About this property
Privacy with Best Ocean View on Kohala Ranch
Located in the exclusive Kohala Ranch community on the beautiful and sunny North Kohala coast on the big island of Hawaii, Hale Maka Kohola is truly a breathtaking and magical place. Hawaiian for "Home to Eye Whales", the home features rich accents of traditional Hawaiian Koa wood and a sweeping panorama of the Pacific Ocean from the huge lanai which wraps around the entire ocean-facing side of this traditional "plantation style" house. Located on 5 acres, this property offers complete privacy.
Originally the model home for the gated Kohala Ranch development, Hale Maka Kohola is located on a prime lot at the lowest elevation nearest the ocean.
Enjoy absolute privacy and unobstructed views of the Hawaiian sunset and migrating humpback whales that breach in front of the house.
Located on the slopes of Kohala Mountain, Hale Maka Kohala offers views of Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Hualalai mountains.
Just down the coastal Akoni Pule Highway is the historic town of Kawaihae where King Kamehameha made his home and united the Hawaiian islands. Stop by the Hale l'a Da Fish House for the fresh catch or try the shrimp po' boy sandwich at the Seafood Bar & Grill on your way through town. If you're in the mood for a bike ride, cycling along the Akoni Pule and other coastal highways is some of the best in the world.
From Kawaihae, you can head out for some of the best sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving in the world or take a scenic drive up the winding Kawaihae Road to the lush and beautiful ranch town of Waimea to visit the weekly farmers markets. Want to spend time at the beach or hit the links? The world-renowned Mauna Kea and Hapuna beaches and golf courses are just 10 minutes from the house.
Drive north from the house and visit the sleepy town of Hawi and the spectacular Pololu Valley beyond. If you're feeling adventurous, take the path from the lookout to the valley floor and explore the secluded black sand beaches and clear Pololu stream as it winds through the lush valley scenery.
In the mood for some great food? Fine dining options like Manta or Brown's Beach House are always a favorite. Looking for something more casual? Kohala Burger & Taco, Lava Lava Beach Club and Hau Tree are great places to kick back with friends and family for lunch or drinks on the beach.
No matter how you choose to spend your time at Hale Maka Kohola, we know that you will have the time of your life enjoying all that the beautiful North Kohala Coast has to offer. Here is what one of our most recent guests had to say about their stay:
"We have been visiting the Big Island every year for the past 6 years and this is top of the list of our favorite properties! We loved the warm, salt water pool for getting in our workout before or after our day's adventures. Everything was comfortable from the king sized bed to the lanai furniture. Most spectacular was the view and the close proximity to the ocean compared to other Kohala Ranch properties. We enjoyed the sunset so much we made it a point to be back to the property by evening and only ate dinner out 3 times during our one month stay. There was simply no better setting to enjoy the beauty of the Big Island. Karen, the property manager, was a delight to work with. The house itself is dated and worn in some areas, however it didn't take away from the wonderful vibe and experience. Karen was extremely responsive to any requests. Without a doubt we will return."

About the host
Hosted by Peter Redmayne

Our background is in the seafood business. We have lived in Seattle since the late 1970s. I first arrived in Hawaii in 1974 as a young Ensign on a salvage and diving ship In my 40 years in the seafood business, I have traveled the world visiting over 20 countries.
Why they chose this property
We first stayed at Hale Make Kohala when we rented the house for three months in the winter of 2011-2012. We loved the Hawaiian Plantation House feel. It wasn't the fanciest house on Kohala Ranch, but we felt it was the most authentic. And the 180 degree ocean view was unparalleled. So we bought in to the house and in 2021, we bought our partner out. We have upgraded most of the furniture, electronics and kitchen in recent years.
We spend most winters now in Hawaii, chasing whales in our boat, chasing golf balls at the Mauna Kea and paddle boarding in the morning. We can't think of a better place we'd like to be.
