Remote getaway - great connections to locals

The home itself is just as the pictures show- clean and very comfortable. The external views of the beach were a little obstructed by the palms more than I anticipated but this does give some privacy. Unfortunately, at this time of year, the beach has quite a lot of trash washing up from the mainland which is out of the control of the Owner but a reality to be aware of since it limits the beach space. We had an excellent experience with the additional options available through the property manager. It was very convenient to have provisions available on our arrival and we had fabulous meals with a local couple. There was also a successful fishing excursion and we were able to have that for several meals, including the one that was prepared for us. The host had the boat transfer ready to meet us and all of that was very smooth. In general, this location does require some effort to get to which makes it very private, but can be affected by weather etc. Overall, we had an excellent stay.

Excellent secluded beach vacation

Lovely beach house, boat in only access from the main town on Utila, 45 minute walk to Neptunes, 15 minute kayak addle to Cays island where the locals live. More houses have been built since the pictures have been taken but only saw 5-10 people walk past the house a day. Very nice people and services from Trish!

Unforgettable

Dave and Trish are wonderful host. They took care of all our needs. The pineapple house is the perfect beach front home to get away from it all. The reef right outside the door was outstanding for snorkeling. The valet diving service was a plus, just walk out on your own private pier and a short boat ride to the best diving in the world. We can't wait to return. Thanks to anyone that made Utila a unforgettable experience.

First time in Utila

We past an excellent stay at Pineapple house. The property was clean and well-maintained. The manager and his wife were very friendly and welcoming. The manager gave back deposit properly. We enjoy snorkeling just in front of the Pineapple house and like to kayak on the sea. The house is well-equiped and a lot of place to all our family. We recommend this house for a nice and quiet stay, safe to go with children or enjoy with friends. The house and the area looks like a postal card.

Perfect Place to get Away 😁

To start the pictures are accurate, which is why we chose this place. The best part was meeting the caretakers, Dave & Trish. We we’re new to the island, don’t speak Spanish and had no idea on what we wanted to do till we got there. Dave & Trish helped us arranged everything we wanted to do from snorkeling, diving, deep sea fishing, trips to town and even arranged for us to have the house stocked with food. The location was perfect, house was very clean, everything there to stay for 7 days, but the people we met around this location made the trip our best vacation ever. This place will be the only place we stay until we buy a home down here.

Peace, quiet, snorkeling and sand flies

This is a great place to stay, if you're looking for quiet relaxation and great snorkeling. Air conditioning, appliances and house are all nice and functional. Trish does an amazing job arranging for groceries and keeping in touch in case we needed anything. Captain Ronald took us over to the Cay View to watch the world cup final and to eat delicious garlic shrimp. He can also take you for snorkeling excursions and arrange for fresh fish from his brother. The people are always friendly, the snorkeling is great. Just remember mosquito repellent and also remember to wash it off before swimming to protect the reef. Thanks!

Beach life.

From the owner to the property manager to the water taxi driver and the chef, the whole team works together to make your stay pleasant. This place is a great get away—enjoy some snorkeling, read (or write) a book, get some fishing in, or simply revel in the peace and quiet. The recommended cooks don’t disappoint and will bring food (almost daily) for a reasonable price. The water taxi is fast. The closets are spacious. There is a store about 6 minutes from the house (open from 3p-6p). Past guests have left books, puzzles, games and bug spray, etc. Easy living.

Pineapple and Coral House Paradis in the Utila Cays

When we originally booked the Pineapple House for our trip but as our group grew we needed more space and Trish was able to accommodate us with the Coral house as well. When we finally arrived to our new version of paradise Trish was there to greet us and show us around both properties and answer any questions we had. Myself and half of our group stayed in the Pineapple House and we can't say enough about this property. It was just amazing! We were just steps away from the beautiful blue waters we had kayaks and a dock at our disposal and the snorkeling was just incredible! This property was undoubtedly as advertised and more. Trish is an outsanding property manager and Mr Laurence has two unbelievably superb homes on Treasure Beach. We can't thank both of them enough for our experience.

Treasure Beach Getaway

Lovely property on even lovelier reef! Perfect for a family getaway! My 2 teenage boys, husband and myself thoroughly enjoyed our time at the Pineapple House. We spent time every day snorkeling on the amazing reef just steps from the front door; reading in the hammock swaying from the dock; fishing; and playing games (bring your own, or use those at the house!). The kitchen is well stocked, and their offer to provide provisions is much appreciated, so that there is food / beverages when you arrive. we also took advantage of having Melvin & Christina cook dinner for us one night - which was amazing, and to go fishing with Melvin - such a terrific local experience! I highly recommend (and do it early in your trip - we ate the fish we caught every day thereafter!). Anke, the recommended scuba guide, is fantastic as well! All in all a great get away - but be fully prepared to really unplug: there are no screens and only limited internet available (i,.e., you may be able to do some work, but don't plan on attending to critical deadlines from afar! you may be thwarted!)

Gorgeous Secluded Private Beach

Staying at the Pineapple House is a truly fantastic life experience! My husband and I stayed for a week in November and delighted in the beautiful home, friendly caretakers, Dave and Trish, and the feeling of living on our own private beach. From the time of our arrival by boat from the other side of the island we were completely relaxed and able to enjoy the view from the porch, snorkel in the pristine coral reef in front of the house and walk the beach looking for shells. The accommodations are elegant. Laurence and Beth have done a fabulous job of decorating this home in a style that is at once casual and grand. It was fun to cook in the huge kitchen and to share a meal with Dave and Trish. We got delicious fresh fish on our first day on the island and were able to go into town to go shopping, although Dave will do this for you if you prefer. This house is perfect for a couple, a small family or two couples. There is opportunity to explore, meet the neighbors, go to the Cays (Cayas Cochinos) or just hang out and relax. It was wonderful to have access to a washing machine. Internet access is limited but Trish will help you if you need to be connected. Please consider donating to BICA (Bay Islands Conservation Association) to help conserve this area of the world. We highly recommend this gorgeous home for your stay on Utila.

Great Snorkeling, Poor Beach, Nice House, Sand Flies, Could be so much more...

We rented the Pineapple house in Jan 2015. Our group was two families. My family was 2 adults and 3 small children (5, 2, 1) and the other family was 2 Adults and 1 small children (6, 4). The boat ride from Utila is in a dorry (about a 20' boat with bench seats). Be prepared to arrive wet depending on the size of the seas (they were very high when we left for the house, luckily we had life jackets for the kids with us). The house shares a dock with three other houses (the coral house and lavendar house). These three houses are fairly close together but while we were there they were empty. The beach was full of coral rock and garbage. The palapa umbrellas were dilapidated and the chairs had no cushions on them like in the pictures. See my pictures. The beach has been left unkempt and is basically unusable for lounging. If you want to walk on the beach bring sandals (like some tevas) or water shoes. The coral starts very close to the beach with some sea grass and scattered rocks in the space between the shore and the coral. The snorkeling was excellent and we were able to snorkel everyday with our boys (the highlight of this rental). The rental house is nice. It is 4 bedrooms but the two downstairs rooms are separate from the main living quarters (you have to go outside to get to them) and they have a full bathroom and the washer and dryer. The upstairs kitchen was adequate and it had a large table that held our large group easily. The beds were all very firm to the point of being uncomfortable. The AC units are all wall units with the exception of one room being a mini split. The wall units are very loud especially the one in the main room. All the rooms have ceiling fans. Both bedrooms up stairs have large bathrooms. The sand flies are there. The first couple of days they weren't too bad because there was a good breeze. The last few days the wind died and the flies came out. The flies are on the veranda in the evenings and we had to close the windows because they come in through the screens. The boat ride out is the same as in and when we left it was raining. Again be prepared to get wet and change before you get on the plane. Dave and Trish and the others that they use to manage this rental were very friendly and helpful. I wish we could say we were going back but it is unlikely. Not a good destination for families with kids.

Wonderful

This is a special place. It is private, peaceful, and beautiful. We dove and fished and otherwise just relaxed on the large balcony. It was also an extremely easy experience to set up, despite being a bit off the beaten path. Trish and Laurence made everything run smooth and Anke the divemaster, Niko the boat driver, and Melvin the cook and fisherman were all the best I have ever encountered at what they do. A wonderful house, a wonderful community, and a wonderful experience.

Great place to stay.

The overall experience with Trish was great. She was accommodating, and went out of her way to make our stay enjoyable. She arranged fresh fish deliveries, and an in-house chef Melvin with his daughter Celine, as needed, as well as island boating transportation with Captain Ronald. Everyone was personable and welcoming! The one downside was the internet/wifi connection was very spotty and inconsistent. It was totally relaxing, peaceful and beautiful swimming in the crystal clear water..

Great Stay!

Things we loved: The locals. Captain Ronald helped us get around, took us to a local baseball game, to town, and to the cays, even when it was super windy. His brother Melvin made us an amazing dinner, and his wife and daughter made us tamales as well because I love Honduran tamales and none could be found in Utila. Trish and Dave were there to answer all of our questions regarding the island and locals, and the house in general. We loved that great snorkeling could be found right outside the door, and we had a dock for nighttime gazing. Things we noticed: It was just the two of us, so we enjoyed the upstairs two bedrooms only. If we came down with the whole family, we would probably rent Coral House as well rather than use the downstairs. The first story bedrooms smelled slightly musty, which is actually pretty typical for beach homes. We used up a bit of electricity trying to cool the bedroom at night. I forgot to mention to Trish and Dave on my way out, but it seems as if the AC units in the bedrooms could use some attention. All in all, we loved it and can see ourselves coming back. This is definitely a place to unwind and disconnect. If that's not your thing, Utila will probably not be your ideal vacation. But it was great for us.

Beautiful place with beautiful people

Staying at pineapple place was such an amazing experience. We were truly able to disconnect, unwind, and enjoy paradise. From the time we landed on utila until our last sunrise it was a memorable trip. Snorkeling the coral reef at the end of the dock was a highlight each day. The property managers Trish and Dave make everything easy.....From assisting with arrival and departure plans, stocking the house, to any other request they are always there to help. Their company is just an added bonus. Be sure to have Melvin cook dinner for you at least one night or you will truly be missing out on a fun experience. He took us fishing one morning and we were able to eat some of the fish we caught that day. His brother Ronald is also a great perk to coming here. He can take you to utila town, the cays, or to Neptune’s for a great meal. We were lucky and even saw some dolphins one morning. It is a true paradise.

Pineapple House

Great trip! Thanks Trish and Dave for making this an easy vacation. Awesome to walk into a stocked fridge with fresh fish ready to go. House is simple, open and has everything you might need. Dock is wonderful. Sunsets from the upper level were a highlight. Great place for morning coffee too. Snorkeling off the dock was great- agree with all the other reviews. Huge variety of fish. Saw a feel rays, a rare spanish lobster and some huge schools of snappers. Nice low key diving with Bogdan and his team at Utila Cays Diving. Very small group made us feel very pampered and safe. Plus amazing cinnamon rolls! Couple of home cooked meals with Melvin and Kristi- yummy and entertaining. Thanks for everything!!! We loved Utila!!

A fun and relaxing week at Pineapple House

Our family of 8 stayed at Pineapple House for the last week of March 2019 and had a wonderful and relaxing week. The house is great and accommodates a large party easily! Trish and Dave were very helpful before and during our stay (with travel arrangements, provisioning the house and any other questions we had or that came up). We enjoyed snorkeling off the dock and right from our own private beach, scuba diving off the dock, a day trip to Water Cay, excursions to different places in Utila and lots of family time on the big deck playing games and just relaxing and watching the fire burn in the pit right below us on the beach. The sunsets were spectacular and we were lucky enough to see a beautiful one every night of our trip! Overall a wonderful trip, at a wonderful house if you want seclusion and quality family time.

Best Vacation of our Life!

We really enjoyed our stay at the Pineapple House in Utila! Dave and Trish the caretakers for the property provided top notch service consistently and were very helpful in setting up water taxis to Utila for us and were very informative and knowledgeable about Utila. The house itself is amazing! It's very well laid out with 4 generous bedrooms and a large living room. All of the appliances and features in the house worked perfectly. We especially enjoyed the outdoor covered porches to hang out on after a day or paddle boarding, kayaking, snorkeling, or scuba diving. The snorkeling along the reef out in front of the house is world class in my opinion. This house is very well cared for and I give it a "10". Thanks for such an enjoyable and memorable experience. Awesome Private Non-Commercialized Vacation

The Pineapple House is the perfect place for people who want to get away from the commercialized vacation and get to know the locals in a safe, comfortable environment. This was our second trip to the Pineapple House and certainly not our last. What we love about this place is the ability to be by ourselves on our own private beach, reading books, and relaxing. What we really love about this place is if we want to interact with people, we call Herman, who comes over in his boat and picks us up and brings us to town or restaurants on the Cays. If your own private beach isn't quiet enough, Herman will bring you to an undeveloped island for a few hours where you can rest in hammocks. Don't want to cook, call Trish or Dave and they will have Christy and Melvin come over and cook you dinner with fresh fish that Melvin caught earlier in the day. If scuba diving is your escape, Bogan from Utila Cays Diving will pick you up on your dock. More than likely there will be less than five divers including dive master Mike. It doesn't get much better than this at the Pineapple House!!

Relaxing time at Pineapple House

We just returned from a fantastic week at the Pineapple House. Dave and Trish were very helpful, as was everyone we encountered. The house is beautiful and had everything we needed. We were pleasantly surprised to find a stash of board and card games which we enjoyed in the evenings after dinner. The bathrooms are spacious and the living room sofa was frequently covered by five large napping teenagers. Very comfortable! We were able to manage without AC until bedtime but it was warm when we were using the gas stove for dinner. The snorkeling off the beach and nearby dock were the best we have ever experienced and we've been to many places. The beach is a combination of sand and coral, so shoes (flip flops) are needed. The only drawback was the trash and garbage along the beach. One day after the wind changed direction refuse (including baby diapers) drifted in from the Keys on the beach in front of the house. Orlando cleaned it up late in the day. I also missed the pads on the lounge chairs. And yes, the sand flies are present. The best defense is baby oil. The sun decks on top of the dock made for beautiful sunrise and sunset viewing! Chef John prepared two excellent meals for our family that made our stay especially memorable. It was a treat to walk into the house upon our arrival to see Chef John ready to serve us. We also enjoyed a family-style meal made the house for us by Christy and Melvan from the fishing village on the Keys. Our trip to Water Cay was also a highlight. There were a few other people there when we arrived and it was peaceful. Then the party boats arrived with blaring music. My suggestion if you want a quite island experience - go early and leave before noon. Utila is a safe and beautiful island. Our family would stay at the Pineapple House again.

About the host

Hosted by Laurence Hegarty

Host profile image
My wife and I share a mutual love of scuba diving which has fueled our passion for travel and that's how we first discovered the beautiful island of Utila.
We'd been visiting the island regularly for a couple of years, when in 2005 we purchased several pieces of beachfront land at Treasure Beach. Our first home, the Coral House, was completed in 2007 and our second, the Pineapple House, was finished in early 2009.
We love helping our guests get the most (or least) from their time here and of course diving whenever we get the chance.

Why they chose this property

I used to love to visit Ambergris Caye Belize in the early nineties and had always wanted to buy property there but somehow never did. When i first visited Utila in 2003 it reminded me of what Ambergris Caye used to be like (but sadly no longer is), quiet, no cruise ships, no chains, no golf courses, no roads and unaffected friendly locals. So this time i took the plunge, determined to enjoy a Caribbean island before it was spoiled by the 21st century.

What makes this property unique

Treasure Beach is three miles from town and can only be reached by boat, this makes it perfect for those seeking to leave the tourist hoards behind and find peace and privacy. If you're looking for discos, buffets and hard rock t-shirts, you'll hate it. Those seeking warm water, snorkeling, shell collecting, an empty beach, star gazing, diving and boat trips to little cays inhabited by fisherman will love it.
