About this property

Antietam Toll House~ an historic waterfront cabin

The Antietam Toll House (Instagram @antietamtollhouse) is a recently renovated historic property circa 1800 which sits on the bank-head of the Antietam stream, complete with a private fishing hole. The property is partially fenced and sits at the end of a private drive on over a half acre of land. This was the gatekeepers house for the original toll bridge which was burned by General Lee's army on their retreat from Gettysburg.
Secluded, yet close to amenities and attractions, this property is the perfect place for an artist retreat, respite from the city or a base from which to explore the local gems of the area. Wineries, the Appalachian trail, Antietam and Gettysburg battlefields and Ski Liberty and more all nearby. The area is rich in history. https://waynesboropa.org/history/
As this was the original toll house the new road and bridge run behind this property. While private you can expect some road noise outside. Historical notes. Iron bridge

“Ever since I was given the title of Historian from Washington Township, my main focus has been on the Monterey Pass Battlefield. However, Monterey Pass is only a piece of the puzzle when it comes to the larger picture. On Leitersburg Pike, Route 316 West (South Potomac Street in Waynesboro) stood a wooden bridge that spanned the little Antietam Creek in Washington Township, Franklin County just west of Waynesboro was burned by the Confederate rearguard during the Retreat from Gettysburg. Here are two official reports from the Union army that would eventually ford the Antietam Creek to follow be hind the rearguard of the Confederate infantry during their march to Williamsport, Maryland.
“Preparations were immediately made to carry out the above orders. Rations were procured and cooked under the directions of Quartermaster John C. Mullett, and orders were received to form in line at 3 p. m. of the 11th instant. Here, at this time, we joined you brigade for the first time, having been separated, as before mentioned, during our stay at Waynesborough, and marched down the hill on to the road; halted for the other regiments in our brigade to come into line, where we had to wait one full hour before they came into line, a delay, I am happy to say, which the gallant Sixty-eight regiment never caused any officer or brigade while in the service, being always prompt. Preparations being completed, orders were given, Battalion, right face; forward march!” and we were off for “Dixie,” our march being on the direct road to Hagerstown from Waynesborough. Outmarch was with quick step for the first 4 miles. When we arrived at the Little Antietam – a river, from the heavy rains which had fallen, had become much swollen, and was very rough and rapid, the bridge over which had been destroyed by Lee’s army, on their retreat after the Gettysburg fight, only three days before, which we had to ford -we had now advanced some 2 miles across the line into Maryland. After fording and getting everything across, our march was slow and cautious, being in close proximity with the rebel pickets, and every moment expecting an engagement. Marching slowly, the night very dark, mud deep, we came to a halt in an open field about 10 o’clock, where the division bivouacked for the remainder of the night having sent out pickets and taken every precaution against a surprise.” L. THOMAS, Adjutant-General
“Bivouacked at Funkstown; terrible rain-storm all night and until 10 a. m. July 8. But little to eat; marched on to Waynesborough, near to Maryland line, a considerable village, where we found the Sixth Army of Corps [Neill’s Brigade] of ok the Potomac bivouacked on the hills south of the village. July 9, 10, 11. Pleasant weather, and rations just before sundown orders to march; marched; forded Antietam Creek, the timber of the bridge, burned by the rebels, yet smoking; 11 p. m. bivouacked at Leitersburg, in a clover-field.” PHILIP S. CROOKE, Brigadier-General, Fifth Brigade

Very nice property along side of the Antietam Creek. Wonderful rustic charm with modern conveniences. Brilliantly located between Hagerstown MD and Gettysburg PA— good jumping off point for antiques or history.

Wonderful cabin for enjoying winter!
We loved our stay at the Toll House cottage on Antietam Creek. We went to enjoy the fresh snow with my dog, but as other reviewers have indicated it would be terrific during the warmer months too. The land it’s on is gorgeous and inside the furniture is comfortable, the kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, and the wood stove and other heaters kept us warm. The location is convenient to multiple Civil War battlefields and Liberty Mountain is close by for skiers. Just a note: While the kitchen is well-stocked with pots, pans, trays, cutlery, and appliances, it lacks the spices and oils I’ve typically found in Vrbo homes. Be sure to bring salt, pepper, olive oil and any spices you’d like.

really fun first time to the area
All in all we had a great trip! Our only complaint is that the listing states there is a hot tub, but there is not. My husband and I were really looking forward to having a relaxing soak after long days walking the battlefields, so it was disappointing to have that let down but other than that we had a great time and really enjoyed the cabin and the creek. Especially our pup, he would have swam all day if we let him.

Little piece of paradise
We had a wonderful stay at this charming little cabin, located in a beautiful location on the stream. Yeah, there's a little bit of road noise, but it's easily ignored and the cabin is actually semi-isolated. In fact you can see it from the road only if you know it's there. The place is perfect! I wish we were able to spend more time there. Thank you for sharing your little piece of paradise!

Perfect stay
This cottage is just perfect and I plan on staying here again. It has everything you need while on vacation and the kitchen is amazing! You think since it’s an 1800’s toll house that it would be really rustic but it was updated with modern amenities and still has the original charm. The only problem I had is that the Wi-Fi was pretty awful and I couldn’t watch TV and my cell phone didn’t have service and without Wi-Fi it was pretty useless except for texting. I rebooted the modem several times. I had books so it turned on out fine!

sweet cottage
I was exited about this cottage because we could take our dog and there was a fenced area. Hubby loved the creek, he fished a lot. Caught a lot too. We traveled to Gettysburg and around Waynesboro, but mostly chilled and rested. Love the history, here in this property.

Quiet, tranquil getaway close to historic civil war locations
Perfect location, equidistant from Gettysburg, PA & Antietam, MD. We spent a day exploring each battlefield, then came back to relax & unwind with a nice cup of tea. The front porch is great for a relaxing morning, reading while enjoying some coffee or an evening listening to nature & watching the stars. The fire pit seating area is another great spot for some star-gazing. Although situated just off the road, we didn’t notice the “traffic” others have mentioned. We are city-dwellers who enjoy their time taking it easy in the country, so maybe it’s just a matter of the noise level to which you’re accustomed. We had a delightful stay & highly recommend this cabin for anyone looking to unplug, unwind, & maybe explore some of the nearby civil war history.

Love it here
This was our third time staying here we try to go every yr if we can. We enjoy the peace here when you live in a city it is amazing being in nature for a week and away from all that. Our dogs enjoy having two yards that they like making us get up and let them out to both a couple times a day so they can go explore but hey it’s their vacation to if that’s their fun time lol.

Antietam toll house cabin
We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. The cabin itself was roomy and relaxing. Loved the gas fireplace and gas stove for cooking! The small fenced yard was perfect for our dog. We also enjoyed the outdoor picnic /fire pit area! We even got a close up of an adult bald eagle that flew across the stream and rested on the lower branch of the mature tree on the property! The location was not as isolated as I thought it would be from the photo and we went in late fall! I’m sure the area around the cabin is much more scenic from late spring through early fall. There are other homes nearby and the cabin rests just below and a stones throw from a two lane road! The road noise people talked about on the reviews was not a big deal and after you pull up in the parking area, the cabin that is right off the road feels more…well Woodsy! Very convenient location! You’re just 5 minutes from the nearby small town with plenty of places to eat and in addition, you’re just a scenic 35 minute drive to Gettysburg which is a great place to visit! Michele was an excellent host with many recommendations! She was very helpful and checking in and out process was super easy!
