About this property

Spacious And Peaceful Retreat On Grand Traverse Bay! Private Beach Front

This large and gracious home is one of a kind: large enough to comfortably accommodate an extended family, family reunion, or retreats and small conferences with 10 bedrooms, 3 half baths, and 5 full baths. It is a beautiful property with a private beach, breathtaking views, gracious rooms and furnishings, and lots of amenities.

We have decided to make Omena House available to share with other families for special get together. A few summer weeks are still available. Omena House is a delightful venue in all four seasons. The two fireplaces and outdoor firepit promise to ease the Autumn chill for trips to enjoy fall color and winter snow play.

Village and Regional Charm

Located in the charming village of Omena, “the bend at the first knuckle of the little finger” of Michigan’s Leelanau peninsula between Northport and Suttons Bay, this spacious and well appointed house is situated directly overlooking Omena and Grand Traverse Bays, with a secluded private beach.

Enjoy wonderful days filled with sun, swimming, boating, beachcombing for Petoskey stones, bicycling or hiking on the many back roads and dedicated trails, and spending quality time with your family and friends. From the house you will experience shimmering sunrises over the water and woods each morning and sublime evenings. When you look up you can count stars and see the Milky Way.

Within easy reach are the attractions that define the very best “up north” experience: Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, charter fishing, casinos, excellent restaurants and bakeries (from pub fare to Zagat rated delights like Bleu and Martha’s Table). There are historical and cultural amenities including Interlochen Center for the Arts, amazing natural and human history, including the new tribal museum at Peshabestown, and several historic light houses and museums. And there are bounteous farmers markets, 20 wineries and cideries in Leelanau county alone. The Traverse City area sports 5 microbreweries, several distilleries, and there’s a “u-pick” flower garden just down the road.

You can walk to the quaint village of Omena and the Leelanau Cellars Winery and Tasting Room, gallery, general store, historical museum, post office, restaurant, and park with play equipment and wide sandy beach. The setting offers a sense of seclusion screened with trees and a vista onto protected conservancy woodlands and Omena Bay.

Omena House

This expansive 5,000 square foot home has bright and bold indoor spaces with large windows offering unobstructed views of the bay and conservancy lands. The home’s interior has been architect-updated with comfortable furnishings, colorful artwork, and two fireplaces. It features a convenient laundry room off the main kitchen. The large living room with it’s stone fireplace offers a perfect place to relax with a piano, large flatscreen TV, books and games for all ages.

The dining room faces the bay with tall window walls on three sides, and seats up to 20. The large kitchen includes 2 dishwashers and stone countertops, providing ample space for all the family to come together and create gourmet meals. It is fully equipped to allow a caterer to serve special occasions as well. The large adjoining deck includes a convenient gas grill, built in seating surrounding a sheltering old maple tree. There is a large glassed-in sun porch with white wicker furniture, paddle fans and a fabulous vista overlooking Omena Bay.

With 10 bedrooms, 3 half, and 5 full baths, it sleeps up to 22 people, perfect for a large or extended family. All the bedrooms are spacious with ample closets, and feature new mattresses. The first floor has 7 bedrooms with lovely views of the bay or woods. The second floor has a 3 bedrooms, one is a large and dramatic suite perfect to retreat from the bustle of activities downstairs and features a two compartment bath, Jacuzzi tub and dramatic window wall looking out at the treetops. There is a fully equipped galley kitchen, unique crows nest den with comfortable club chairs, balcony, private study, and spacious sitting room with a dramatic European fireplace, all overlooking Omena Bay.

The beach opens onto beautiful Omena Bay. The sandy cove of Omena Bay is inviting, with calm protected waters for swimming. In the evening enjoy the colors of the sunset and gather around a beach fire (there is a stone fire pit and seating on the beach.) Or, if you prefer, walk down the road to the nautical themed “Knot Just a Bar” restaurant, and enjoy a gourmet dinner outdoors watching the sun set and the moon rise. Omena offers a quaint country store with gourmet items and beer, wine and alcohol.

The fantastic “up north” experience does not end with summer. Enjoy spectacular foliage, hiking, biking, and winery tours while making this beautiful house your home base at off season rates. The fireplaces and fire pit offer a warm glow for crisp cool weather occasions. Also close by are cross country and downhill skiing to entice your winter fancy..

The perfect rental for a group of friends!

We rented Omena House for our wedding weekend and it was the perfect location for our wedding party to stay. They had the best time, and weeks later, are still talking about how much they loved their stay. Great location and the property owner was very easy to work with.

Wedding Stay

My wife and I had our wedding in Suttons Bay and rented this house to have the wedding party and a couple other guests stay at. It slept 22 of us comfortably and was much nicer than renting a block of hotel rooms. Highly recommend.

Sorority Sisters Retreat

We are sorority sisters from Olivet College - ages 75-81, who just enjoyed our 6th time in our home-away-from-home in the Omena House. We love the location, the comfort of the home and that there are so many rooms and bathrooms. We have tried other locations and always return to Omena - because we love it there. Thank you for the great house.

Girls Up North

We are a group of ladies from age 40 to 78. We have been getting together since 1997 the house was just right for the 17 of us. Lots of individual and group space. Having the beach was the best. We are all avid stone hunters. The home was well supplied with everything we needed. We want to rent it again next year.

Perfect for a group!

We had a women’s wine weekend and needed a place with enough beds for everyone. This house fit the bill. The house was exactly as pictured and everyone couldn’t stop saying how perfect the house was. I wouldn’t hesitate to book this house again!

Family Reunion

My husband and I stayed at Omena House with our adult children and their children...18 of us. The house was wonderful to accommodate all of us comfortably. We could all fit in the dining room for meals and there were lots of areas in the house for smaller groups to socialize. The kitchens and pantry were well stocked. Having 2 kitchens and 2 washer/dryers was a bonus!

Gathering Family

Our family from Arizona, Colorado and Michigan gathered together at the Omena House in early July and it was perfect. There was plenty of comfortable room for our group. We served every meal in the large kitchen and dining area. Evenings on the deck and by the fire pit, while games were played, made for some great memories. The private beach just steps away was perfect. The kids enjoyed searching for beautiful colored stones. We look forward to returning to Omena House!

The property is perfect for a large family gathering. Lots of room inside and out. Very nice and clean. Extremely well stocked. The fire pit was a bonus. You just need to bring a bathing suit and a few cloths. Our family loved it and wants to go back.

Sorority Sisters' Favorite Vacation Home

This was our second time at the Omena House for a gathering of Soronian Sorority sisters from Olivet College. We have been friends for over 50 years and have found the house and location to be ideal. The house is comfortable, clean and perfect for 14 of us. We will be booking for next year, too. Thank you.

The house was perfect for our family. We were a group of 14. We had a wonderful time. the house is absolutely lovely. Other than lack of air conditioning, it was perfect. There are lots of fans to help keep things cool enough.

Beautiful home and perfect location

Once again, we had a wonderful stay at this beautiful property. It did get a bit warm at night during our stay with no air conditioning, but the fans helped. Despite everyone’s best efforts, there was a pretty bad fruit fly infestation. We still enjoyed our stay and hope to return next year.

Best House for Sorority Sisters

This was our fifth time to stay in the Omena House. We love the size and comfort of the house - feels like our home away from home. Twelve of us stayed this year, but we have had as many as 14. It is our favorite gathering place for college friends/sorority sisters - we have been close for 60 years. Oh my!

Great place for a family getaway

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Omena house. We were there for a family vacation. The house was spacious with many areas to gather so you really never felt crowded. There were 22 of us and that included 6 children. The beach area was small but we really made the best of it and in the end it was perfect. The quaint towns around the house had many things to do also. Contacting the owner was easy and quick. The caretaker was very pleasant and had lots of stories and recomandations for things to do in the area. I would really recommend this property.

Amazing house

We gathered at Omena house for a family reunion. It has been difficult to find a place to house all of us where we can stay together and only for a couple nights. Who wants to stay with your extended family for a week…. 😉 The home was clean. There was plenty of space for everyone. Having two kitchens was so helpful. The yard was awesome for yard games and kids to run around. The beach was a quick walk from the house and beautiful. Everything we could have needed was in the house (the Coffee pot could be a little larger, but that was the only complaint!) Thank you for allowing us to stay. It was wonderful!!

Our Up North Trip: Omena Edition

Great! We are already planning to be there next year. The amount of bedrooms, bathrooms, and other areas fit our family needs. Because we had some cooler/rainy days the fireplace was especially a plus. The amount of games, puzzles, and books was appreciated. The kitchen had several amenities that made meal prep easier. The outdoor deck was great for our larger family. The view from the upstairs was better in person than any photo could do it justice. The only minor cleanliness issue (why we rated 4/5) was perhaps more attention needed on vacuuming/ sweeping. Overall we really enjoyed our week at the Omena House and are looking forward to making more memories there next year!

6/10 Okay

Nice, but only 2 full baths.

We enjoyed the house, but the advertised "8 baths" was misleading. It has 6 half bathrooms and only 2 showers (which we had to share among 20 people.) The kitchen was a little small for our large group. On the other hand, the house was spacious enough so that we could really spread out and have some quiet time when needed. The private beach assigned to this house was very small. Only 16 feet wide, it wasn't large enough to accomodate our large extended family, and the neighbor wasn't very willing to share beach space.

Family wedding in Northport

Omena House was exactly as described. Plenty of large areas for all to gather for eating and socializing. Our large family told stories and laughed a lot! The littles even found a Petosky stone at the beach access. Our wedding was in Northport. This was the perfect distance for the whole family to be together and close to the action. Bedrooms on the lower level all had names on the doors: joy, peace, love, etc. If these names were associated with the bedrooms in the listing, it would have helped us as we assigned rooms for this large group. Just a suggestion! We all loved Omena House and would definitely stay again if in the area. Thank you!

We Love Omena House!

We had an amazing time at the Omena house. Comfortably slept 19 people for our wedding weekend. We had 35 people over for a beautiful rehearsal dinner in the back yard and had plenty of tables and chairs. Ample room to socialize throughout the house and plenty of bathrooms for the large group. This house will have a special place in our heart forever!

Could not have asked for a more perfect location and home to gather our Michigan, Arizona and Colorado family. We enjoyed every inch of this well appointed house. The owners have not missed a thing. About the host

Hosted by Elizabeth Tuckermanty

Host profile image
The owners are Dale Manty and Elizabeth Tuckermanty. Dale grew up in Michigan and has brought the family “up north” for vacations every year since he left. Chirstmas vacations were filled with cross country skiing and winter fun and summers were filled with berry picking, hiking and swimming. Dale has family in the Upper Peninsula and down state as well. Omena House has been a perfect family reunion spot. Since acquiring Omena House in 2003 they are eager for other families to enjoy this very special house.

Why they chose this property

We chose to buy our vacation home in Omena because, we love the Grand Traverse Bay area and the “Up-North” experiences it brings us. We love floating in the beautiful lake water; canoeing quiet streams, sailing on the open bay, harvesting the fruit and vegetable bounty either from U-Pick farms or farmers’ markets. This beautiful area needs to be shared with other families looking for time to be together. We felt this is a welcoming place and should be shared.

What makes this property unique

When we are up in Omena we love to relax on the beach, walk to the “Knot-Just-A-Bar” restaurant, visit the wineries and even just drive around beautiful Leelanau peninsula. Often summer mornings we load up our pails and go to U-Pick farms and pick strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. The afternoon is taken freezing whole berries and making freezer jam to take home and bring the summer back all year long. We go to farmers’ markets and gather the best in local food and cook together as a family. We love driving around the lakes edge and going through the beautiful rural landscape inland from Omena. Most of all, we enjoy being together and playing games with our daughters and their husbands. We have been known to have a bonfire and s’more roasting on New Year’s Eve.
