This is a historic 19th century schoolhouse full of character with original blackboards and maps, but with all the creature comforts, including a brand new fitted kitchen fully equipped for fine dining. The schoolhouse is near to our farm with 250 acres of woods and open pastures which is stunning during the Autumn foliage. The area provides some of the top mountain biking and hiking trails in New England plus fishing, tubing and swimming in the local rivers. Vermont's renowned craft breweries and distilleries are in easy driving distance, as are foodie havens such as Stowe and Waterbury. Remote, restful but connected with our high speed fibre optic internet so also good if working is necessary.

The perfect kind of place to stay in VT. You can get anywhere in the state within 2 hours of scenic driving. The school house is a short drive from town and you can see the Milky Way at night.
The schoolhouse was just what we were looking for- a quiet country location with good walking, hiking, exploring, and close to Randolph. We appreciated the ephemera- books, maps, newspapers. Looking through the shelves and cabinets was an adventure unto itself. We spend time outdoors so one plus would have been more comfortable outdoor furniture.
Thank you, Terrie, we have a terrific time!
The Schoolhouse was lovely, spotless, and there were endless things to look at, read, etc. The setting was peaceful and beautiful. We look forward to staying there again soon!
Overall it was a prefect blend of quaint and comfortable. It is a real one-room schoolhouse, which is apparent as some features of it have been preserved, yet it also has a modern kitchen, bath, and bedroom that are all well appointed and comfortable. It's in an especially lovely setting (even for Vermont), on a private road off a winding dirt road nest to a small field with a view and not much else around so it's quiet and serene. Another nice thing is that the town of Randolph is a short drive (a few miles) away, so restaurants, a bakery, shops, drug store are handy.
We stayed for 4 nights, having come from the UK to visit family in Vermont. Excellent communication with Terrie before our trip and Philip visited soon after our arrival to peronally welcome us. Peaceful, comfortable and comprehensively equipped, it was perfectly located for access to town and for exploring the local area. As a retired primary teacher, it was wonderful to see all the old school furniture, equipment and books.
This amazing school house in rural Vermont was the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the Fall colors. Well worth the 45 minute drive from Dartmouth as we were in town for Family Weekend. So clean and I wish I had more time to flip through the books in the house. The host left delicious homemade jam that we finished by the second morning.
A 19th century restored schoolhouse with all amenities to have a peaceful, relaxing stay in the Vermont countryside. Well equipped kitchen and comfortable bed. The location is perfect. Far away from any main roads, allow fora very peaceful stay. The location in the state, makes it a convenient place to drive to all the amazing sites in Vermont. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, with a good dose of historical charm, this is place to go.
A converted 1860 schoolhouse with many original features in idyllic Vermont countryside. Modern, well equipped kitchen, bedroom and bath and as well as great views in central Vermont!
Our family spent a long weekend at the school house. We were greeted with a lovely note and basket of maple syrup and fresh jam. The School house is clean and fresh. The kitchen was just the right size for making our meals. It is only about 8 minutes from town and easy to get too. Our son slept in the school room on the Futon that was made up as a bed and very comfortable. Our 11 year old loved the sand table and chalkboards. Plenty of places to ride bikes and hike. We enjoyed spending time outside and exploring the property. Philip and Terrie are wonderful, friendly and welcoming. We recommend this location for any trip to Vt.
This place was even better than the pictures and description showed! The place was cozy and comfortable with all the amenities we could need, and my kid loved the school room vibe. Plus the owners left us a lovely basket with red/black currant jam and maple syrup which was lovely and very appreciated. Would absolutely stay here again!

Many of these do not apply to remote locations such as this site. It was a wonderful place to relax and refresh an appreciation for nature. We have already suggested this site to friends and family.
Very nice place to stay. Philip and Terrie gave us all the information we needed to check in and check out and were available if we had questions. The property was beautiful, clean and well stocked with all the essentials. A microwave would be a great addition, but that won't hold us back from coming back again. Thanks for a great get-a-way.
We loved our stay at schoolhouse! Lovely location in the country with all necessary ammenities. Superbly comfortable bed. Would love to return someday.
The school house is exactly as described and has a nice folder that recommends shops, local food outlets and activities. Whilst I used most of those I also had time to work in the property in a quiet and undisturbed way. The setting is ideal to have time to yourself/ves away from fast paced life. That being said the internet is excellent. the kitchen well equipped and everything works in the property. Enjoyed it a lot.
Peaceful, beautiful location. Property neat, clean and organized.
Kind hosts.

About the host
Hosted by Philip Stoltzfus and Terrie Alafat
Terrie is a born and bred New Englander having grown up on a farm in nearby N.H., and is an avid skier, hiker and maker of blueberry jam. Her husband Philip is a certified flatlander born abroad to a U.S. diplomatic family, who fell in love with Vermont at an early age. They live part of the year in London, England, but increasingly gravitate to the farm and are always there when the schoolhouse has visitors.
Why they chose this property
We bought the adjoining farm 25 years ago to ensure that our London raised children retained a connection with our US based family. Over the years it has proven a place of refuge for ourselves, our children, and our friends, enabling a reconnection with nature and rural ways that are quite remote to busy urban lives. When our neighbours asked us to buy the School House with its particularly deep history in the local community, we jumped at the chance as we saw it as a way of introducing others to this unique part of the world.
What makes this property unique
We were first drawn to the School House because of our desire to preserve an example of that iconic American rural institution, the one-room school house where a teacher taught children from kindergarten to 12th grade. We have kept the old blackboards, pre-WWII roll down maps, sandbox, calendars, and encyclopaedias which recapture that bygone era. The building now has an added bedroom, bathroom, and beautiful fitted kitchen, but the old school room itself is the magic of the place, with its big square space and many windows looking out to the surrounding farms. The area is covered with hardwoods so in Autumn the house is bathed in the spectacular fall colours that bring so many of us to Vermont.
