About this property

Historic Maine Summer Cottage with private beach, 8BR, 3BA

The Frederick Law Olmsted Summer Home, also known as Felsted, is a historic house located on the west side of Deer Isle, Maine. It was designed by well-known architect William Ralph Emerson and built in 1896. It was originally the summer home of the landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (designer of Central Park in NY). The house is a high-quality example of Shingle style architecture and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Among its many incredible features is that Mr. Emerson placed the house so that you can see the sunset over the ocean and distant islands every day of the year. It is a unique and beautiful property, with stunning views to North Haven, the Camden Hills, and the Eagle Island lighthouse. There are over 600 feet of shoreline along East Penobscot Bay, with Pink granite ledges, and a private beach. The covered porch sits high over the ocean and is the ideal spot to sit peacefully with morning coffee, and to watch the sunset in the evenings.

Felsted has been a long-time family home. Your hosts live nearby, and have many years of experience in hospitality and property management. They will do everything they can to make sure you have a wonderful stay. Please read this entire description before requesting a reservation. Thank you!

Felsted was a hotel between about 1925 and 1940, and it has been the setting for two movies: Mel Gibson’s 1993 movie “Man Without a Face”, and the 2003 movie “Finding Home”. Felsted has also been featured in numerous books on architecture, including on the cover of Bret Morgan’s recent book: “Summer Houses by the Sea”. It is a wonderful spot for extended family gatherings, and a great place to explore!

In total, there are 8 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. There are 6 bedrooms on the second floor - two kings, one queen, one bunk bed (double below, twin above), and two twins. One of the 2nd floor twin bedrooms has a trundle bed. There are also two full bathrooms on the 2nd floor. (1 tub/shower combination, and 1 stall shower), and a laundry room. There are two bedrooms on the first floor – one king and one twin with trundle bed, as well as a full bath (1 tub/shower combination).

On the first floor you will find a large eat-in kitchen with gas stove, dishwasher and microwave. There is an elegant wood-paneled living room, dining room and sitting room all overlooking the ocean.

Felsted sits on over 4 acres, and has a private beach with beach chairs, hammock, and a picnic table. It is the perfect spot to launch your kayaks, or enjoy swimming and beach combing.

Felsted is only a short drive to Stonington, the lobster capital of Maine. You will find everything you need at the property to prepare lobster feasts.

Felsted is close to many wonderful activities available on Deer Isle, including Aragosta at Goose Cove, recently named “Best Waterfront Restaurant in Maine” by DownEast Magazine. The Barred Island hiking trail is within walking distance of the house, and there are many other trails on Deer Isle managed by the Island Heritage Trust. Isle au Haut is a beautiful island off the coast of Stonington. It is home to portions of Acadia National Park, and is accessible by ferry from Stonington. In addition, Deer Isle offers many shops, galleries, 44 North Coffee, a farmer’s market, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Nervous Nellie’s, and the Deer Isle Granite Museum.

Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are close enough for day trips, whale watches and more!

Please read this paragraph before you request a reservation. In general, Felsted is available to rent from Saturday to Saturday during the summer months but there is some flexibility in the dates. Some reservations are Sunday to Sunday. During other times of year we have more flexibility in the rental schedule. Feel free to write and ask about renting in fall or spring. Felsted is a much loved and lived-in family home. It is 128 years old this year. It is a magnificent historic home, but it does have flaws. We work hard to keep up with the work, but there are some cracks in the old plaster and there are always areas that need some paint. The garage and boat house on the property are not part of the rental. There is internet, but no cable TV and no landline phone. If you have any questions, please write and we are happy to answer!

Gorgeous historic property

Felsted is a beauty. Our group of friends—many of us writers, architects, arts workers—loved our week on Deer Isle. The house is a great base from which to explore the area or alternatively to relax on the back porch overlooking the water. It’s an unbelievably well sited home and exactly as pictured. Yes, it shows its age here and there but everything worked well for our needs. We look forward to returning.

Beautiful spot

The views can’t be beat. The house does need some upkeep, as the listing says, but it was a great spot for our extended family to gather. The kids loved the beach, adults hiked nearby, and we saw seals and bald eagles from the deck.

Family birthday celebration

We had children aged 3-12 and all the things for them to do made the stay great. Books, the chess table, games, and outdoor toys gave them fun things to do. For the adults, the porch was the favorite spot. One addition, kayaks, would have really made it perfect. But we loved the time here.

Felsted

This is an amazing property with a lovely house with a wonderful history. The views are amazing and the location is quiet and safe and staying here was incredibly relaxing. This is truly a unique place - the architecture is spectacular and the micro-environment is perfect. Acadia is an easy day trip and the local towns and hikes are great as well. This is a perfect place for a family reunion or just a quiet getaway to recharge your batteries. The stove is old but works beautifully - it is a fun kitchen in which to cook. The beds are great. The rooms are large most have amazing views. Truly, can't recommend it enough.

Fantastic visit. Felsted deserves10 stars!

We have stayed at Felsted before, and we returned with family and guests. The house easily accommodated everyone from age 6 to 86. The first-floor bedroom and bath were perfect for grandparents. There was a rain storm during our visit and we enjoyed sitting on the large covered deck and watching the ocean and the waves during the storm. The wildlife is amazing. We saw seals, porpoises, eagles, osprey, ducks, gulls and sea birds. Around the property we saw rabbits, deer, foxes, monarch butterflies and many kinds of birds, including the large pileated woodpecker. The kids loved the rocky shore, the beach, and the forest around the house. They spent hours playing and exploring. Thank you again to our great hosts. If we could give more than 5 stars we would! Felsted is an amazing property and we hope to return next year.

A Magical Week

Felsted is more than a vacation house. It’s where the man responsible for the creation of Central Park spent his summers, and where you can feel the presence of history when staying there. The view from the porch never gets old, and you can sit there for hours watching the lobster boats and listening to the waves. If you feel like leaving the property, and not every one in our group did, it’s a ten minute walk from the house to the Barred Island Preserve trail which winds through the forest to the island, about a forty minute hike. Although several events and markets have not reopened due to Covid, the Stonington farmers market offered produce, crafts and many friendly local artisans on Friday morning. Lastly, Meredith could not have been more responsive and helpful if questions arose. She has created a special place for people looking for a memorable coastal Maine experience. We look forward to returning next year.

The Best of Maine!

Absolutely wonderful. It doesn’t get any better than this. An incredible experience and we can’t wait to return! Felsted (the historic name of this home) is a quiet, private, beautiful place to spend time. The deck overlooking the ocean is magical. Pictures and words don’t do it justice. We spent hours relaxing on the deck and watching the breathtaking views. Sitting on the deck at sunset became a blissfully relaxing daily ritual. We saw schooners and sailboats, lobster boats, eagles, seals, and spectacular sunsets. The house itself is a delightful and fascinating place. Although it is not perfect, its charm, rich history and character more than make up for its quirks. Felsted is furnished beautifully, with lots of original art on the walls. The master bedroom has windows on three sides and stunning views. All the beds are newer and very comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you need and we loved the vintage restaurant stove. Right outside the kitchen door there is a BBQ and an area to cook lobster. What a bonus to have a private beach right at the house! We enjoyed spending time at the picnic table and hammock overlooking the water. It was an awesome place to launch our kayaks. The hosts were very helpful and responsive. They gave us wonderful recommendations on every Maine topic and helped us with everything from kayak rentals to restaurants, shopping, hiking trails and more. We can’t thank them enough for sharing their fantastic home. We definitely didn’t want to leave and we hope to return soon.
