For the logs in the great room of Mountain View, a five-bedroom house that can sleep 12 and tucked above the Snake River south of Wilson, owners wanted trees with a visible story: lightning strikes, knots, scars, burls. The builder obliged and picked out each log individually. While these log beams—many of them more than one foot in diameter—give Mountain View’s entrance and cathedral-ceilinged great room Western character, it also speaks to the level of detail in the design and construction of this exquisite mountain home. But with the views of the Tetons this home has, the design and craftsmanship must be extraordinary to be noticed.
Walking into the soaring foyer, a two-story, stacked-stone wood-burning fireplace and a wall of windows greet you. Through the windows you can see the entirety of the Teton Range. (Architect Eliot Goss sited the house to make the most of the property’s views.) The Tetons are also visible from the kitchen—prep for dinner while looking out at the Grand Teton!—the junior master suite, the master suite, the dining table, patios off the great room and the junior master, and the master suite’s private balcony. The three bedrooms that do not have Teton views look out on mature pine forest (often frequented by moose and elk).
Throughout the home’s public and private spaces is custom Western-style furniture. Interior designer Cheryl Gallinger worked with artisans to create bespoke steel chandeliers, log headboards, an octagonal dining table, and modern takes on Molesworth-inspired chaise lounges and armchairs. The dining table, whose shape is inspired by the lines of the bannister of the home’s grand staircase, is particularly fabulous: a lodgepole pine frame surrounds a white, hand-tooled leather center.
The great room is open to this dining area and a professional grade kitchen, which has marble counters and, in addition to the 8-person dining table, a more intimate seating area in front of a gas-burning fireplace. Off a hallway on the opposite side of the great room than the kitchen is the junior master suite, which has a king-size bed, natural gas fireplace, walk-in closet, expansive bathroom, sauna, and a deep soaking tub beneath windows that frame the Tetons.
Up the grand staircase, which is a work of art—each tread has a live-edge and is half-a-log thick—is the master suite and two other bedroom suites. One bedroom suite has a queen size bed; the other has two twin beds.
The master suite fills the eastern wing of the upper level and has stunning views of the Tetons, Snake River, and the Gros Ventre Mountains. (Its deep-soaking tub has the same expansive views as the sleeping area.)
About five miles south of Wilson, this Western mountain home is private but still only a 10-minute drive to the local coffee shop, restaurants, outdoor store, and Hungry Jack’s General Store. The amenities of Teton Village and downtown Jackson are about a 25-minute drive.
