## Neighborhood
The Riquier district is a district of Nice located in the south-eastern part of the city, north of the port district, upstream from the Paillon, the river torrent that passes through the city. It is bordered by rue Barla to the south, Mont Alban to the east, the Paillon (covered) to the west.
The essentials of the Riquier district
A district that has become central to the metropolis of Nice, Riquier now has a residential vocation. Its frame is made up of workers' buildings built in the 1920s, contemporary residences, and a few remaining buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Palais de l'Esplanade located on the Place de l'Armée du Rhin, Place Arson, its arcades and pétanque courts, the old buildings on Rue Arson on the port side, several palaces on Rue Barla, the the Torrini house and the Antoine palace on rue Leotardi, or the Bella Nizza palace on boulevard Antoine-Risso. Very commercial, the Riquier district is home to many national and international brands, and in particular the large shopping complex on Boulevard Delfino Nice TLN. A green district, it has pleasant landscaped squares such as Place Arson, Place des Cigalusa, and the green spaces of Nice TLN. A stone's throw from Place Garibaldi, the district is also very close to Nice Acropolis, the contemporary art museum and the Paillon green belt.
The origins of the Riquier district
The district bears the name of a wealthy family from Nice who owned their land in the Middle Ages. For a long time, the territory of the district remained planted with orchards and vegetable gardens. Close to the city ramparts, the sector then attracted craftsmen with various trades, including coopers and blacksmiths, then small industries, breweries and urban transport depots (coaches, horse-drawn trams, then coaches). The development of the district was made thanks to the destruction of the citadel and the ramparts of the city by Louis XIV. The city's urbanization projects in the 18th and 19th centuries led to the layout of new roads outside the old walled city, as well as the digging of the port: another factor in the settlement of the eastern sector of Nice. The Riquier district is located north of the old town, just above the port district, between boulevard Risso to the west and the Corniche André de Joly to the east
