About this property

Stunning house overlooking own lake just 25 min outside of Stockholm

In the middle of the beautiful Stockholm archipelago surrounded by a fairytale forest, you will find a driveway leading up to the house that lie just in front of a lake shared only with one other neighbor.

The house, built as a hunting lodge in 1910, looks like a house from one of Astrid Lindgren’s children story books. The 23000 sqm grounds full of flowers and mature trees leads down to a beautiful lake with its own little pier from which you cannot see any other house - only nature - and it's hard to believe you are just 20 minutes away from Stockholm.

The carefully renovated house has 4 bedrooms, dining room with doors leading out to the big sunny terrace, living room with open fire place, 2 TV rooms (one with open fire place) and a super modern kitchen - all rooms with view of the lake. The house is decorated with antiques from China mixed with traditional Swedish country style furniture. Ideal to explore sea, nature, golf, sailing, swimming or simply shopping in Stockholm!

Beautiful house in tranquil setting
We spent three weeks as a family at Kulla Gard in July/August 2016. As we had already rented the house three years earlier we were very keen to return. The setting is spectacular, with gardens surrounding the house, the lake behind, and the whole surrounded by pine and birch forest. The house is really well designed for family living with plenty of living space both inside and outside. The kitchen is fully equipped with modern utensils and ample crockery and glasses. There is also a large barbecue under a covered porch, which has a dining area and heaters for chilly evenings (although we did not need to use them as the weather was excellent) and a second large dining area on the open decking. The house is furnished to a very high standard, with comfortable sofas in both the main sitting room and the television room . The bedrooms are spacious and the beds very comfortable. There is internet access and cable TV, but we hardly used the latter as there were so many other distractions. The jetty, was a great place to sunbathe, to swim and fish from and we enjoyed feeding the crayfish that lived underneath. The rowing boat provided was great fun. The small children in our party had plenty of space to run around and play games. We explored the forest and picked blueberries, which were ripe at the time we were there and enjoyed making blueberry pies. The more energetic of us ran and or cycled along the forest tracks. For lovers of wildlife it is an ideal location. There are grebes on the lake. eagles overhead, deer in the garden and moose in the forest, not to mention a multitude of small birds, rabbits etc.. The photographs on the web-site do not do justice to the house or its surroundings. It is truly a beautiful and tranquil place to stay. It is surprising how convenient the location is for access to Stockholm or to the ferries to the outer archipelago. A short car journey to Varmdö Marknad and we were able to take the bus into the city – 20 minutes into the centre and no worries about parking! A similar car journey in the opposite direction and the ferry took us to Sandhamn and its beautiful beaches. There is a good restaurant/pizzeria close by and excellent supermarkets and other restaurants a short drive away. Christina and Lennart, the owners, are very friendly and extremely helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for them to ensure that we had an enjoyable holiday. We very much look forward to visiting again.

A fabulous place for a relaxing family vacation!
We rented Kulla Gard for a week at the end of July. The house and grounds are every bit as wonderful as they appear in the photos. The place was quite clean, the appliances were modern and the kitchen worked well for five cooks of differing abilities. It's an easy drive or bus ride from Stockholm. There is a bus stop at the end of the lane and it's a short hike down a tree lined alley to get to the house, although it would not be a fun walk with luggage or groceries. There's a decent grocery store just a few minutes' drive away. The island's hiking/equestrian trail runs right beyond the barn. We wished we had brought some sturdy bicycles and there was no place to rent them locally. Horses would have been even better! We did notice that the barn had been renovated with nice box stalls, although there is no mention on the rental site about barn usage. There are two upstairs bedrooms with beds for couples and another semi-divided bedroom that is set up with two twin beds suitable for children. Our adult daughter slept downstairs in the library, which has its own full bathroom. This bed would have been cramped for two people. The deck has a roll-out awning, which was perfect for both rainy and sunny days (we had both). It's a great place for evening cocktails overlooking the lake. We never could get the wireless modem to work, which turned out to be a blessing. After two days, no one missed it! Our Blackberries and Iphones worked fine, so we were not completely "cut off". The owners have probably fixed the modem problem by now. We spent the week rowing, swimming, hiking, throwing balls into the water for the dog, sitting on the deck and watching the swans, playing board games, reading and taking turns cooking. We had intended to travel around more, but Kulla Gard was too inviting. We would advise bringing bug spray, as there are mosquitoes and ticks. We were quite intrigued by the white snails, which we don't have in the United States, and also with the lack of night time cricket noise, which is always a factor in country evenings in California. We saw our first glow worm, but it was all alone. Was it not really glow worm season? The owners were quite gracious in all of our dealings and the house manual provided was extremely thorough. We would love to return.
