About this property

Nell's Farm House - Shelby-Boiling Springs-Tryon Int. Equestrian Center

Your home away from home. Live in the city and tired of the traffic and busy life? Are you working in the Shelby area, visiting a student at Gardner Webb University, attending a wedding, or a family function? Give up that cramped motel room and come on down to Nell's Farm House.

One of the best locations in Shelby! Located on a quiet, tree-lined street just outside of town, this super-comfortable, spotlessly clean, quiet, country cottage is in a historic community on a farm that has been in the family for over 100 years. The house is furnished in a vintage style to reflect the history of Nell and her family, emphasizing comfort. Nell's Farm House is intimate and informal.
Note: While we don't have many reviews on this platform, it's because we prefer booking directly through our own website or using similar platforms. We truly value personal connections with our clients!

Nell's Farm House lets you escape the day-to-day rat race and provides you with a memorable country experience. You can relax on the deck and nap the afternoon away. Here is a place to sit back and relax while watching the horses graze in the surrounding meadows. The nights are peaceful, with only the sound of nature and the light of the stars. The days are opportunities for hiking, exploring, fishing, or just relaxing.

GUEST INFORMATION: Is it time to reconnect with what life was like in a gentler and quieter time?

Nell's Farm House is your place to be when visiting Shelby, North Carolina, for business, pleasure, American Legion World Series Baseball, Gardner Webb University, Tryon International Equestrian Center, Cleveland County Fair, or when passing through Cleveland County for one of our many events.

While suitable for any traveler, the home is perfect for families who need affordable, flexible, and friendly lodging. The house has three nice-sized bedrooms: one king bed, one double bed, and a third bedroom with bunk beds for the children. The cozy den has a television with basic cable. The eat-in kitchen contains all cookware, utensils, and kitchenware, and all linens and towels are supplied. There is a large, centrally located bath with a double vanity and tub with shower.

However, one of the most outstanding amenities is outside the home, situated on a quiet road in a peaceful community. The deck off the kitchen presents pictorial views of the woods and surrounding pastures.

Perhaps one of the best features is the private deck overlooking the pasture, which provides an outdoor living and dining area to take advantage of Shelby's wonderful climate. Whether for breakfast in the morning or a glass of wine in the evening, you will also enjoy the gas grill in the evening as you watch horses and deer and listen to the Katydid singing in the woods.

With a burglar alarm and code set just for you, you will feel safe and secure.

Air Conditioning Issues

The owners are delightful, the house was very clean, well stocked & as portrayed on the VRBO site. However, the air conditioning system is very poor. The night we arrived the AC wasn't on and after being turned on it never worked. The temperature inside the house went from 81 to 90 degrees. The owners sent over a bag of ice and a fan and finally had someone work on the outside unit around 10 pm. By 3 or so the next morning the house was cooled to 72. However each of the following days the house would start at 72 and warm up to 78-80 by the afternoon and not cool down again until 3 am. We were at an outdoor event every day and really needed to have a cool house to come back to. That made our stay very unpleasant.

Country Getaway

Just like visiting grandmas house. The hosts were very welcoming and we loved the snacks they left us upon arrival. It took a little to get used to used to the well water (I’m used to the city). Overall it was a nice trip and had plenty of space for my family of 6.

Wide open spaces

We arrived late, long after bed time. Immediately we noticed how cozy warm the home was when we walked in tired, cold and ready to crawl into bed. It was such a welcoming warmth. The house has a comfortable familiarity to it, like going to visit family. In the morning we sat on the deck and watched the horses graze in the pasture and the dogs play in the yard while we had our coffee. The photos on the site do not do justice to the pristine condition of the kitchen appliances. Anyone who considers themselves culinary savy would have a grand time using the mid century modern equipment. Ya know, they just don't make them like they used to. The owners, Debbie and Harold, could not have been more pleasant to talk to about the rich history of the farm and the Metcalfe community.

Peaceful and quite.

We enjoyed our stay at Debi and Harold's farm house. They were both very friendly and made us feel like family. The home was very comfortable. I loved sitting on the back porch and looking at the horses and enjoying nature. Thank you for opening up Nell's Farm House.

Calming Getaway

We were in Shelby for our daughters wedding at Slightly Differnt Nursery and the Nell's house was real close to the venue and a great place for family members to stay. We did not spend a lot of time there other than to sleep because of wedding responsibilities but it was extremely comfortable, clean, beautifully decorated and a welcome relief after wedding activities. Norman was very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed.

Great Getaway!

We needed to spend a few days in the area to get our GWU student settled for the summer. The few nearby hotels didn't have room for us. (Family of 6, children ages 18-4.) I decided to check VRBO and found Nell's. No more expensive than a hotel for us, but a thousand times better. Spacious and clean. Nice sized rooms, well-equipped kitchen, large bathroom with two sinks. Best of all, room for the kids to run, throw a frisbee, chase bubbles. Quiet, a million stars at night, and there are so many lightning bugs that they look like Christmas lights in the trees. Our family will definitely stay again. We had a great time! Debi and Harold's hospitality is special.

Southern Hospitality At It's Best!!

My husband and I stayed at Nell's Farm House for four days. When we pulled into the carport Deb and Norman were right there to greet us. They took the time to show us around and to give us a brief history of the house. We had all the amenities needed for our stay, and a great deal of room. Each room was nicely decorated for comfort and well being. The beds were extremely comfortable as was all of the lovely, vintage furniture in Nell's home. I loved the large kitchen and sitting area that led to an open deck to the back yard and pasture. Deb and Norman have a great love of horses. There were several horses grazing in the pasture during the day, and again, at night. It was nice to come home at night and sit on the deck to watch the horses, as well as the hundreds of fireflies that lit the night skies. It was so calming after a hectic day of visiting relatives and sightseeing. The house is centrally located to Historic Downtown Shelby. There were a number of very nice restaurants and shops in town. A wonderful little town full of history and charm. I am a lover of history and antiques. Nell's home, as well as downtown Shelby, was the perfect place for me to be. I so enjoyed my stay in that lovely house. We intend to visit the area next Spring and have every intention of staying at Nell's House... Our home away from home. Thank you Deb & Norman for your gracious hospitality. Your kindness meant a great deal to Phil and I. I'll be in touch!

Christmas Season

What a fantastic place with fantastic owners! We spent our Christmas Holiday at Nell's Farm House as we have family nearby. The Metcalfe's(Debi &Harold) were fantastic hosts as they had a Christmas Tree decorated and awaiting us. Wassail on the stove and a fresh evergreen wreath on the front door. This house is exactly as the pictures show. The house and surrounding farm so closely resembled the house I grew up in and spent 45 Christmas Seasons that my family decided to gather in Nell's living room for our gift giving. What a outstanding stay! It was like being back at my grandparents house again, with lots of memories. Oh and if you like special sunrises, make the coffee, open the curtain on the sliding glass door and have a seat at the kitchen table. Peer out the door and wait, it'll be there.(You can imagine it now, can't you?) Beautiful, I saw it. This is the best. House, hosts, location, surroundings, serenity, you name it. (BTW: The Metcalfe's must be fantastic people. They, like me love those tiny layer chocolate cakes!)

Can't wait to go again!

I just had an excellent stay at Nell's Farm House. The house is very comfortable and quiet. I cooked several meals while there and was able to find everything I needed in the kitchen. It is well-stocked, clean, and fully operational. I am originally from Shelby, and being at Nell's was like being back home for me. Look forward to going again when I make a trip down to work on the family tree! Thank you Debi for your kind hospitality!

Peaceful and Relaxing

We had a great time visiting family in NC. We looked around for Hotels close by and none of them had good reviews AND would take pets. The ones that took pets looked kind of icky :( So i decided to check out VRBO. Low and behold....there was 1 place in Shelby. Nell's! It was great! Debi was very nice and genuinely excited we were coming. She welcomed us with kindness and enthusiasm.....but she was very good about giving us our space after a 9 hour car ride :) The beds were REALLY comfortable and the house was SO quite. It was REALLY nice after spending a day with a 4 year old. Debi moved her horses to the back pen, so every morning we would wake up, look out the back door, and see the horses. That was awesome! I would HIGHLY recommend this place! Thanks again Debi!

Home away from home...

We had a BLAST staying at Nell's. The area is beautiful, and house is close to Gardner-Webb where our son goes to school. Both Debi and Harold are friendly and very accommodating. We enjoyed being able to fix our son home-cooked meals (what he misses most from home). Able to step out the door to walk in the countryside, or hop in the car to see trees changing color across the state. Will definitely be staying here whenever we visit in the future.

very nice to have a place to stay for 11 days while working the cleveland county fair. everything was just as the post said. nice to have a fully furnished kitchen for some home cooked meals. harold and debi were great hosts, as well as the family dog maddox (who we looked forward to seeing every day!) far enough out in the country to be nice & quiet yet close enough to town to not have a long drive for errands. if you get a chance while there try out "smoke on the square" restaurant in downtown! the shrimp and grits are to die for!

Country Charm, Southern Hospitality

We chose this property because of it's proximity to Gardner-Webb University in nearby Boiling Springs. Both Debi and Harold were very informative and willing to answer all our questions about the surrounding area. We ran into a last minute problem that we feared would be an issue, but instead they were very understanding. Upon arrival the house was clean and exactly as described in the ad. Over the course of several days Debi gave recommendations on places to eat, and places to go. Our stay was pleasant and relaxing, especially sitting out on the elevated deck. We recommend it to anyone needing to stay in the area as opposed to staying in an area hotel.

just wanted to let lookers know how accommodating debi has been to us! we had a very unique situation and it did take several phone calls and emails but we have settled on something there. we are going to be staying there for several days (12) and looking forward to a "home" setting instead of motel room while in town. can't wait to write another review after our stay to let people know how nice it is! :)

Nell's house, located on Hafta' Mosey farm, is hosted by Harold and Debi Metcalfe, founders of Stolen Horse International, Idaho, pictured here with Debi, was stolen from us in 1997. She was recovered 51 weeks later. Her theft is the foundation for the nonprofit organization that assists thousands each year.

Why they chose this property

This home has been part of our family since it was built in 1975. Nell, lived in the house alone most of that time until she suffered a stroke in 2004. She was diagonised with Alzheimer;s Disease and and passed away in 2011. Nell's Farm House relfects her wonderful life with from the vintage dishes to the pictures. We kept as much of Nell in the house as we could but also mixed in our love of horses into the house. It is an interesting mix vistors enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Peace. Quiet. Crickets singing. No smog. No traffic. Lightly traveled roads to walk on without cars whizzing by. Horses. Trees. Green fields. Close to the new Tryon International Equestrian Center, Gardner Webb University and area businesses.
