Holiday weekend mountain visit
Elk Cabin is one of two recently built cabins (the other is Bear Cabin) that sit side by side. Since it appears this cabin was just built, it was in great condition and extremely clean. The thing to be aware of is that this cabin is very small (around 500 square feet) and sparsely furnished. Both cabins sit side by side on a gravel lot inside a chain link fence off a highway a few miles outside Maggie Valley. If you are looking for a plush secluded cabin on a wooded mountain lot with scenic mountain views, this is not the cabin for you. If you are looking for a simple, clean, reasonably priced cabin that is a conveniently located place to spend the night, this cabin is fine. We experienced two problems with the cabin. The first was the shower. It is very small (cruise ship size) and the water heater is evidently small. We had four people in the cabin. There was enough hot water for two quick showers before it ran out. We adapted and went to two morning and two evening showers and that worked, but this could be an issue for some. The other issue was the front door locks. There are two locks on the front door, one is an electronic deadbolt lock with a keyhole and the other is just a keyhole lock in the door knob. When we left the first time I locked the electronic lock, assuming the key I had would fit the keyhole in the electronic lock. It did not and we were locked out. I was able to reach the owner about a half hour later and get the electronic lock code, but this could also be an issue. Owner needs to provide the code or at least instructions for the locks up front. As I said, this cabin is new. May be just one of the bugs that needs to be worked out for the future. guests. Overall a good, clean, reasonably priced stay, just be aware that this cabin is very plain. I would equate it to a nice hotel room.
