My husband and I enjoyed our stay very much. Our daughter and her friends were camped at Camp Lotus and it was just a 2 minute drive away! We were comfortable and happy non-campers! Cheryl

Absolutely perfect!

The unit was exactly as presented and very clean. The pets were super friendly and, as a pet owner, it was extremely special to have that little connection to an animal while away. Had a great time at Marcos listening to music and the river didn’t disappoint! A great find!

Absolutely perfect

This sweet family runs the river rafting trips for Camp Lotus which is a short walk away. I sat in the river's rejuvenating waters every evening. The unit has everything for comfort including two friendly dogs and a cat who visit often. A family of 4 would be very comfortable in the spacious room. What a pleasure to have a full refrigerator and functional kitchen. I enjoyed sunset's rosy glow on the porch's vista of golden hillsides clumped with dark oaks, and would have loved the starry night except that the moon was one of the biggest and brightest of the year during my stay. I heard songbirds, distant roosters in the morning, cattle lowing, in the evening and an occasional woodpeckers tapping on the wall. The family composts and recycles, and there is a beautiful feeling of connection to Mother Earth there. I enjoyed the happy chatter of rafters packing out some mornings and packing in some evenings. and the friendly, easy, accepting atmosphere. I can't wait to return.

It was okay, but didn't meet expectations.

The unit definitely needed more cleaning before we arrived. The bathroom shower was the worst offender. There were cobwebs and spiders in the kitchen and across the table. Unfortunately there were hot water issues which an adult can handle but children do not understand and it was exhausting to shower them through their tears. The unit was about 90° inside when we arrived and impossible to sleep. The owners ask that you not run the AC during the day, which was impossible with my 24/7 morning sickness. We might have come at at really bad time so I don't want to give 3 stars for benefit of the doubt, so I am graciously giving 4. Adults could handle the uncomfortable stay but not the children, we had to make other accommodations for them. It has great potential but definitely needs TLC.

Fantastic home base!

My daughter and I stayed in this studio for the weekend — it was incredibly clean, comfortable, and convenient. Our hosts were accessible but not at all intrusive. It was a perfect spot to enjoy a weekend of hiking and rafting. I’d highly recommend!

Lovely studio

Overall great experience and communication with host. Be aware there is a cute little cat that will likely be on the balcony calling for you early in the morning and anytime you’re out there. Not a problem for me personally but one guest I was allergic to cats and the kitty kept trying to get inside under the magnetic screen door, so we had to keep the door closed. Great location! Short walk to a campground on the river where you can get a day pass to access the river.. not SUP friendly but rafter friendly!

About the host

Host profile image
We are a family of five with a love for whitewater, outdoor adventure, and travel. We operate ARTA River Trips’ operation on the South Fork of the American River in the summer months, and teach (middle and high school) the rest of the year.

Why they chose this property

Living in such a wonderful vacation spot, visits from friends and family abound. 4th graders across CA visit the Coloma/Lotus area to see where gold was discovered and learn the history of the area at the Marshall Gold Discovery State Park. Whitewater enthusiasts from beginners to advanced descend on Lotus year-round for private kayaking and rafting adventures, and from April-October to raft with commercial outfitters. The American River Conservancy’s dedicated efforts are evident in the miles of outstanding mountain biking, hiking, running and horse riding trails and the Wakamatsu Ranch - the historic site of the oldest Japanese-American settlement in California. Our studio is a few hundred yards from beautiful Camp Lotus on the shore of the South Fork of the American River, where we launch our rafting trips, and which provides quick access to the world-famous Barking Dog Rapid - a favorite standing-wave hangout for kayakers, surfers, river-boarders and body-surfers year-round. Multiple trail adventures are within a ten-minute drive, and the area is a popular destination for avid, hill-loving road bikers. Coloma/Lotus offers multiple dining experiences and live entertainment most nights of the summer. Henningsen Lotus Park is 1.3 miles away and offers a huge grassy field home to official and unofficial soccer, ultimate, and volleyball games and provides extensive river access, baseball fields, and a play structure for children. Wine taste at world-class wineries. Multiple grocery stores, a movie theatre, and myriad shopping and dining areas are 20 -30 minutes away - close enough for convenience and far enough that solitude and quiet are not at risk. Apple Hill is 25 min away. In the winter, Sierra at Tahoe ski area is a 75 minute drive, and South Lake Tahoe is 90 minutes away. Guests from abroad have stayed in our studio and accessed Yosemite (3 hours), San Francisco (2.5 hrs), Sacramento (55 min), and many other central and northern CA attractions.

What makes this property unique

Our studio in the heart of Lotus offers quick river and trail access, as well as the option of relaxation and solitude without having to leave creature comforts far behind. Adventure awaits just outside, but inside is a calm, comfortable oasis. Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, we are surrounded by history, a wilderness paradise, and astounding beauty.
