About this property

1 of a kind

From the front patio, composed of historic downtown sidewalk slabs featuring grids of purple pavement prisms dating back to 1920s to the front doors preserved from the Seafarer restaurant or the grates from the old Astor Hotel, you cannot help feel transported back in time in our space.  This getaway nestled in the underground features an eclectic collection of signage and relics quintessential to experiencing the Astoria of the past. The nine foot church door framing the master bedroom, net racks from a local cannery, and signage from locations including the Peter Pan Market and Union Town Steam Baths are a few of the historic details you’ll notice throughout the property. Located on the edge of the Columbia River just inland from the ‘Graveyard of the Pacific’ we even boast a porthole from a ship and infamous origins. While these details will delight your senses, you will also have visual access to the underground tunnels through the windows in each bedroom and we invite each occupant to enjoy an Astoria Underground tour as part of their stay.

Exotic Adventure
Jeff Thanks for such an exotic adventure…from your pleasurable personal attention to the eclectic artistry you exhibited in not only your underground tour but your imaginative vacation home. Your inspired vision and historical creativity displayed enhanced not only our visit but our knowledge of Astoria. In addition, your place is geographically located in the perfect place to not only tour Astoria but venture out to see other significant Oregon attractions. We had a blast…Thanks Jeff and Dori

A feast for the eyes.
We absolutely loved our stay here, everything was amazing. We kept finding new treasure every time we looked around. The location is perfect to walk around Astoria. After a long day of fishing the patio was a great place to relax, with a fireplace and music. 10/10 will book again. Thank you for a wonderful weekend.

Unforgettable!
Jeff was amazing from the start and the property is truly one of a kind! We were lucky enough to get a bonus tour from Jeff, to ensure Fort George blew their five o’clock whistle. The history and location are unmatched by any other experience I’ve had in Astoria, one of my favorite places in the world. Stay here, and get a better appreciation for the people and history of Astoria and have an amazing time while you’re at it. Very clean, comfortable with surprises around every corner. I guarantee we will return to experience more of the wunderground! Thank you so much, Jeff, for sharing your magical life and world with us for the weekend!

Amazing Space for Astoria Fun
To begin with contact with Jeff, it was excellent. We arrived at the space and he gave us a small tour to familiarize us with the details. Once we settled in, we realized how central we were to all activities in downtown. We had an great time exploring and utilizing the steam shower! We highly recommend the Astoria Underground tour as well if you're there on a Saturday. Very informational and entertaining. We would definitely stay here again.

Perfect and one of a kind
Thank you so much for sharing the Wunderground with us! It is such a cool place to hang out and so comfy and cozy too. It is also the perfect location for exploring Astoria, if you can tear yourself away. There is so much to see and everything is so artistically arranged. We will definitely be back, to find out what we missed. This is the sort of place you want to tell everyone about, but at the same time, keep it a secret. Ray and Chad were excellent and fun hosts. We do look forward to meeting the man behind this wonderful creation (Jeff), next time we stay. Thank you for everything, Mike and Carla

Experiential playground
The wonder ground is a wonderful splurge And quite a treat that will not disappoint. Accessibility for walking in the downtown and waterfront area can’t be beat. The attention to details in the apartment are so unique, interesting, and a work of art; it just fits the Astoria vibe so well. All of the amenities were perfectly done and we slept very well in the big cozy bed. You won’t be disappointed!

This was an incredible and totally unique property! It's impossible to cover all of the charm and character you will find here. We walked all around town and had a great time. We actually looked forward to coming to this place at the end of our nights because it was so fun to hang out at. Highly recommend, a must stay!

Amazing
Take this opportunity. Do not second guess yourself. Worth it. Would not stay for more than two nights like we did just because I need a lot of clothing storage space. Also, as a mom, if my kids were less- behaved and their age- youngest is 10, I would leave them at home. It would stress me out. Everything is so cool and you want to touch it all. But that is just me, I doubt the owner would see it as an issue, he was awesome!!

One Of A Kind
The aptly-named Wunderground was just right for our two-night stay in Astoria. Perfectly situated in the heart of the commercial district, yet distinctly situated one level below the street, with private parking- what a gem! The owner, Jeff Daly, built out the space using reclaimed materials, whimsical items, and a plethora of locally-sourced memorabilia. His photographer’s eye pulled together a unique VRBO, perfect for short stays. Longer stays might wish for a full-sized coffee maker and more dedicated space for clothing in the bedrooms. Nice touches of note were the snacks, chilled water, several cans of beer & bottle of wine provided by the host. The kitchen was stocked with enough cookware, utensils and other essentials to allow for frustration-free meal prep and clean up. The large table was great for games as well as meals, though the seating was lower than optimal for the table height. The hall half-bath felt a bit exposed with its port-hole window in the barn-style door…a consideration if traveling with friends. The full bathroom was well stocked with towels, travel-sized shampoo, two robes and hair blow dryer. The high-end shower/steam bath was a treat! Both bedrooms had good quality mattresses and bedding. Each had windows that looked into the “underground”, with bi-directional window fans for ventilation. We really appreciated the books of Art Wolfe’s photography, the “Playa” book on the history of Burning Man, as well as the three informational binders (local eateries/local attractions, instructions for remotes/lights, etc, and a bit of personal history). Jeff responded promptly to my one texted question, and followed up the next day to see if we needed anything. Having lived in Astoria for most, if not all of his life, he knows the area intimately and is an engaging resource. You can’t go wrong here if you enjoy ingenuity, history and have a sense of humor!

Great location, unique spot!
There were some issues prior to traveling, but the owner was fast to respond and more than compensated for the troubles. The bedrooms and bathrooms aren't very private (none lock or even latch shut), but it didn't seem to be a huge deal breaker for our group. If you or others in your party need more privacy, then maybe pass. The location and uniqueness of the property are totally worth it.

About the host

Hosted by Jeff Daly

Host profile image
Whether you have lived in Astoria your entire life or are visiting for the first time, it is impossible to ignore the rich history of this town. After months of research and preparations, Jeff Daly opened the Astoria Underground Tours  in late 2018.
The tours were created to offer a unique perspective on aspects of the town’s past and answers to visitor curiosity about what happens under the sidewalks. “Jeff Daly filled a distinct void in Clatsop County’s cultural tourism, He did so with incredible imagination, energy, and unconventionality,” wrote John Goodenberger in a nomination letter for the CEDR award.
The unforeseen circumstances the world faced in 2020 catalyzed Jeff’s newest project; The Astoria Wunderground Experience, an addition to the tour’s space boasting a unique lodging and entertainment experience for visitors or locals seeking a staycation.

Astoria Wunderground is an extension to the existing tour experience including accommodations for up to four people. The space offers two bedrooms, one and a half bathrooms, a kitchenette, and living room. Like the Astoria Underground Tours the lodging space is completely ADA friendly and accessible and has also been constructed with the health and safety of the visitors during the heightened times of a pandemic paramount. The floors and walls are concrete and easily flushed and cleaned between stays. Windows throughout the dwelling opening to tunnels provide ventilation while also providing a glimpse into the past.

Not only do the views from the windows offer a glimpse into the past but the dwelling space itself is full of repurposed relics and items from the local area. These items’ inclusion offers an immersion and rich experience for people wanting to connect with the area. Such items include, signage, net racks from the CRPA docks, railing grates from the Astor Hotel used for counter bars and table tops, original doors and windows from the Uniontown sauna and Columbia Travel and the list goes on.

What makes this property unique

Let me share a recent guests review.
It is difficult to fully convey the extremely unique quality of Jeff's "Wunderground Experience". We've been avid AirBnb'rs for several years and have many great memories and stories about where we've stayed. But this one was by far THE most unique stays we've ever had! The space Jeff and friends have created is clearly a labor of love. So many repurposed items directly tied to Astoria's history are thoughtfully placed EVERYWHERE! Not to mention its location UNDERGROUND beneath a parking lot with windows peering into the incredibly interesting tunnels underneath much of the city! When we first arrived and punched the numbers on the door lock, it took us at least 30-45mins to fully absorb the atmosphere. Nostalgia everywhere! The entry doors we're obtained from a town pub of long ago! A barber's chair in one of the bedrooms clearly has seated many THOUSANDS of people and it clearly shows it! But then, that's the charm of it all...serious local history is depicted throughout! And if all this were not enough, Jeff and 2 hilarious cohorts provided an escorted tour through a section of Astoria's underground tunnels. They were SO funny as they educated us about a town initially established in the late 1800's. We were not only entertained but were fascinated by their historical (and often hysterical) stories! The nightly rate w/fees is not for the faint of the heart or the budget minded. The experience for US however...priceless!
