About this property

Lazy M Mountain Cabin- A Cozy Mountain Getaway. No Cleaning Fee

Our cabin is nestled in the majestic mountain terrain of Gallatin National Forest and is just twelve miles from Gardiner, a year round gateway to Yellowstone National Park. It is the perfect distance to be able to enjoy Yellowstone but be able to get away from the crowds. From The Lazy M Yellowstone National Park is a scenic 20-25 minute drive. Our cabin is 30 minutes from Chico Hot Springs, an hour from Livingston, and hour and a half from Bozeman Airport.

The cabin is adjacent to Cinnabar Creek, which is great for small trout fishing, and has a magnificent porch with Adirondack chairs to enjoy the beautiful mountain view. If you want to just sit back and relax you can spend hours sitting on the porch next to the creek drinking coffee or wine while reading one of our many books or just enjoying the peaceful environment. Watch deer, elk, and big horn sheep in the meadow out the front door, along the creek or on the nearby bluffs. Bears have also been seen from the porch and along the road. If you are really lucky you may even see a mountain lion. During the evening hours make sure to keep an ear open for howling wolves.

There is a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, pull out sleeper sofa in main cabin and a Tulikivi Fireplace.

This is a mountain cabin in the heart of Montana’s wilderness. While it has most of the amenities of home, it is still a rustic cabin. We have books, travel guides and games in the cabin. There is no TV or phone in the cabin. WiFi is satellite and therefore not extremely reliable; if you absolutely need internet during every moment of your stay you should look elsewhere. We did just upgrade to Starlink so internet should be faster and more reliable but it is still satellite so could be affected by weather (May 2023).
We allow 2 night stays during off-season and to fill during summer. There is a $75 cleaning fee for 2 night rentals.

Not quite as pictured
The cabin is clean, well stocked and everything works. However, the picture is not an accurate depiction of the property, which made the property more difficult to locate. The good thing is that there is a nice deck on the left side of the house, the bad thing is that there are elevated fuel tanks on the right side of the house. Also, due to the height of the grass, the boulders that protect the lateral field are not easily visible and constrict the turnaround space quite a bit. If you have a large vehicle, you will need to back in from the road. Be aware, there is no cell coverage (Verizon), the road to the cabin is quite washboardy, which is not the fault of the owners. The sound of the creek is relaxing and the lack of internet and tv contributes to the overall Montana experience.

Super cozy - Loved it!
The check-in and communication with the owner was great! Loved how cozy and quaint it was and had enough amenities to make it so we had what we needed. Internet was a bit choppy but expected. Be aware of the long gravel road in poor condition. Would totally stay again!!

Cabin was exactly as advertised. It was rustic but had everything there to make it a pleasant stay. The large stream running beside the cabin was a bonus It was located about 20 minutes off the highway, but that made it more secluded and peaceful. We spent most of our time in the park, but it would be a great place just to stay there and relax in peace.

Lazy M
We loved the cabin so much. Driving to the location was a little intimidating but so worth it. It was so quiet and peaceful. The kitchen had everything we needed and more. I loved sitting on the front porch. It was a good location to enter Yellowstone through the north entrance. Would definitely return again.

This place is a gem of a find.
This was our second time staying at the Lazy M and it was incredible and beautiful. Very private and Quiet, unlike the rush you would get staying at a hotel or resort. Once you stay, you will see why this place is special!

Perfect little cabin
This was our third stay this winter in this gem of a cabin. It is the perfect base for us to visit Yellowstone and watch wolves and other wildlife. Comfortable, simple, and peaceful. We and our dogs feel at home here when we return from a day in the park.

Yellowstone Trip
The cabin was accurately described in the VRBO. It is down a gravel road for 3 or 4 miles, some potholes along the way, but a very accessible road by car. We left before daylight most mornings and returned after dark but the one evening we got back before dark the front porch was very peaceful. I guess the only surprise was that there is not a sink in the bathroom so teeth brushing and hand washing will take place in the kitchen sink. As described in the reviews, there are a lot of rules but nothing absurd and mainly common sense. I expect every one of those rules are a result of previous guest's ignorance or lack of concern for someone else's property. If it's ever just my wife and I again in that "neck of the woods" and we need a place to stay that would be our first choice. Andy & Dora, Texas P.S. My Dad was a crew chief over a Pueblo Indian fire crew during the 1988 Yellowstone fire. We actually so video of him in a documentary in Grant Village. Lot's of good reading in the cabin but didn't have time to enjoy it so we have ordered the "Decade of the Wolf" and "Yellowston's Red Summer". Dad's 85th BDay is Oct. 2 so we got the fire book for him!

Stay at Lazy M
Cabin is very well stocked and view from the porch is very nice. The cabin is fine for two people for a long weekend. The pull out couch isn't the best. The bathroom doesn't have a sink. all washing, shaving and teeth brushing is in kitchen sink. The four mile dirt road leading to the cabin is Terrible! It's very narrow, rutted very badly and much of it is awful washboard. The driveway is narrow and lined with large rocks hidden by the waist high grass. I couldn't turn my full size pick up around in the driveway. I had to back out or back in. The road is a deal breaker for me if I was to return to Yellowstone. Loran was great to deal with.

The lazy M was a great home base for our trip to Yellowstone! It’s very secluded down a gravel road, so lots of peace and quiet. We saw tons of elk in the area. We loved sitting outside on the deck and listening to the creek. Everything was just as described, and Laurel was great with responding promptly and answering all of our questions!

About the host

Hosted by Emily Sherman, Paul & Laurel Koller

Host profile image
Paul and Emily purchased our property in 1994 after looking for a number of years. Emily's great grandfather had owned a general store next to the Crow Indian reservation in the 1890's. Her grandmother grew up in Anaconda, Montana. We have always enjoyed the landscape and dry mountain air of Montana. Paul and Emily had vacationed for many years in Yellowstone National Park before we purchased the LazyM. Day to day operation of the LazyM is done by Paul and Emily's daughter Laurel

Why they chose this property

We choose this location because of it's proximity to Yellowstone Park and the beautiful scenery of Paradise Valley while allowing us quiet seclusion when needed. We enjoy hiking, fishing and both downhill and cross country skiing.

What makes this property unique

Sitting on the porch or deck you have a wonderful view of Cinnabar mountain. At night you can sleep with the sound of the creek flowing by and enjoy the fresh mountain air. Our cabin was built in the 1950's and we have tried to preserve it's original charm. We have white pine floors in the main cabin and rustic kitchen cabinets.
