About this property

Private Family Retreat, Lake Access, XC Ski- IN/OUT

Our family retreat is set on a hilltop with sweeping views of farmland, distant mountains and Caspian Lake. Inside, guests will enjoy a large open-concept kitchen and dining area, a comfy family room with a wood-burning stove, books, games, puzzles, television, sound system, and a Steinway grand piano. Amenities include access to the beautiful & private Lodge Beach, where guests will find a pristine lake with clear water, a sandy beach, boats, and a floating dock to swim to and dive from.

The walk from the house to the Lodge, and then to the Lodge Beach is about 15 beautiful minutes, but driving is also an option. If going as a group it's nice to carpool down when possible in order to save space at the beach parking lot. A bike ride around the lake is about 7 miles of hilly dirt roads, and a drive to Willey's General Store will take 5 minutes. A good rule of thumb is that all kinds of hiking, jogging, walking or bike riding can be done right from the house, but if you require supplies etc., you will need to drive. The driveway at the house can accommodate 4+ cars comfortably.

The house faces south and is flooded with light year-round! Much of the land is in "Current Use", meaning it is preserved as farmland and is maintained by a local farmer who uses it to grow hay for his cows. There is a neighboring summer house in an adjacent lot but our retreat is very private, peaceful, and otherwise secluded. All-in-all, this is a dream retreat for families who love the NorthEast Kingdom in general and Greensboro in particular.

GREAT LOCATION

We enjoyed very much the location and the lake facilities. Too bad that it was raining part of the week but it didn't bother the children. I would recommend to give more and better attention to cleanliness and freshness of the products in the cupboard.

Wonderful house

We loved our stay at this beautiful and rich-with-family-history home. The views of Caspian Lake were beautiful and the quiet was exactly what we needed. We had everything we needed and Virginia was easy to communicate with; very accommodating to any concerns we had. We hope to come back again.

Perfect spot to enjoy Caspian Lake

We have rented many houses around Caspian Lake / Greensboro and this spot is right at the top of our list. There are plenty of bedrooms for a larger group and the grounds are spectacular. While not directly on the lake, you have the best of all worlds with a gorgeous view of the lake (including still being able to hear the loons at night) and access to the beach and boats of the Highland Lodge, a short ride or nice walk away. Inside the house, the kitchen was very well stocked with a nice large table for group meals. We also used the outdoor grill to cook. The family room includes a piano and a great wood stove to take the chill off at night (the house has heating which we didn’t need). Bedding was quite comfortable. Communication with Virginia was easy and quick and we’ve already told her we are coming back next year. Thanks for a great week!

Spacious and Cozy

Our family had a wonderful stay to see the fall colors. Our children loved playing in the spacious home and exploring the nearby lake. The views of the forest and lake are amazing. A great place to get away and be close to nature.

Wonderful spot for our family gathering!

Lovely property overlooking lake Caspian. We loved the large yard for the children to run around and play. Also, thoroughly enjoyed the beach and use of the boats! Home accommodated all of us very well!

Awesome stay!

We had 4 adults and 7 children in the house for a week and were comfortable and happy! The hosts were very responsive and kind. We spent a few days at Stowe and Jay's Peak which were both about an hours drive away. The rest of the time we sledded on the property, made snow angels and built snow forts in the foot of snow that arrived for our visit! We had a bonfire in the awesome fire pit overlooking the amazing view of Caspian Lake and surrounding mountains. The kitchen was well stocked for a large party. Also, the neighbors at Highland Lodge were wonderful as we enjoyed a delicious dinner there one evening. Overall, a wonderful stay!!!

Wonderful week.

The house was a perfect fit for our group of 6 adults and 7 small kids. We spent our time kayaking and paddle boarding on lake caspian, roasting marshmallows and looking at the stars. Having hill farmstead, Ben and Jerry’s, wonderful general stores and great farm stands near by made it easy to eat and drink well! We had a great time and will hopefully be back!

We used this house as a home base for a wedding and it was amazing! It is both cozy and spacious and has great kitchen, dining and bedrooms. We loved the privacy, the views of the lake and the access to the water at the super-cool Highland Lodge beach and boathouse. Another major plus is the Lodge itself, which we used for overflow accommodations and lots of fine dining. Our week at this house was truly charmed. Even our local guests raved about the location! We will be back!

Great, well-equipped house with a fantastic sense of space - peace and quiet with loads to do, especially with young kids - would definitely recommend the house to anyone if you want to get away from it all in an area of true beauty .....

About the host

This has been our family vacation home since it was built by Julian Scholl on the top of the field behind the Highland Lodge in 1976. It has now passed down to the next generation of family to mantain and enjoy. I live in Putney, Vermont and manage it.

Why they chose this property

Our family has been vacationing in Greensboro since the summer of 1959. We love the lake and the town and often stayed at the Highland Lodge. My father dreamed of having his own place to gather the family and was thrilled when Dave Smith, owner of the Lodge,
was willing to sell him the property along with permanent beach rights.

What makes this property unique

Access to the best beach on the lake, with privacy and beautiful views.
Steinway grand piano in the living room.
Beautiful winter cross country ski trails maintained by the Craftsbury Nordic Center go right up the hill near the house.
