Everyone kept saying the stay was like a hallmark movie. Tons of room, space for everyone. Game room was awesome, outdoor fire pit amazing, we even smoked a turkey on their pit boss pellet smoker. Deer were around all day as well as birds. The view from the master is priceless. Book don’t miss out on this place.
We went to visit my son at App state to celebrate his birthday and the first football game of the season. This place was awesome and comfortable. The siding table was perfect for or meals and playing family games at night!
The setting is beautiful! The house is very roomy! The game room is a huge plus!
Unfortunately the deck actually had feces on it and the trash can outside was full upon arrival!
The house was very spacious which worked great for our large group. There was also tons of outdoor space. The large decks made grilling and just relaxing in nature very comfortable. The koi pond was also fun to watch. Our older teenagers loved that it was close to town and restaurants but you still had lots of privacy.
Had a wonderful family visit in Boone to visit APP State and ski! Lots of space for all and nice weather so could play in the yard too. Hope to return some day! Thank you!
We were so excited to stay at this beautiful home for APP State’s Parents weekend. The day we were supposed to go, Hurricane Helene came through and devastated the area.
The homeowners, Carolyn and Tom, were very responsive and understanding that it wasn’t safe for us to go. I was so relieved to hear their home was okay. We do hope to visit their lovely home in the future. We continue to keep the people affected by Helene in our thoughts and prayers ❤️
My family and I had a phenomenal time at the property. Everything was well laid out, Tom and Carolyn were very responsive to a small issue that we had. Definitely looking forward to staying there again.
This home and owners were perfect.
The location and access could not be any better.
Very spacious and all the amenities you could ask for.
We WILL be booking again!!!
Our stay was wonderful. Recommend this house for anyone with a large family and large group
of children! Awesome game room and plenty of yard space to play! We would book this property again!
It was clean and managers were great with communication. You will love it!
What a gem! 7 adults and 7 kids and this house gave us all of the room we needed plus some. We got lucky and were able to experience snow! Having 3 acres to play was amazing! The property owners were very accommodating and pleasant. We will 100% be back to the Thorny Rose! It has now become my favorite vacation property! We don’t want to leave!
We SO enjoyed our stay! Location, cleanliness, well-stocked kitchen, lots of room to dine with 14 of our family. A private paradise but near many attractions in Boone, Blowing Rock, and surrounding areas. Don’t miss Stick Boys for baked goods, Mike’s Inland Seafood, Peddling Pig, Mast Stores, waterfalls and hiking trails or enjoy the front and side porches to relax. Plenty of places for kids and adults to relax, read, make s’mores, play disc golf, or run!
We will be back!
Our family had an awesome experience at this beautiful property. It felt very secluded and had so much to offer. It was super clean and well stocked with bedding, any kitchen supply you can think of and even games. It felt like home. There were plenty of beds and everyone had space to spread out and be comfortable. The picture windows in the master were breathtaking. Most of our time was in the large family room, HUGE kitchen table, the game room or exploring outside. The creek along the property was fun to explore, we found salamanders and crawfish and even saw several deer. The home is minutes from the sweet city of Boone and close to many activities. Great balance of rest and activities. Definitely a top tier vacation spot!!! Highly recommend.
Thanks to Tom and Carolyn for being such wonderful hosts! We enjoyed our stay with friends and family for our sons graduation from App State. I was worried after booking this property so late in the game, but it was everything we expected and more. Very close to town, yet you have the privacy and plenty of space to feel like your in the mountains. The stream running outside, beside the property, the diversity in terrain, the pond, the trees, everything was perfect. Tom also offered to go out of his way to return some left items. ❤️ Thank you
Very nice space for a large group. The house is a bit of a maze in the downstairs area. Decor is a combination of very attractive and needing some attention. But everything worked properly and was comfortable. Only have comfortable seating for 5 in the tv area but a really large kitchen table was nice and our group of 10 could all be seated.
It was wonderful!! So much room for our whole extended family! Lots of comfortable beds! Super quiet neighborhood! Lots of bathrooms throughout! No one ever waited on a bathroom! House was stocked with everything you could possibly want or need! Lots of great outdoor space for all to roam and play. A fabulous creek running through, a hill for kid sledding, and loads of outdoor balcony space! And a game room filled with lots of things to entertain the kiddos, when we weren't out teaching the kids to ski. They did great and all decided it was our best trip ever!!
The pictures for this house did not do it justice. This house sits upon one of the most picturesque sceneries. The soothing sounds of the creek and the chirping of the birds would calm even the mist stressed person. House is equipped with every accommodation you can imagine. Multiple bathrooms for a large family and enough dining space to have everyone sit and eat every meal together. The grounds were out of a dream. The time we spent here as a family bonding will never be forgotten. As our kids ate getting older you cannot put s price on these memories.
The good: Easy access, incredible outdoor property. Kitchen spacious and plenty of seating at the dinner table. Master is ridiculous large with amazing views. Kids bunk area is tucked away downstairs, we barely knew kids were there! (plus or minus depends). Amazing hot water and pressure in the showers. Parking under a carport a bonus for sure. Regular coffee and Keurig a plus. Place was clean and well stocked.
The not so good: As many have said, family room seating was not enough. 5 fit on couches at best but uncomfortably close. For a group of 12 that felt like less ability to hang and bond in the evenings. Half the people we at the kitchen table instead of family room. Master was huge, other 2 queen rooms significantly smaller so make sure if you have multiple couples you work that out. One queen has an en suite bathroom the other uses small hallway full bath. Office is huge but you have to walk thru it to get to master fyi.
Owners please add a roku to all tv's (only queen room and kids have it), the LG tv system in other rooms was difficult to navigate and you can't get good channels or apps. Realized too late that you do recycle. Maybe add an outside bin specific for that with the note and we would have been thrilled to do so.
Thanks again for an overall fantastic stay.
We had a great thanksgiving week at the property. The upstairs layout gave us plenty of place to hang out and enjoy. The well stocked kitchen was fabulous for preparing thanksgiving dinner and the huge table made it easy to gather around.
We loved having the office space and appreciated how much easier it made staying connected. The kids really enjoyed the game area downstairs and the bunk room (with its own TV). The property was close to everything but also felt like you were in your own world.
You know how you see pictures online and you know it won't REALLY look like that? NOT THIS HOUSE! This house is nothing short of amazing - we loved the kitchen and that dining table it stunning. Football on in the living room and projected to the screen downstairs, we had college kids and Dad's cheering for App State and playing ping pong and shuffle board....upstairs a great spread of food and plenty of room to cheer for App and enjoy the views from all the windows. The kitchen is very well appointed (and the dishwasher is quiet!), the entire house was spotless, the beds are comfortable and there were plenty of towels. The exterior is absolutely because, even with a bit of rain. We'll be back for Parent's Weekend next year - already planning the menu!!
We had a wonderful family stay in Boone visiting our oldest son. Our family ranged in age from 3-73 and there was space, activities, and beds for all. I especially loved having meals at the huge dining table.
We enjoyed the area with hikes, waterfalls, go-karts, rock hunting, farmer’s market, the Children’s Playhouse, and more. My favorite was just sitting on the large porch and hearing the birds and watching deer.
The kitchen was spacious and stocked with seasonings and most any kind of cookware you can imagine.
I would definitely stay here again

About the host

My boyfriend and I took a Fall Foliage Camping trip and fell in love with this area - especially after having several people we met along the way say how wonderful the area was as well.
Why they chose this property
The land of the property is what drew us in at first site. The creek and beautiful trees, the seclusion of the area. We did not know until after we purchased it how unique the land is in that it is gradually sloped and mostly usable all year including during the winter months. Most properties have significant slopes. Once walking into the house, the picture windows and closeness to the creek were amazing. We keep the windows open at night so that we can hear the sound of the river. Everything is close! The Boone Brewery, Wineries, great shopping, 3 ski mountains, great hiking trails, white water rafting (Walmart and Lowes even). We are trying out VRBO to let others enjoy the area while we are not able to be here but we plan to retire here in the near future.
What makes this property unique
The water directly from the tap is what water should taste like. It is better than any bottle water I can buy! We always drive a 5-gal jug with us when we leave to go somewhere else. River, Hiking in my own backyard, soon to have producing apple trees!
