About this property

Stunning Historic Home - No crowds. Beach Access 120 yds from the front porch

This home was built in 1895 and is listed on the National Historic Register. Property is a half acre and the front porch overlooks 2/3 of it. We are on the north side of Tybee, away from the commercial area , crowds and traffic. For families this is far and away the most desirable part of the island. The beach is 120 yards from the front of the house and Jaycee Park is right behind the house. There is a house on the left and one on the right that are both 56 feet from our house - you will not be looking out the window at a wall of the house beside you. The park has walking trails, Pickleball Court, Frisbee Golf and a brand new Kidde Park. This is a great house for 2 families or a generational family reunion. This is where our best reviews and repeat renters come from. The home was originally occupied by the base doctor of Fort Screven. When the base was deactivated it was purchased by one of the previous mayors of Savannah, my parents purchased it from his estate in the 60’s.

The beautifully remodeled full kitchen has granite countertops, high end appliances (including two dishwashers, an oversized refrigerator, a five burner Bosch induction stove, and a stereo system with a Bluetooth hookup). There is seating for 14-16 people at the dining room table. The den/library houses a flat screened TV. A marvelous open porch graces three sides of this home with approximately 2000 square feet of outdoor living area and includes rocking chairs and two picnic tables. The first floor features one bedroom (originally the 'Stryker's Quarters'), which is located just off the kitchen. There is a queen size bed in this bedroom, a separate air conditioner, claw tub bath, and its own entrance. There is additional bathroom with a shower on the first floor. There are three bedrooms and three full baths on the second floor, which also has about 1000 square feet of open porches. Each of the bedrooms on the second floor is abundantly sized, has tall ceilings, and a working transom above the door. All bedrooms, as well as the kitchen, living room, and downstairs hallway, have ceiling fans. The third floor has two bedrooms and one bath: one bedroom has a double and queen beds, the other has a queen, a double, and a twin bed. This house was originally built as a 3 bedroom house with an additional bedroom on the first floor. The two bedroom on the third floor were added later. The best “fit” for this house is couples on the 2nd floor and older children and young adults in the other bedrooms - the third floor is really not suitable for young children and the 1st floor bedroom is too remote . This grand home is for the exclusive use of its guests. The beach is 120 yards from the front door through a quiet (no traffic) neighborhood. Also there is no nearby public beach access parking making this one of the most least occupied sections of beach on the island. This was one of the houses considered for the movie “The Big Chill”. We have been told by guest that it has that “vibe “ to it, however local ordinance does not allow parties and events such as weddings and graduation parties (parties/events are limited to the renters).

The Fort Screven and North Beach area offers fascinating military history, beautiful dunes, long beaches, a nice park, and an eclectic community of homes that is fun to observe on foot or bike. The live oaks, natural dune with sea oats and other dune plants and animals, along with a view of Tybee Roads, as well as Daufuskie and Hilton Head islands make for a beautiful natural setting worth visiting and exploring. Also attracting attention are the mammoth container cargo ships, some almost as long as a 75 story building, plowing the waters of Savannah harbor.

The Fort Screven installation gave Tybee a military character for more than 50 years, when 30 percent of Tybee Island's population consisted of military personnel. Today, the former base is a National Historic District. Behind the Officers' Row houses is the former parade ground. Today it is Jaycee Park. Lieutenant Colonel George Catlett Marshall (who was responsible later in his career for the Marshall Plan for the economic reorganization of Europe after World War II) lived next door. During his tenure at Fort Screven, the City of Savannah gave the crape myrtles to the fort as thanks to Marshall and his community minded command. A small creek winds through the park, adding to its attractiveness, as do the Live Oaks, bald cypress, cedars, bayberries, and wax myrtles.

Fantastic Place To Stay

John and his family have a fantastic place to stay. Very historical, close to the beach, light house parks so very much to do we just could not get it all in. We may have to get together again and stay longer. We had plenty of room and very nice sleeping arrangements, showers and the tubs were a god send when relaxing. Could not have picked a better place to stay with our group of 12. Loved every minute of our stay. Hope to be back soon.

Great vacation home at Tybee

The Tybee vacation home was very spacious and clean. We especially enjoyed outdoor dining and visiting on the huge wraparound porches. The park and playground was a very short walk and perfect for our two small grandchildren. The walk to the beach was also short and private and the owner provided a beach cart which was very nice. The bedrooms and bathrooms were great band lots of room to relax.

Great stay

There were 12 in our family group and this house accommodated us well. We never felt crowded. The historic home was charming with beautiful architectural details. It’s located a short, easy walk from the beach and a thirty minute drive to Savannah. The host was very easy to reach and was super friendly.

Wonderful Tybee Memories

We’ve been renting weeks this wonderful home since 2006. So many wonderful, special family memories have been made here. The kitchen is spectacular, the dining room table is huge and WiFi is fast. The large wrap-around porches are the perfect place for conversation or to enjoy an afternoon thunderstorm. We’ll definitely be back!

Beach Renter

This house is amazing. It has it's original charm while supplying updated amenities. My family will never stay anywhere else when we visit Tybee or Savannah. The owners were a dream to work with even on short notice. You can't ask for anything more.

Historical Southern Charm

The house was absolutely perfect for our family. We had 13 adults and 2 children with our family group. The history and southern charm of the house welcomes you to feel like you’re home away from home. Location is excellent with a short walk to the beach, which is one of the few sections of private beach still on Tybee. The park and playground across the street was also great for the kids. Our family had a wonderful stay and the communication with the owners was excellent. We look forward to our stay again next year.

Best spot on Tybee!

We had a wonderful stay on Officers Row. The house is the best suited for large groups that I've ever stayed in- lots of space, every kitchen item you could need, plenty of everything, and lots of bathrooms. Nice touches like night lights and motion sensor ligths as well. It was the perfect spot for our multi-generation family with ages 4 to 82. John was a great host and very communicative and shared great stories of the house and island. HIghly recommend!

New to the Tybee experience

Our family loves the beach, warm weather, small towns and great food. And our time on the island ticked them off one at a time. First, you step back in time with this great beach home managed by John and Patricia who grew up in this home. These folks are salt of the earth people. A really private beach area means you don’t climb over the neighbors. And for a small town population on the island you find a plethora of great places to eat without jaunting over to Savannah. If you want to step away from a hectic everyday life for a week or two this is the place to go.

Wonderful Again

Our family had a wonderful time. We stayed here last summer and will stay again next summer. The house is equipped with everything you need. The history of the house is very exciting. We loved the big dining room and were able to comfortably sit for dinner all together every night!, The southern charm in each room, wide hallways, and staircase is fascinating! The only negative is the house needs to be painted on the outside to perseve the “Officer’s Row” prestige.

Family Home Feel

This home really felt like a Tybee Beach home! The history of the home was very impressive. There were 14-16 people each day and we all were able to enjoy dinner as a group most evenings! All the rooms were very spacious and comfortable. Even though we had a large group no on had to ever wait for a bathroom!! The kitchen had plenty of dishes and utensils, and having 2 dishwashers was a dream! The large trees with the Spanish Moss which surrounded the house shaded us with a Savannah experience!

Wonderful house and location for our annual family trip

We decided to visit Tybee Island for our annual family trip (4 seniors, 4 adults, and 3 teenagers). This property was perfect for our group. Plenty of room so that people could have their own space but also a large dining room table and living rooms that we could hang out together. It is also decorated with interesting historical and local touches that I appreciated learning about. The two levels of wrap around porches were fantastic, and many of us sat outside during our down times. It was a short, easy walk to get to the beach from this house, and the beach was never crowded. The kitchen was well equipped for us to prepare most of our meals. The owners were very friendly and responsive and were quick to offer suggestions or answer any questions that we had. The house is located on the northern part of Tybee Island, which is quieter and less touristy/crowded than the southern part. It was also an easy drive to get into Savannah, so we spent several afternoons exploring parts of Savannah as well. One of my nephews said that this was one of his favorite houses all time that we have rented on our trips, and we have been doing these trips for at least 10 years.

Beautiful, historic home!

We (my family of 4) live locally to Tybee and had family visiting from out of state. There were 12 of us total, so renting a large house was the best option. The short walk to the private beach (no crowds) was an added bonus! This historic home was SO stunning. It’s updated where it needs to be, and has the remaining original late 1800’s charm throughout the whole home. You can feel the warmth of the owners family as you navigate through the house, with the home being equipped with anything you could possibly need for a family of all ages. We had 6 kids, ages 4-14, with our group, and the rest adults. So it was necessary for us to cook meals a few nights during our stay. The kitchen was stocked with all things you would need to feed a large group. It was greatly appreciated, as we’ve been to other rentals and they barely have any pots/pans and utensils. Not the case here! We highly recommend this home, and have it saved to potentially rent it again in the future! Thank you to John and your family for being great hosts! -Melissa

Great Location - Needs some care

We had a group of twelve enjoy this home in a great location! While the home had enough space to accommodate all of us, we were a bit dissatisfied with the cleanliness and upkeep of everything. Some of the boards on the porch are rotting and can be hazardous. A few of the rocker chairs on the porch were broken as well and more outdoor seating is needed. Some dishes were dirty, blinds on the windows were dusty, dirty rugs and many cobwebs. We are not sure if we were just the first to rent for the season and everything had not been cleaned properly. Some of the rooms could use some new decor, floors in the bathroom and third floor replaced, new light fixtures and small incidentals such as hooks in the bathroom would be great. We all loved Tybee Island and know this grand home has great potential!

Home not what it seems in the pictures.

I know that this is an old historic home, but there are rooms that just should not be used by guests in this house. The attic rooms are awful. There was even a chair in one of them with the stuffing torn out of it. You have to walk through unfinished attic space to get to the awful bathroom. The second floor bedrooms are ok, but the baths need some serious cleaning and updating. The bathroom in the small apartment next to the kitchen had a toilet that would not flush. The guests in that apartment had to pour water down the toilet every time, even when the owner came and said it was fixed. He said the problem was that the toilet was old. My suggestion is to replace the toilet. These guests would have had to go out and re-enter the house from a different door in order to have a toilet that flushed. Not very convenient in the middle of the night. Neither dish washer in the kitchen worked well. The owner worked on one of them and got it to work ok. The other one never did work. We knew that the living room had not been cleaned when we arrived because there were still puzzle pieces on the rug. The best thing about this house is that it is close to the beach, and the beach is beautiful! I would not recommend this house. You do not get what you pay for.

Spent a week with 3 generations of our family. The house was as advertised and up to the special occasion.Clean, spacious, and had everything. Its apparent John and Patricia put alot of time and effort into making sure their guests are comfortable. The neighborhood is safe and offers something for everyone.. The private beach was perfect for our large crew and enjoyed by all. The island was very enjoyable and had everything we needed. Most of all our hosts were the best Ive experienced anywhere. About the host

Your host

Host profile image
This is our family's house, left to us by our parents. The 'immediate' family (including nieces, nephews and their children) now totals 50 people. The memories the house holds for us are endless -- we hope you will make some of your own fine memories here!

Why they chose this property

This is a large and gracious, historic home built in 1895. It was used by the military to house officers and their families until after WWII. My parents 'discovered' Tybee Island in 1963 when my father was transferred to Savannah. They purchased a home on Officers' Row that year, then bought this house in approximately 1969. When our parents died, they wanted us to keep the house so that we could continue to enjoy Tybee and each other, and so that future generations could also enjoy this wonderful haven.

What makes this property unique

The home is spacious and airy; there are 11 foot ceilings throughout most of the house, with the kitchen having a 14 foot ceiling! We love to cook, so the kitchen is very well stocked with pots, pans, etc. -- but also with a large refrigerator (plus at least one spare 'drink' fridge), two dishwashers, a five burner induction stove/oven, a microwave, great storage, and plenty of cookware, serving dishes, dinnerware, and dishes. The dining room seats 14-16 people, and the porch has two picnic tables. The massive porches wrap around most of the house. Most of the home has the original heart pine floors, and molded tin ceilings adorn the hallway, dining room, living room, and library/den. The bedrooms are all very amply sized -- two have king sized beds, two have queen sized beds, and two have multiple beds (including 2 additional queen beds). Many of the bedrooms have the original working transom windows, and two have (nonworking) original fireplaces. While we have found it essential to retain the character of the house, it is modernized for functionality and in its furnishings. The ocean breeze keeps bugs away MOST of the year and the beach is a short walk. Access to the beach is through a private access, so it is a wonderful private area to enjoy the day in the sand. Public access to the beach is very limited on this part of the island so even on the most crowded weekends you will have plenty of room for you and your guests.
Across the street from the private drive used to access the house, there is a terrific park with a childrens playground, a basketball and pickleball court, a wonderful 1/2 mile walking trail, and a baseball field. Also within walking distance is the Tybee Lighthouse and the Tybee Museum and the Tybee Post Theather as well as 3 great restaurants.
