinets in disrepair, such that it was difficult to open or close them due to this damage. The furnishings are completely sat through and are in need of being replaced. This is a unique property with difficult challenges to maintain. We fully understand that. However, having to spend a portion of your vacation cleaning a rental that you have paid so much for was an enormous wet blanket on our trip. This is by far the most we have ever spent on a vacation rental and had high expectations. It is with much regret to say that we could not recommend this property. At least not in the current state it is in. We had addressed several of these issues with the owner and property manager and they were sympathetic. That being said, the damage was done and we really hope these concerns are seriously addressed because the views are stunning.

Our overall experience was great, and the good weather didn’t hurt either.
The views from the Long Hose are absolutely beautiful, as are the other amenities. The only downside is the one car access road. When you meet another vehicle going in the opposite direction, someone has to back up a fair distance. There are stone walls on each side of the one lane road so you can’t pull over.

Stunning location!
This is by far one of the best places we have stayed along the Wild Atlantic Way of Ireland! The views from the main house are stunning and always changing. This is an excellent property for a two family getaway. Beaches are close by car as are shops and restaurants in Crookhaven, Golleen, and Schull. You won't be disappointed.

Tremendous getaway
I recently spent a week at the Crookhaven Lighthouse property with my family who joined me from the US. We had a fabulous experience from start to finish. The property manager met us at the house as arranged and made us feel very welcome. The stunning scenery, paired with the beautiful accommodations and terrific local people in Goleen and Crookhaven who made us feel right at home, all contributed to an outstanding stay. The longhouse and cottage are both well-equipped with everything you need and the furniture upstairs in the amazing "glass room" is very comfortable. We marveled at seeing Fastnet Lighthouse from "our" lighthouse and if you didn't move from that spot all week, you'd go home happy. However, there are such gorgeous spots to visit in the area, we were glad we ventured to nearby Mizen Head, Barleycove Beach and Three Castle Head, not to mention a breathtaking afternoon at the stunning Sheep's Head Bay, with sweeping views of Bantry and Dunmanus. All of the local restaurants we ate in were great (service and food) and I highly recommend the baked goods at Along the Way, the cafe up the road in the village. We had wonderful walks right from the property and since it was early in the season, we felt like we were the only people out there. It's truly an inspiring place if you want to write, take photos, connect with family and friends, or just get away from it all. The only small criticism we had is of the mattresses in the long house, which are in need of updating. Other than that we had a perfect stay and we would definitely recommend it and book again. I've had many wonderful trips to Ireland over the years, but this one is at the top of the list.

Spectacular views in a very special property
We had an unforgettable Christmas in this most beautiful place. Gannets fishing right outside our windows, three walls of glass make you feel you're right in the middle of the view - all with underfloor heating, big comfy sofas and a brilliant kitchen. Only small criticism is mattresses are not great in the bedrooms ... Highly recommended nonetheless. There's a cute village within walking distance which has a couple of bars and a very well stocked shop. Peaceful, beautiful countryside all around and a view of Fastnet lighthouse which is just magical. Plenty of lovely walks and drives, and only a couple of hours drive from Cork. We LOVED it.

A perfect place for relaxation and rest
We stayed for two weeks at Crookhaven Lighthouse and we spent much time watching seals and dolphins while sitting in the living room. We were fascinated by ever changing lighting conditions during day time and by intense starry skies during night time. A perfect place for relaxation and rest. Thank you for letting us be here.

Heavenly!
I was looking for something a little different for my husband to celebrate a significant birthday. After a lot of research and brain- storming, I decided to go with a trip to the Crookhaven Lighthouse. This proved to be an inspired choice. The lighthouse has the most amazing location, with panoramic views out onto the sea with the Fastnet Lighthouse in the distance. The view is truly amazing and this novelty did not wear off over the few days. We went in March, so found that we could make the most of the view at daytime meal times and in the afternoon as the eating and relaxation area are all upstairs with that view. We loved to face out to the view in the afternoons until the light faded, whilst reading or just staring at the view and listening to music. Then, we lit a fire in the glass-doored, midwall-level fireplace, and recommenced the relaxation (tip: bring your own fuel, if you can. It was difficult to find locally. Eventually got it in Schull.) We hated leaving the place, and preferred to dine there each evening, though that had not been the intention prior to our visit. The facilities there are excellent, and the house was warm and comfortable. The focus is definitely on the upstairs with downstairs comfortable, and more functional. There is a shower and bath. The DVDs of old movies were a nice touch, and we made the most. My husband is still talking about the wonderful trip we had and what a special place this lighthouse is. We would have absolutely no hesitation recommending this holiday location and will return. It is a little piece of Heaven in an idyllic, quiet place. You really will feel you are getting away from it all.
