Inspired by Japanese tradition and stunningly situated in the midst of a coastal redwood grove, this Sea Ranch retreat is unlike any other. This tranquil studio home was seemingly tucked into the forest, with ferns growing right up to its edge and no trees removed to make way for its footprint.

Measuring at just 384 square feet, this studio-style home makes masterful use of its space, layout, and natural surroundings. As you step inside, you'll be greeted by a traditional tatami mat floor and lofty ceilings with skylights that let in views of the redwood canopy. Sliding glass doors on two sides of the house open to the wrap-around porch; additional sliding doors of delicate rice paper allow you privacy when you choose. The living room, the dining area, the kitchenette, and the bedroom (the futon) come together simply and beautifully in this one studio space. The streamlined kitchenette features essential appliances (including a gas stove and a dishwasher), a large window to gaze through as you cook, and rice paper doors that conceal the space when it's not in use.

You can unroll your yoga mats on the porch each morning, and sip a soothing mug of tea at the bistro table or the kitchenette island afterward. In the evenings, there's a gas fireplace to toast your toes as you read or choose a Netflix movie to watch on the wall-mounted flatscreen TV. When it's time to turn in for the night, the futon in the main living space folds out into a bed; an additional, high-end airbed is provided as well.

This home sits among the redwoods on the east side of Highway 1 in Sea Ranch. You'll be practically around the corner from The Hot Spot, where you'll find picnic tables and barbecues on the Gualala River, and a little over a mile from Pebble Beach and the incredible Bluff Trail on Sea Ranch's ocean coast. The home is situated between two of the Sea Ranch recreation centers, with Ohlson two miles up the coast and Moonraker two miles down the coast (each offers a heated outdoor pool, saunas, and tennis). Downtown Gualala, where you'll find the Surf Market, charming Trinks Cafe, and other local favorites, is eight miles north.

Things to know:
High-speed WiFi
Kitchenette with an oven, a gas stove, a microwave, a toaster oven, a coffee maker, and pots and pans
No washer/dryer
Parking is on a landing below the home; you must follow a path through the trees to the front door

Couples Getaway

Late Valentines Gift for one another. Perfect stay, quiet neighborhood , beautiful morning walks, close to trails/oceanside. We hiked through Salt Point State Park so the home was a perfect location only 20 minutes away. Would recommend to couples or singles perfect tiny home. Built beautifully.

Beautiful and Serene

We loved staying here for two nights. We found everything we needed in the kitchen in order to make a simple pasta for dinner as well as coffee in the mornings. The fireplace and wifi worked great. Amazing cabin in the middle of the forest.

Charming compact space in lovely forested setting

The teahouse in a shaded forest setting, up a soft pathway, has lovely Japanese style shoji screens and tatami, which require special respectful consideration we were happy to provide in order to experience this delicate aesthetic. Our stay was peaceful and enjoyable. We would love to return.

Perfect

The Tea House was so lovely. Cozy but not cramped - the shoji screens and traditional Japanese decor were so special. We are definitely going to stay at this property again. It's a real stand out.

Nice sea ranch retreat

Exactly as described. A nice studio retreat with a full kitchen and bathroom and a sofa bed. The tea house sits up on a hill that is a winding slightly steep path from the parking spot. Very comfortable and quiet for 1-2 people.

Peaceful and intimate

Since we are advanced students of Chado, this was a perfect place for a too-short retreat. Future guests should be made aware of the extra fees and the 50-yard uphill narrow uneven path between parking and house

A hidden gem

Loved this special place. Location in the forest and special energy made this a great location for my retreat. The walk up to the house on the forest trail added to this special experience. I enjoyed the Japanese style decor. Eating meals on the outside patio right next to ferns and trees was one of my highlights. The kitchenette is well equipped, does not have dish washer. Shower bathroom and changing area are great. Only the sleeping situation is a little cumbersome. Once set up I slept reasonably comfortable. Thanks to the owners for letting us use their retreat space.

Wonderful

Everything was great and almost perfect. The decor was really nice. The sleeping arrangements need to be updated. The futon didn't latched on one side when reclining. My husband woke up with a back pain because it was hard. Maybe getting a sofa bed?

Tea House

lovely house. Getting up from road (walking) harder than said. Would make great difference to have info of the surroundings...walks..things to see. Major problem was sleeping. Need couch that can open for 2 people. we had to move the wheeled kitchen device to flattern couch and make it large enough. Not comfortable and in morning did LONG drive home !note :NOT made for 2 This could be fixed !! customers would be happy if fixed ! so simple ! Thanks..DO IT !

Patio door fell off with a slight touch. Perfect for 2 only. It was nice and very quite. I will try again maybe different place next time.

Mixed experience!

Let's lead with the good: this is a beautiful, uniquely designed rental quietly nestled in the woods. Waking up here is magical, particularly if you can spend extended time in the house. The rental was larger than we expected, the shower lovely, and it had a few household items already stocked we were happy to find (tea, etc.). It's a peaceful setting, and we did not hear any interference from the local airport nearby if that is a concern of yours. However, our first night staying in the rental was unacceptably cold. Someone (possibly a prior guest?) had extinguished the pilot light, so we did not have the gas fireplace. We couldn't get the thermostat to change, called support that night, and they had no way to help because the local office was closed. We were able to call Vacasa again and receive help the following day, but heating is so crucial that this heavily colored our stay. The pullout bed is quite stiff even with the mattress cover on top, but it is queen-sized when fully extended, and the blankets are heavy. Transparently, we also had momentary trouble on arrival finding the lockbox because it blends into the house. Other than these hiccups, we would certainly consider staying at the Tea House again.

Nice little house

We stayed two nights, and had good time. It was clean and cozy. It was big enough for two of us. The only problem was the lockbox. It was not easy to close it.

Secluded and Hard to find but worth the effort

Off the beaten track and you have to hike up from the parking area, but what a great, secluded spot! Love the Japanese style, quasi tea house design but with western conveniences built in yet discreetly hidden. The sofa sleeper is not big enough for a normal size person (fine for my my 5’2” wife, but not fine for 5’8” me.). So we laid out the futons which were slightly too wide for the space, but found that the comforter was too small for the futons. We made it work though. Sat on the wrap around veranda in the early afternoon sun, lush forest foliage, warm sun, cool breeze - perfect!

Bliss at The Tea House

This is the ultimate escape for one or two people! It's an authentic and architecturally interesting Japanese tea house, surrounded by old growth Redwood trees. The decor is beautiful and calming, and I appreciated the privacy as well as the hikes you can take right from the back door. It's ideal for a romantic get away or a moment to stop time and just be... I'll be going back for sure.
