The owner who lives nearby could not have been nicer. The cottage was charming, in an old timey sort of way. The location to seafood stores and a beach could not have been more convenient - just a walk away. We'll be back!
Perfect cottage for an incredible Menemsha experience
This is THE place to stay for those who love the little fishing village of Menemsha. The location cannot be beat - you can walk to everything: the beach, sunsets, Menemsha Fish Market, Larsens, Homeport, Menemsha Galley, and there are little shops to explore, as well the fantastic art at Ruel Gallery just steps from the cottage. The house has everything you need for a comfortable stay. Check in/check out was seamless, the house was clean and well stocked, and Barbara is an absolutely lovely host! We will be back to enjoy it all over again!
My husband, newborn and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The space was plenty big and had everything we needed. Barbara and her husband were available if needed which was nice. Cannot beat the location!
We really enjoyed our stay. The location is perfect, in walking distance of the town beach, the fishing shacks on Menemsha Pier and the galleries and shops along the main road. The cottage is comfortable and Barbara was a great host. We had breakfasts on the back deck and took advantage of the gas grill.
Great location. 3 minute walk to two wonderful fish markets, 5 minute walks to beach, to great sunset viewings, to one of the Vineyard's iconic restaurants. Barbara and John are most gracious hosts! Thanks for a wonderful week!

A classic vacation cottage
There are three reasons to select Tilton House. First is the cottage itself which is a unique piece of Vineyard history, having been moved to its present location from Chilmark Brick Yard by oxen cart. It is a classic vacation cottage, well appointed and equipped -- especially the kitchen. Second is the location. The cottage provides a wonderful view of Menemsha harbor with its fishing boats, Dutcher's Dock with its seafood markets selling both fresh and ready-to-eat seafoods, the wetlands leading down to the beach and Vineyard Sound, and the Elizabeth Islands. The sunsets viewed from the beach are spectacular. The Chilmark area is bucolic, a distinct contrast with Edgartown and Vineyard Haven. The third reason to select Tilton Housing is the landlords. They are friendly and helpful but never intrusive.

About the host
Hosted by Barbara Armstrong
My family has been on the island since the 1600s. My father and grandfather were commercial fisherman out of Menemsha Harbor. Some of the houses that we rent were old fishing shanties that were converted to summer cottages.
Why they chose this property
This house was transported from the Brickyard in Chilmark to it's current location by oxen and cart. My great grandparents lived there. After their death in the 1920s the house was made into a rental home.
What makes this property unique
This house is in the center of the village of Menemsha...fresh fish, strolling on the dock, restaurants, front view seats to a beautiful sunset.
