About this property

Black Mountain Retreat: Newly Renovated Luxury, Game Room, VIEWS, Hot Tub

5000 sq ft of luxury perched high in the mountains outside of Asheville on 4 private acres. Superhost on Airbnb with over 40 5-Star reviews - Now available again on VRBO!

Built from hand-hewn logs & completely renovated in '21, this home has a fully equipped kitchen, dining for 14, fireplace, a 2-story great room, & hot tub for 7. Family-friendly amenities include a game room & custom baby gates for all 3 levels. All 5 bedrooms have long-range views & all 5 bathrooms have been luxuriously appointed. Enjoy 2 levels of expansive decks to soak in the view.

Some vacation rentals have partial views. Others have winter views when the leaves drop. We have all the views - all year round. Located in the area's premier gated community and bordering a nature preserve, we have the highest elevation in the community and face south - so you will enjoy both sunrise and sunset (and also have access to the strong internet signal in the mountains!)

Vibrantly designed with bold wallpaper, tile, stone, and furnishings to provide the perfect photographic backdrop for your luxury vacation. Every space in this property has been completely remodeled and all of the furniture is brand new (2021).

Our home was intended for people to gather and enjoy each other. The 2-story great room has floor-to-ceiling windows providing a view that exceeds 70 miles. Fine furnishings covered in plush velvet and saddle leather seat a large group comfortably to take in the view, watch a movie, or just enjoy some conversation by the fire. A Sonos sound system is ready for your music library.

The kitchen provides for all of your needs from the preparation of a simple snack to a full gourmet meal. The large island and lower cabinets are surfaced with uniquely finished leathered granite in keeping with the home's contemporary styling. With all new appliances this fully stocked kitchen, including a complete supply of seasonings and spices, lies ready for your culinary creations. A nine-foot solid oak dining table will support many sets of elbows and keep your group together during meal times. Don’t feel like cooking - you will find an array of great restaurants and bistros a short drive away in Black Mountain. Our concierge can also arrange a private chef.

A large loft overlooks the great room and is a semi-secluded space with a large screen TV for the kids or gamers in the crowd or it makes a perfect retreat for reading or conversation.

Our newly completed game room has plenty of space for the full-sized Brunswick billiards table and foosball table - both steps away from a wet bar. Three large sliding doors offer a panoramic view of the mountains and provide easy access to the lower patio.

Enjoy outdoor seating (Adirondak chairs not photographed) or dining on the spacious decks that run the length of the house or relax in our new hot tub (Aug '22) - possibly the best location to appreciate the magnificent view.

Our goal was to create a unique vacation destination that allows our guests to live in luxury while experiencing the unspoiled beauty of the mountains. Throughout most of the year, our nearest visible neighbor is a rooftop hidden in the mountainside below and yet you can feel safe knowing that you are tucked away in a gated community. The home also has an automatic backup generator that will keep all the important services running in the event of a power outage. We have secured the most highly regarded house cleaning agency in the region to stay with us step by step in our desire to offer only the highest level of home preparation and cleaning.

We are a family-owned and family-managed property. We love this home and we love our guests (as our reviews should assure you). We have created this environment with families in mind. Our home has custom baby gates (painted to match the kitchen cabinetry!) for all 3 levels that can be installed prior to your arrival. Our hot tub has a cover lock. We've got board and card games in the living room and, of course, our game room on the lower level. We also created several "nooks" throughout the house for separation. All 6 of our televisions are "smart" and 5 of them also have DirecTV. We made a concerted effort to make every inch of this property functional and enjoyable. That all being said, we also love coming without the kiddos for some adult rest and relaxation!
Other things to note
Like all mountain houses in this region, the drive to our home is steep (but not outrageously so). Unlike most properties, all of the roads that lead to our home are paved and maintained by our community homeowners association. You DO NOT need a 4x4 vehicle. In the exceedingly rare event of snow, our roads are promptly plowed and salted. Additionally, the homeowner's association will alert all residents to road conditions (which will be passed on to guests). In the event of a storm that knocks out power, our property has an automatic backup generator.

Black Mountain weekend getaway
This was the most beautiful VRBO property we have stayed in. Loved the views and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook a delicious 3-course meal. If you’re planning a trip to Asheville with a large group, then this is the place to stay!

Amazing House in Asheville
This house was absolutely amazing and so beautiful! I would strongly recommend this house to any group looking to be close to Asheville, but also have space and be up in the mountains. I stayed here with a group of 11 adults and there was plenty of space for everyone. The views are absolutely stunning, and you feel like you’re in a completely different world. Our group was looking for a combination of relaxation and fun and this house was the perfect spot to host both. We went into downtown Asheville a couple of times and found the easiest way to do it was by pre-scheduling taxis via Asheville Taxi Co. It was super easy, and you only needed to give an hour or so notice. Ian was an amazing host and extremely helpful in the entire process. The check-in and out process was so easy. Anyone traveling to Asheville would love this house!

Magnificent Mountain Home
Our family absolutely loved this magnificent home. Nestled halfway up a mountain, the views from virtually every room in the house are extraordinary and every time I walked out on the deck I was literally awestruck by what I was seeing. Lots of wonderful wildlife in the area including a variety of birds (among them what we think were wild turkeys) and deer. On our last full day there we got to see a beautiful black bear casually strolling along the road. The home itself is equivalent to a high-end resort, beautifully decorated, fully furnished and equipped with brand new appliances, TVs, a game room, strong internet connection, and everything else you need to have a fun and comfortable stay. The beds and bathrooms are well appointed and very comfortable. When we arrived the house was spotlessly clean and everything was in working order. The home is conveniently located in a gated community just a few miles from the center of Black Mountain and about 25 minutes from Asheville. Do keep in mind that being on a mountainside means a pretty steep roadway up to the home, but once you’ve driven it a couple of times, it’s not a huge deal. Our host, Ian, was great, super responsive, informative, and friendly. Overall we had a great and memorable week. This is a truly special home and one I would highly recommend.

About the host

The Black Mountain Retreat was purchase by 4 family members: Brian & Lorraine and their son, Adrian, and his husband, Ian. We purchased the property as a fun project and also as a meeting place for our extended family. Each of us brings a unique perspective to this property. Adrian is a real estate agent and design buff: he did the majority of the design work and renovation planning for the property (something he does in his job and on personal properties frequently.) Lorraine is an experienced gourmet cook (known for her baked goods!) and mother of 4: she hand-picked every item in the kitchen based on possible meal preps and all of the linens & towels throughout the house. Ian is a financial advisor: He's our logistics guy, making sure that Black Mountain Retreat is fully compliant with rules/regulations and that all of our vendors are paid, happy, and ready to serve our guests. Brian is a retired Physician who now spends his time building furniture and doing handiwork (and there was a LOT of handiwork involved in this project!): he's our glue guy, putting everyone else work together in a cohesive way so that the Black Mountain Retreat looks the way it does today. Additionally, Adrian & Brian provided much of the original artwork that hangs throughout the property.
