About this property

Sandhills Country Getaway - Fishing, Star Gazing, Hiking

The Country Cabin located on the Double R Guest Ranch or RR Guest Ranch, is tucked into a wooded area that lies at the base of the 110+ year old pine trees on the hills nearest to the Home Valley Lake. We are located in the heart of the Sandhills of Nebraska. The Double R is the perfect setting for a quiet get away or a family reunion. Bring your fishing poles and see what fish you can catch in the lake located on the ranch. If you enjoy hiking, bird watching, star gazing or just the quietness of the country, the Double R is the place for you!

Enjoy the wrap-around deck on the upper floor, play in the green space, explore the wooded area, walk to the nearby lake or hike the hills!

This Nebraska Country Cabin is furnished with your comfort and relaxation in mind.

It sleeps 7 with a queen, double and twin bed downstairs (sleeping area is a shared space with a wall that extends 3/4 of the room - no door) and a double sleeper sofa upstairs.

To keep with the rustic/camping feel, the owners built a bath house 15-20 steps from the Country Cabin. The bath house is complete with shower, stool, sink and washing machine.

Spectacular Vistas
It exceeded our high expectations. The hosts went above and beyond to make sure we had everything that we needed. It’s located on a lake on a cattle ranch and was exactly what we were looking for. If there was a rating greater than five stars, we would give it.

Exceeds Expectations
It was exactly what I expected/desired based on description and pictures, but it's hard to fully appreciate the location until you are present - I loved it. The host (Mary Jo) was proactive, helpful and responsive, I'll be back!!

Quiet place away in the Sandhills
The Sandhills were beautiful, and the cabin is out in the midst of that beauty. It is quiet without the sounds of traffic or even airplanes, but the birds were singing. The wildflowers were in bloom, which I didn't expect, and I hiked around in the hills and around the lakes. There were nice articles to explain the history of the property and the buildings. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate to see the stars as I had hoped. The cabin was clean and pleasant. It was smaller than I imagined from the pictures, and the sleeping area is all connected so it doesn't provide the privacy of separate rooms. All of that was fine for me since I was alone. The bath house is separate from the cabin so you get the experience of when they used to have outhouses.

Hidden Gem
I loved this location. We stayed here while on a fishing trip at Merritt Reservoir. If you want a peaceful stay with nothing to bother you, then this is that location. You can see forever at night (as long as there are no clouds). The owners & property manager were easy to work with. I gave it 5 stars for location, but I think those that desire a more social event would not like the drive to get there. I recommend staying here and plan to again.

Amazing weekend getaway
This was a perfect place to unplug and enjoy nature. The start gazing was AMAZING! Lots of wildlife, we saw deer, turkeys and a turtle. The cabin is super cozy and beds were very comfortable. Property manager always responded and reached out to make sure we found our way. We will definitely be returning! I wish I would have booked a few more days.

This place is incredible!
This place is everything we could’ve hoped for! From the double rainbow that appeared almost upon arrival, to the flock of white pelicans, to the still-standing 1908 sod house on the property, this place is utterly breathtaking! My only regret is that we didn’t book it for longer! — (but next time, we will!) In addition to the property being gorgeous, The house itself is very cute & comfortable. Mary Jo has thought of everything, AND, when covid delayed our plans, she worked with us to reschedule. We couldn’t have asked for a better over-all experience!

Incredible!
The Double R was beautiful. We had an amazing time. We stayed 4 nights during our grouse hunt, and it was perfect for what we were looking for while we were at the cabin. Clean. View. Country living. Fishing. Rich History. And the best Land Lords! Mary Joe is great. We wanted for nothing. Grill had propane, bathroom was fully stalked, and kitchen had all utensils necessary (with coffee pot and toaster). She is prompt and happy to answer questions or change bookings. She met us at midnight to take us to the house. We didn’t want to put her out, but happy she helped. Lol. In the dark with no service, just trust her when she insists. Highly recommend.

Great remote location
The property is beautiful. We enjoyed a very quiet weekend in this remote cabin located in the Sandhills. There were activities to pass the time, and all the amenities to keep us comfortable during our stay. I highly recommend this place if you are looking to get away from civilisation for a bit to enjoy scenic countryside.

Tony and Mary Jo would like to thank you for choosing The Double R as part of your travel plans!

A little bit about us: Tony grew up in Hayes Center Nebraska on a farm where outdoor activities, like fishing and hunting, were an important part of his free time. He then attended college at Chadron State where he met Mary Jo.

Mary Jo grew up a couple miles down the valley from the Double R! She met Tony at Chadron and they were married in 1996. They moved back to the Mullen/Whitman area in 2003 and just last year they moved back to the ranch where Mary Jo grew up.

They work with her parents and are excited to be back “home”. The opportunity presented itself for Tony and Mary Jo to lease the property where the Double R is located. They are very excited to show the Sandhills of Nebraska to you!

We pray that your time on the Double R is just what you were looking for - or even better!!

- Tony and Mary Jo Walker
