About this property

Waterfront Getaway on Green Lake – Relax in the Year Round Beauty of the North

Lakefront Memories Await: swim, fish, canoe, explore, eat, sleep, repeat (3 bedroom, 2 bath)

Relax. Unwind. Breathe. Play. It’s your turn to enjoy lake life! Welcome to our lakefront cottage, our home away from home. The Elegant Loon is located on a quiet peninsula close to both the action and amenities of Traverse City and the natural beauty of Sleeping Bear Dunes and Leelanau County. Our family-oriented cottage is open year-round and has a big backyard that leads to private frontage on Green Lake – a nearly 2,000 acre all-sports lake and home to Interlochen Center for the Arts. In the water, splash, explore by canoe or SUPs, boat, and fish. From the dock, take in the peaceful surroundings and maybe even catch a concert at the Center for the Arts on a warm summer night. After a day of exploring and relaxing in your new getaway, gather around the fire pit and wish upon some shooting stars. Laughter. Memories. Happiness.

Looking for a fall getaway? Enjoy the beautiful fall foliage, take walks down the tree lined peninsula, visit local farms for fresh-off-the-vine pumpkins and produce, sip coffee on the deck on a crisp morning and roast marshmallows during a cozy evening at the fire pit.

Is winter your style? Downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snow shoeing and tubing are all within a short drive and ice fishing is only a few steps away – then head inside to warm up by the fire and reflect on another perfect day.

– the COTTAGE –

The cottage is 1400 sq. ft., with an open floorplan, a few stairs, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and updated décor that shows our state pride and love of the lake. Whenever our finances allow, we choose to buy MI and to buy USA, so our décor is minimal, but meaningful.

– the PROPERTY –

When you enter the water, you’ll find a shallow depth for families and adults who want to float, splash, and wade. A canoe and stand up paddle boards (SUP's) are provided for you to explore the cove and lake. We have life vests for all ages and sizes, from infants to adults. For the anglers in your life, fishing on Green Lake is fantastic, with strong populations of pike, bass (largemouth, smallmouth, and rock), pan fish, and yellow perch. Lake trout are stocked annually and Green Lake is regulated as a Type B Tout Lake, open to year-round fishing. On shore, there’s a large deck, gas grill, fire pit, grassy yard, and lawn games for the whole family to enjoy.

GREEN LAKE: yours to explore and enjoy

WATER PRESSURE and SEPTIC SYSTEM: The Penn Loch Colony community as with most houses on Green Lake are not hooked up to city water or city sewer systems. While the water pressure is perfectly fine when running one thing, we would highly recommend NOT attempting to shower when the washing machine is running. It could lead to a cold, soapy experience. Please only flush toilet paper and do not pour grease/oil down the kitchen sink. Do NOT bring anything heavy over the cement septic system on the side of the house!

The house has central air but bedroom 2 and bedroom 3 do not have dedicated vents.

The piano is around 100 years old and it still works! Since electricity wasn’t quite in vogue though when it was made, it is powered by good old-fashioned foot power. So if anyone feels like playing or is curious just pump the piano to provide power with the foot pedals and go to town!

Wonderful lake experience!

This home had everything we could have possibly wanted. Extremely well equipped kitchen, lots of outdoor activities for family fun. Indoor games for a rainy day kept the kids entertained. Perfect size home for our group, nice calm lake for paddleboarding, close to lots of interesting activities. Exceeded our expectations.

Great place and easy host

We had a really nice stay. Very clean, comfy, well stocked and it had thoughtful additions like s’more makings and firewood. The only improvements would be warmer lighting in the overhead fixtures or more lamps. We couldn’t figure out the fireplace but didn’t reach out to the host. In the scheme of things, those are insignificant details.

Wonderful home on Green Lake!

This home is just as described! We travel a lot and use vrbo for most of it and I would definitely come back to this home. The kitchen is well stocked to cook, home is clean and everything is in working order. Also the views are amazing! If you’re an Interlochen parent or going to events there the location can’t be beat! Brett the host is very responsive and so nice! We will be back!

Michigan vaca

This was the best place we stayed so far in our Michigan travels. Being on the water was beautiful. Even though we had a full day and it was rainy the house was cozy and close to other destinations. We would definitely come back.

Interlochen Elegant Loon

The Elegant Loon was delightful! 5 stars across the board. Cleanest VRBO we've ever stayed at, accuracy of the listing is 100%. The location gave us easy access to Traverse City, wine tasting on the nearby Peninsulas, Frankfort, Leland, etc.. All while having a quiet place on the lake to relax at and enjoy a nice fire each evening (Smore makings were a very nice touch). The Michigania decorations are all top notch and the kitchen is very well equipped with Kitchen Aid utensils, Henckel knives and a wide variety of Michigan themed glassware. We'd definitely rent this house again if we are looking to spend some time "Up North".

Perfect friend’s getaway

We felt so at peace in this house. It was great for a group of three friends that wanted to escape city life and just be. Right in the lake, with the right amenities, personable touches throughout. Very grateful for the free fire wood, the canoe and the life vests. We really enjoyed our time is this great home.

Nice and relaxing

The cottage was well maintained and clean. Everything was as advertised. Our only issue was the lake water was so high that's overran the dock making it difficult to access and dock our boat. Otherwise a quiet restful week.

Excellent vacation home all around!

The home was perfect for our family (me, wife, daughter, and in-laws). There was plenty of space for all 5 of us. Being right on Green lake made it so easy to enjoy the water with the included canoe and paddle boards. We also drove to Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, and the Leelanau peninsula. The home was very clean and incredibly well stocked. The owner really put a lot of thought into making sure visitors have everything they need from quality cookware, nice towels, games/books for kids, and much more. The TV/cable and wifi worked well throughout the week with zero issues. I even did a little work remotely while here and had no problems. The beds were very comfortable. This home is in a nice quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors. Whenever we went out walking/running, everyone always waived or said hello. This was truly perfect for our up north vacation this summer!

Perfect lake house!

Cozy, clean place right on the lake. The house had lots of space and was stocked with everything we needed - beach towels, cookware, yard games, board games, and more! You can walk right into the water from the yard. We used the canoe and paddle boards that were provided and could tie up our boat at the dock all week. Highly recommend!

About the host

Hosted by Brett

Host profile image
My wife and I both grew up in Traverse City and have strong roots in area. We moved away for college and our careers, but always felt most at home back where it all began. This is the place where we come together as a family, slow down, relax, breathe, and build memories to last a lifetime.

Why they chose this property

Pennloch Colony is a serene, tree-lined private peninsula close to all of the amenities and festivals of Traverse City and the natural beauty of Leelanau County. The Elegant Loon is located on the leeward side of the peninsula near a tranquil cove with forest views across the lake and ample, diverse wildlife. We have young children and consider the Elegant Loon an ideal retreat for the entire family to enjoy.

What makes this property unique

We live in the home part-time, so the beds, linens, towels, kitchen gear, games, canoe, SUP's, grill, outdoor gear, decor, and furniture are continually updated.
