About this property

It's time for fall colors, stay in this cabin in the woods.

Quiet cabin nestled in the mountains near all that Southwest Colorado offers. One mile from the lake and the national forest hiking, fishing, biking, and more. 45 minutes from Durango with shopping, rafting, DSNGRR Train, mountain biking, and hiking. Relax, unplug, and make memories.

This is a fun-filled family property. Enjoy quiet mornings in the Hammocks or Adirondack chairs throughout the property watching the sun come up in the valley. This is a great time to see deer in the yard eating the grass and flowers.

The Miners cabin is our guest cabin that is nestled in amongst 100 ft tall Blue Spruce trees with a nice front porch with a picnic table. On the main floor, you will find the living room, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom with 2 comfortable twin beds. Upstairs is a spacious room with a king bed and a sitting area with a queen-sized futon. Note that upstairs is accessed by a set of steep stairs.

Beautiful property in a wonderful location

The mountain cabin in the woods was perfect for our family getaway! The house has a fully stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, and wonderful spaces to hangout indoors and out – we especially enjoyed sitting around the firepit, listening to music and looking at the stars. The property is close to the lake, which is great for fishing and swimming. Shawn even helped us find great fishing spots and a rope swing – such fun! Highly recommend this property!

Great little cabin close to the lake!

This little cabin has great features for your vacation. It was just the two of us, but it can sleep a lot more. The owners of this cabin have thought of everything needed for a great vacation. The cabin was spotlessly clean, had all the things we needed, and was wonderfully decorated. There is no wi-fi at the cabin but there were movies provided (DVDs) for viewing. The communication was excellent with the owner-very responsive. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Miner's cabin and would go back in a heartbeat. It is close to Vallecito Lake and a beautiful drive to Durango. We highly recommend it!

Perfect spot to explore Vallecito and Durango

Our family had a wonderful 3 nights at the Miners Cabin. Shawn and Sarah were so welcoming and friendly. They shared info on all the best spots to fish, run, hike and explore. Our boys loved hanging out with their boys... from biking together to explore the surroundings to sharing stories around the campfire. The cabin was super cosy with comfy beds and very well equipped. This is a really special place, made even better by the most wonderful hosts.

Vallecito Getaway

We had a great time in Vallecito staying in the rustic cabin. We were able to drive into Durango for the day and explore Mesa Verde and another day we rented a jeep and drove to Silverton to the ghost towns and mines. Shawn provides a fly fishing lesson for a fee if interested and we did that and the kids learned a lot from him! We had a great time watching them learn the art of fly fishing. He suggested a guide service for the lake and it was great! We tried fishing for Pike but didn't get any, but caught lots of trout! Shawn also gave us recommendations on restaurants to try out and we went to all the ones he suggested and they were terrific! He is very kind and let us borrow his ice chest since we forgot ours. The only draw backs are that you can't fish in the pond (which we understood, just want people to be aware) and that while the Vallecito creek is on the property it is a little hard to access and difficult to fish in because there is quite a bit of brush that your pole will get hung in. The lake and other parts of the river are a quick drive though so we did that. This area is very quiet and quaint and we loved sitting around the firepit at night talking about our day. A great way to unwind and unplug.

Fun cabin and property in the woods!

We had a great time at Miner’s Cabin. Shawn and Sarah were great hosts. We had an enjoyable time relaxing on the deck of the cabin and roaming on the property and getting plenty of fresh air. The pond and river are right there and very accessible. The weather was perfect for our trip. Thanks for the fun stay!

Quiet relaxing vacation spot!

We had a great time staying at the Miners Cabin! Very quiet and relaxing. The owners and their family are very sweet and knowledgeable about the area. Close enough to Durango to drive and enjoy the activities like riding the train and shopping. Or drive up to Purgatory and ride the alpine slides and the Inferno mountain coaster. So many great hiking and driving trails just up the road from the cabin. We enjoyed sitting by the campfire at night roasting marshmallows, making s’mores and fellowship with Shawn, Sarah and their kids. Would definitely stay here again!

Peaceful, clean, cozy, homey, detailed oriented...amazing vacation.

Perfect clean. High quality sheets and towels (organic cotton).Well stocked kitchen. Very comfortable beds, spacious. 2nd floor is huge and with lots of space and nice views. Fast internet -I even worked in conferences on my computer while there. Like new or brand new furniture. Always shade and sun outside to enjoy. Big deck. Perfect to eat outside or relax. The best is the area of Vallecito. There are 4 main hiking trails just minutes from the cabin. One just 0.5mi. The views from the cabin are amazing. Walk in the night, in darkness, to see the stars like you have never seen! We did every night in our stay. Bring warm clothes for the night and summer ones for the day. Host and family live next to cabin. Host was one of the many highlights of our stay. He is so caring and interesting but he also respected our privacy. We felt we were the only ones around. lol. We enjoyed feeding the fish and ducks in the pond, learning how to row, sleeping in the hammocks a couple of times. Cabin offers many games and good books for guests stay. No mosquitoes. Fresh clean water you can drink from faucets. Good shower pressure but be patient calibrating the water temperature at first. Grill and fire pit provided. Very quiet area and total silence at night. Squirrels come every night around 5pm to eat their pine cones next to cabin. Many chipmunks and deers around. River with amazing mountain views next to the property pond. Barely any traffic in the road. Vallecito has 2 basic stores. (Big stores are 45 min drive. Not an issue if you organize yourself) One restaurant with valley views from big patio not far at all. Vallecito lake and areas around offer many corners to be away from the world, enjoy and exercise. We spent most of our time and days in Vallecito. We will be back. Downtown Bayfield is friendly and with several good restaurants to eat., too. We had no phone reception but we used google voice when needed. I'm sure I forget something. We just love the cabin and Vallecito so much. I hope you do, too.

Holiday Family Vacation

We stayed at the Miners Cabin and absolutely loved it! My boys loved this family friendly cabin that included comfortable bedding, board games, sleds to play in the snow, and so much more. If you are looking for a place to spend quality family time and unplug from your everyday busy life this cabin is a must! There's creek near by and also a lake area to explore.

Rustic indeed

If you are anywhere near 6 ft tall, there are several booby traps for your head. The light over the kitchen sink is someone's idea of a cute "pinterest" worthy design - but it was dangerous. The post stamp sized pond was a primary attraction when I chose this spotl. For the price, I expected more.

About the host

Hosted by Shawn R Ferrell

Host profile image
We are a family that loves traveling but we call the mountains our home base. We have lived in multiple countries and we always have come back to the Rocky Mountains. We like to garden, hike (forage), fish, and eat good food. On a good day, all of this can be accomplished right here in our backyard. We look forward to you staying here and getting to enjoy this piece of property as much as we do.

Why they chose this property

We bought this property in 2016 and have loved it so much that we want to share our experience of living here with others. Our guest cabin which we call the miner's cabin is a great cabin for a family vacation to get the opportunity to explore all that the beautiful Vallecito Valley has to offer. The national forest is only .1 miles from the house and there are multiple hiking trails in the area. As well as Vallecito Lake.

What makes this property unique

This property has lots to offer. The cabin is a quaint little rustic cabin that gives you that cozy feeling. Because the property is centrally located in Vallecito, we love to ride 4 wheeler up the middle mountain road and go on a picnic or go for evening bike rides with the kids around the neighborhood because it is easy riding on the gravel road and slow speed limits. There are 3 restaurants within a mile from the house and 2 general stores as well.
