## Neighborhood
Grasse has a long and varied past and a rich heritage... But also toilet waters, soaps, powders... whose scents are provided by the flowers of the surrounding countryside. For several years the city of Grasse has been part of the material world heritage of unesco. In the 19th century, Grasse had become the world capital of perfumery and a major tourist destination.
Only 15 km from Cannes, at 300-400 m altitude, Grasse is a breath of fresh air in a green setting of mountains, forests and caves. Although it is the fourth largest city in the Alpes-Maritimes, Grasse and its country are a place of vacation and rest. Illustrious people have stayed there, from Princess Pauline Bonaparte, the Emperor's sister, in 1807-08 to actor and writer Dirk Bogarde, including Queen Victoria. And even Napoleon, but he was in too much of a hurry to dwell on it.
Coming from Cannes, the visitor passes in front of the Palais des Congrès located in a Belle-Epoque building, formerly the Casino de Grasse. Further on, the splendid 19th century villas and the superb 17th and 18th century mansions begin to rise (Hotel de Cabris, Hotel de Ponteves, Court de Fontmichel). And then, the Place aux Aires welcomes you, bordered by arcades and houses with red and yellow ocher facades with a fountain with four superimposed basins in the middle. Here you can take a break on one of the café or restaurant terraces and taste the local speciality, the “fassoum”, courgette flower fritters.
From the square you start to go back in time descending towards the old center. The maze of narrow, shady alleys that make up the historic district could be the setting for a swashbuckling film. Even if no mysterious masked swordsman is likely to emerge from a vaulted passage, you will be surprised at the bend of each staircase or square.
With their houses and buildings from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, the sometimes slightly dirty streets retrace the development of the town: the square Saracen tower, the remains of the 16th century ramparts, the former bishopric which has now become the town hall. .. Unfortunately, some buildings are showing their age and a facelift is in order.
All the streets converge towards Place du Puy and Notre Dame du Puy cathedral (also from the arcade overlooking Place Godeau). Built in the 10th-11th century and remodeled in the 17th century, its huge bell tower was added in the 17th century. This Romanesque church houses a magnificent altarpiece by Louis Brea, paintings by Rubens, a painting by Fragonard, stained glass windows and statues.
But the history of Grasse is also in its perfumes.
The tannery was the main activity of the city from the Middle Ages until its peak in the 17th century. With the concept and then the great popularity of scented gloves, this period saw the birth of perfumery, which has since reigned supreme.
Today the industry with its 30 perfumeries remains discreet but three manufacturers - the Parfumerie Fragonard, its historic factory and perfumery, the Parfumerie Molinard and the Factory and Museum Galimard - open their doors and offer free guided tours. The visits show the stages of production, from the collection of flowers to the bottling, and at the end the visitor can create and take away his own perfume.
The International Museum of Perfumery (MIP), located in the city center of Grasse, retraces
in an exceptional setting, 3000 years of the history of perfume and Les Jardins du MIP in Mouans-Sartoux, house a conservatory of perfume plants.
Other museums of interest are located in sumptuous mansions.
