About this property

Magical 3 bedroom villa with private pool and beach access

Let us welcome you to the tranquil Caribbean; idyllic beaches, tropical jungle, great food and lovely people. Our beautiful home is set up to allow our guests to relax and enjoy their beautiful surroundings with a private saline pool and a private walkway to the beach.

Casa Pilon was lovingly built in 2011 from a single native Pilon tree from the mountains of Costa Rica. This Balinesian inspired villa, has been constructed with a meticulous attention to detail. Nestled in the surrounding jungle, Casa Pilon offers a beautiful private saline pool inspired by the dark sands of Playa Negra, luxuriant landscaping, and an open-air design. The center of the house is a massive open-air dining and entertaining area, including a comfortable lounge, full-size billiards table, and dining for 8. Grill dinner on the gas grill, play a game of pool, or relax on the built-in daybeds. The lounge is surrounded by lush grass, perfect for lawn games or soaking up some sun. There are 3 separate bedroom suites, each with an outdoor porch or deck. A massage/hammock platform adjacent to the pool offers an alternative to sunbathing by the pool. 2 minutes from the house there is a private walkway to the magical Playa Negra beaches.

The lounge and dining room flow into a fully equipped gourmet kitchen offering a four-burner commercial grade gas range oven, dishwasher, mixer, refrigerator and freezer, blender, toaster, coffee pot and icemaker. On the other side of the kitchen is a comfortable sofa to relax and stream movies (Netflix, Prime Video etc) with a half bath right next to it.

Two bedrooms privately located in separate wings of the main house offer en-suite bathrooms, walk-in closets, and king-sized beds. The master bathroom has a large double vanity, dressing area, separate shower, and an in-ground outdoor jacuzzi for unwinding in style or relaxing to the jungle sounds by candlelight. For guests wanting a bit more privacy, the third en-suite king-sized bedroom is located in a poolside bungalow.

We offer many added amenities to ensure a stress free experience.

Stunning open air stay

The property was fantastic for our group of friends to enjoy the Caribbean coast. We loved how we could enjoy the common areas as a group and then have our separate spaces. A short walk to the black sand beach and short drive to the more populated white sand beaches with restaurants and drinks worked out very well for us.

Beautiful property

Wow, this property is amazing. The caretaker, Juan, was super friendly and helpful. The pool was nice and the rooms were great and spacious. The outdoor area had a grill, seating area and pool table. Plus, the bikes and green house are a nice touch. We would definitely stay here again!

Wonderful stay in a paradise

Everything about this property was absolutely amazing. Easy to navigate to , excellent distance from town & shops. Would definitely stay again. I felt like a true king of the jungle in a luxury jungle home during my stay here. Sarah was an absolutely amazing host and did an excellent job to make us feel right at home. It was a hard place to leave that is for sure. Highly recommend this amazing home.

Phenomenal home and awesome hosts!

This home was beautiful beyond words and we truly enjoyed our stay here. It was the perfect size for our group and being on the property felt like we were in our own little jungle oasis! Sarah and James were wonderful hosts and went above and beyond to ensure that we were comfortable. In addition to all that the home itself offered, Puerto Veijo was a truly charming beach town with a wonderful vibe. We would not hesitate to stay here again! We are grateful for everything.

AWESOME TRIP

Casa Pilon is a must in PV. We had 6 adults and had more than enough room. The pool was a definite plus. We hired David one night and that is a MUST!!! The best meal ever. Communication was above and beyond. Juan was such a pleasure to talk to. Grounds are immaculate and so taken care of. I would recommend Casa Pilon to anyone. Thank you!!

The most perfect home in Puerto Viejo

This home is more stunning than the pictures can show. A true paradise that you don’t actually have to leave during your stay! The home is equipped with lounge spaces, games and amenities to make you feel like the most pampered guest. Chef David’s food was the best we had in PV. Short walks to the quiet black sand beach and excursions nearby made this trip quite memorable. Thank you Sarah and Juan!

Excellent Stay

Three couples enjoyed our stay this February. Each room was private and unique. Beds were comfortable. We loved the outside space including the pool table and comfy outside furniture. The owner Kenyi was easy to work with and very responsive. The caretaker Juan was great and we were even provided breakfast the first day! Juan even updated the bicycles for us during our stay. Great restaurants within walking distance. Beautiful beaches and bike trail on the beach. Close to Puerta Viejo but not too close. The pool was refreshing. We enjoyed everything about our stay. Love the Caribbean side of Costa Rica!

Paradise

We stayed here for 6 days in mid February and enjoyed every minute. Pictures were accurate as well as description of the property. Location was within walking distance to plays negra and a quick drive of only a few minutes to grocery stores and downtown Puerto Viejo. The pool was wonderful, bedrooms large and comfortable. Left bananas out one night and did have a visitor that came to eat them but for us this added to the entertainment and to the feel of truly being a part of nature. Loved the breakfast that was included one morning as well as the bowl of fruit that was given to us. Would definitely recommend casa kenia!

AMAZING house, like being in paradise. Perfect vacation. Never wanted to leave.

The house, grounds and pool are even better than the pictures! Everything about this property is simply stunning. From the moment we arrived, we were in paradise. Juan and Evelyn were great. They made sure we had everything we needed and helped in any way they could. The welcome breakfast was delicious. The kitchen had everything needed for us to cook many of our meals. The house was so beautiful, it made us not want to leave. But when we did, the towns we explored, Puerto Viejo, Cocles and Manzanilla were so amazing. Beautiful beaches, good food and gracious people. We had the most wonderful vacation and could not have been happier with our choice to stay here. We hope to come back. Pure paradise. Pura vida.

Casa Pilon Was A Dreamy Island In The Jungle

We had an incredible 29-night stay at Casa Pilon in February of 2024. This would be our second time spending a month in Costa Rica with two other couples, friends from Minneapolis. The previous year we stayed on the Pacific side in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area. Although it was rainier on this side, we enjoyed Puerto Viejo more. Fewer people and tourists offered a more authentic Costa Rican experience. We found Casa Pilon allowed us to relish our stay regardless of the weather. The house has a plethora of activities, always something to keep us busy and plenty of cozy areas to sit, As most of us were “working nomads”.The kitchen was stocked too.We also appreciated the refrigerators working ice machine. We found the homeowners, Sarah and James, were great hosts and responded quickly to our needs. The home is equiped with safes for our electronics too. The caretaker, Juan and the housekeeper Rosa did a great job. The nearby beach Playa Negra is beautiful and when the tide allows, you can walk to Puerto Viejo in about 25-30 minutes, avoiding the busy street. We highly recommend using Chef Davd. We had two great meals, A full Red Snapper and Ahi grade Tuna. Restaurants we recomended, Banana Azul,Bread and Chocolate, Café Viejo, Mopri , Chilie Rojo and Stashu Con Fusion. Tours to try: Talamanca Chocolate Making Class, White Water Rafting through Exploradores. Jaguar Rescue Center and the Yorkin One Day Tour. We would love to stay there again! This is a house to experience.

Slip back into Eden…

We have stayed in many beautiful places, but this home is the first time we felt we had snuck into the Garden of Eden and had it all to ourselves. The home is well appointed; we wanted for nothing. The beds are comfy and king sized, the fans are plentiful, and everything is just as you would have done it yourself. The jetted tub in the “secret garden” off the primary suite is heavenly. The housekeeper is unobtrusive and thorough. Our linens were regularly refreshed, and everything was neat as a pin. You can also choose to you have your laundry done. Juan, the grounds keeper, made us feel safe and was available to answer any questions. The hosts were wildly helpful – restaurant recommendations on point! They know an army of folks to help make your Costa Rica dreams come true. Massage on property – no problem. Pizza delivered – they know who to call. Private shuttle from the airport – they have a guy. You but need to ask, and anything you need or want, the host have a solution. Don’t skip the Banana Azul beach club which is feet away from the front door. We spent many quality hours lounging and sipping. But, for us, the true luxury was the private pool and the hours we spent watching iguanas in the trees above us, orchid swaying in the breeze, and giant butterflies drift through the backyard while floating in utter bliss.

Nothing short of fantastic.

Kenyi, thank you so much. You place made our family vacation absolutely wonderful. Our flight was delayed getting there. The airline lost my luggage and our drive down to Puerto Viejo was long due to terrible traffic. The minute we walked into your house our issues just melted away like they never existed. I read other reviews that said the pictures do not show it justice and they are absolutely right. The place is amazing. As I am from Africa, the first thing I fell in love with was the African decor and architecture. The open air feel is truly special. You feel like your so in touch with nature. You wake up in the morning to the sounds of varies species of birds and Howler monkeys in the distance. Your caretaker Juan was super helpful and made sure he was available 24/7 to make you feel secure. The access to the beach was great. The house however was so nice it made it hard to leave. The pool was well used while we were there. There is so much to do in the area that we left the house everyday for a potion of the day but all of us were so thrilled to come home to our oasis for the week. We had pool tournaments every night. The pool table was a nice touch and kept us well entertained in the evening. All in all your house was a huge success and you Kenyi were a wonderful host. Thank you so much for sharing your piece of paradise with us. All the best and can't wait to be back. Peter

Great house but may not be for everyone. Please read

I will leave all the beneficial things for you to read on others' reviews. Here is a list of things that may be important to you. I list these things solely for your education so you may knowing chose this house/area of CR. I'm tech savvy. I did multiple speed tests, using local and foreign sites, different days and times, weather conditions, rebooted, powered down everyone else's devices, etc. The best down I got was .76 Mbps and the best up I got was .98. For us, this was a huge issue. It's so humid, nothing dries. The way the house was built, if it had AC, there'd be a serious mold problem. It's a jungle. They got around the mold by being open air. Getting into bed at night is like getting into wet sheets. Sleeping is hard when it's 80 degrees and dripping wet. The provided fans don't do anything. Open air house and jungle mean full penetration by nature. Pro tip: At all times leave everything in your room closed. The mosquito netting around your bed, the doors to the deck, everything. It's the jungle and go to the bathroom for 2 minutes and what crawls in and hides under the bed only to sneak out during the night and having your wife's nails dig into you like Freddie Kruger at 4AM during a rum induced haze is super no fun. You're off the beaten path. What does that mean? The house is located on a dirt road about 1/2 mile long. It can be extremely muddy walking/biking/driving. You're in a little neighborhood. Those locals have packs of dogs and roosters and parties........and random long conversations right on the other side of the fence (remember open air construction) at 3:42 AM. That's about 2 hours after the local packs of dogs have their nightly fights. The howler monkeys start around 4:30AM. The roosters around 5:30AM. Without the drone of an AC, or maintaining common decency and not putting on a sound app at full volume, it's next to impossible to get a good night's sleep. Back to being off the beaten path. Like most places in Central America, toilet paper goes into the trash can and NOT in the toilet. 4 women put me and by buddy on work detail as just 1 single square is enough to stop it up. Ya know how I mentioned it's a jungle? I cut one of those small CR watermelons in half and sat on the step with a spoon to eat it. Before I could finish it, the entirety of the jungle had queued up wanting in on my sandia. Final pro tip: EVERYTHING goes into the fridge at night. Even empty beer cans. Trust us.

Great Gem!

Our group of 4 had an amazing time on our first trip to Costa Rica! From this property it’s a very easy walk to what seems like, miles of black sand beaches. We enjoyed watching the Howler Monkeys on our walks, toucans flying around when we were utilizing the pool and watching all the lizards and frogs running around the property. One thing I was worried about before getting to the property was that it was listed as “open air”. While it is true that it is open air, it did have a netting type building material to keep the larger critters out! Nowhere has air conditioning in PV-and it was really non issue. I would however make sure to use bug spray. I was the only one in the group that was bitten, but the mosquitoes loved me. The home has just about all of the tools you’ll need. As an owner of a vacation rental myself, I can be a little picky, but we had everything we needed and more. The WiFi was more than adequate for doing some remote work for a few small bits of time. We didn’t experience any loud neighbors (other than the Howler Monkeys in the evenings at times, which was amazing). One of the bedrooms does hear vehicles passing, but this wasn’t a problem for our group. Pro tip: There’s a small hotel a block away, on the beach called, Banana Azul. Happy hour is 10am-5pm, 2 for 1! As long as you order a drink they will let you use the padded lounge chairs on the beach even though you’re not staying with them. Thank you for the hospitality. We can’t wait to visit again.

Simply gorgeous

The whole family loved our stay at Villa Pilon. Sarah made every step of the process so straightforward before and during our trip with every detail we requested met with a friendly supportive approach. The house itself is wonderful. The children loved the pool table, various board games and of course the pool. All the spaces are super comfortable and tastefully decorated. Juan and his mother looked after our daily needs cleaning the property and giving helpful suggestions for surf lesson and day trips. The beaches in the surrounding area are stunning. Our favourite was Cocles. We hired chef David for several lunches and dinners and his cooking was wonderful adapting to the requests of the family with a smile. He’s a lovely kind man with lots of stories to tell. Overall we cannot fault any aspect of this vacation. Thank you Sarah. We will be back…….❤️❤️

The Best Vacation Rental Ever!!

If you are looking to stay in the Puerto Viejo area, this home is the place to stay...a paradise itself. The home is open air, spacious, immaculate and super comfortable. The gardens that surround the home are lush and beautiful...with all kinds of wildlife around...exotic birds, lizards, colorful frogs, and you can hear howler monkeys daily. Sarah, the proprietor, was super helpful and gave us amazing suggestions. She helped us with transfers, she booked a chef for us one night (amazing), a massage (also great) and great restaurant recs. It rained often during our week there but that just gave us more time lounging at this incredible property. Highly recommend this property.!! Thanks Sarah and Jim for your kind hospitality.

Playa Negra Rainforest Retreat

We had a lovely stay here with our family, long-awaited after twice postponing our trip due to the pandemic. We found the original owner, Kenyi, and the new owners. Sarah and Jim, to be very accommodating and helpful. The house is stunning and ties in beautifully with the surroundings. The pictures do not fully do it justice. The third bedroom is separate from the main house, by the pool, and my teenage daughter quickly claimed it, enjoying a bit of separation from the rest of us. We spent much of our time when at the house in the outer sitting area, which is truly special. The home is open air, and we had no trouble keeping it cool enough for sleep; it is good to keep the bedroom doors closed at night to avoid bugs and other visitors. There was occasional noise from neighbours and the road that runs the length of the property, but that is part of being located within an active community. The property is ideally located for quick access to the stunning beaches, national parks, and villages in the area. Juan and Rosa (the care-taker and housekeeper) do an excellent job keeping an eye on things and maintaining the property. They made our stay extra special, as did David, the chef. We used his services for 3 nights while we were there, and his meals were amazing.

Paradies

Jungle Paradise

This property is absolutely amazing. Everything is so meticulously thought out! From the decor to the living areas (yes, multiple) to the layout design. There's room for ample privacy for multiple couples or family members. The main area is perfectly equipped for good times in the Casa- with plenty of games, a pool and even a billiards table. Not to mention it's right in the middle of the yard/ jungle so you'll be fully immersed in the action. We found it difficult to choose a night in the town vs. the casa. Sarah (the owner) is very communicative and supremely helpful with everything she knows and even has a private chef and masseuse at hand. Neither of which you'll regret booking! The caretaker, Juan is always around to assist in anything you need and is super kind. We felt very secure with a large automatic gate entrance (room to park a car). You are a short walk away from Banana Azul, the beach, and a convenient store. The only thing is it's a bit of bike ride to town, more than you'd want to walk. But we enjoyed the jungle more than our lack of proximity. Our group is already planning a trip back!

Dream tropical Christmas

We (two couples) had the perfect week enjoying arguably the best holiday home we've ever experienced. The property itself is stunning and has actually given us all plans to own/build something like it in the future! We probably didn't spend as long as we wanted there nor made the most of it, but more evenings than not were enjoyed at the house in the end, staying in, cooking and entertaining ourselves with the two forms of pool on offer. The owner, Sarah, was extremely attentive and helpful in organising our stay. The housekeeper, Juan, is a great and very willing guy, on hand if and when you need him. We are quite a self sufficient group but we know he would go above and beyond to cater for whatever you need. Sarah and Juan organised some amazing fresh lobster and fish for our arrival so we could make ourselves the ideal tropical christmas dinner. The walk to the vibrant town of Puerto Viejo is easily manageable but there are plenty of tuktuks around for quicker journeys. Lots of great bars, restaurants and live music to enjoy. Wildlife abounds in the neighbourhood and in the garden itself - resident green and black poison dart frogs and daily/ nightly visits of hummingbirds, parrots, flycatchers, tanagers, howler monkeys raccoons and olingos. We suggest taking a morning/evening/night walk 'around the block' to the forested and empty plots inland - plenty of sloths, howler monkeys, frogs, toucans, parrots and other birds to find. The only slight downside is it's actually quite a noisy neighbourhood. It may be due to the Christmas period, but lots of trucks pass the road adjacent to the property and there's a nearby/neighbouring 'party house', blaring out music til 4am every other night. Ear plugs are therefore a must for light sleepers. Tbh, we planned to wear them anyway to counter the dawn howler monkey chorus ;). This, however, didn't tarnish the stay at all and Casa Pilon genuinely is close to perfect! The house is an amazing base to explore the southern Caribbean coast of the country and we really do intend to return one day.

A few days in the Caribbean

We had know idea of what to expect when arriving to Puerto Viejo. Residencia Kenia was Beautiful and truly unique. The Caribbean town of Puerto Viejo and Playa Negra is a tropical paradise with a big party scene. However, we had a few rough nights. The house has no AC and can be very hot, with damp/wet bed sheets and pillows from the heat and humidity. Also, lots and lots of bugs/mosquitos. Should have brought bug spray. The biggest issue for us was the noise from the surrounding neighbors. We were woken up multiple times throughout the night from cars and people partying late into the night. On the last night we were woken up at 4:30am from one of the loudest “booms” I’ve ever heard. (And no it wasn’t thunder or lightning, that was going on all night as well) Louder than a shotgun, or a tire blowing, no doubt. Kinda sketch and freaky but I wasn’t too worried because of the great security at Residencia Kenia. Overall a good experience and a very beautiful and unique house.

beautiful house with lush garden

We spend 5 nights over new year at Kenyis house and loved it. It is located close to the beach and a short drive to town. The house itself is beautifully furnished- like in the pictures- and has a wonderful garden. We loved every moment of our stay.

Why they chose this property

We love to travel and explore new places. On one of our recent adventures we fell in love with the casual vibe and exotic beauty of Puerto Veijo. The clear, warm Carribean waters and wild, natural beaches, the lush jungle teaming with incredible biodiversity. Not to mention the friendly local community and the fantastic food pushed us to secure our own piece of paradise.

What makes this property unique

This property offers total privacy, with beautiful grounds. The bedroom suites are located at opposite ends with an oversized open air living room in the center. It has everything you need to relax and unwind. Just a 20 minute walk to the town of Puerto Veijo
