The place was fine, clean, nice enough. But the owners are horrible!
We cleared bringing our Great Dane with us before we booked the house, with both owners (Doug and Julie). My girlfriend & I are both professional dog handlers; we told them clearly that, while our dog was friendly, we would be keeping him on a leash, and away from other animals on site, since he's still learning how to socialize with new dogs. I even sent them pictures of him hiking and playing with his pack.
The morning after our first night, we were outside having coffee, relaxing. Their dog, Atlas, (apparently being watched by a friend, not the VRBO owners, who we never physically met), wandered over to us, off-leash, to say hi. Our dog checked him out, and started to play with him, but Atlas pulled away. Our dog, being on-leash, got frustrated, and barked. He's a 155lb Great Dane, so his bark was loud.
Their friend never got up to intervene, just sat on their deck, watching us from a distance. Atlas walked away, we told the person we were sorry, and explained the situation, that it wasn't at all anything to worry about, but we'd still keep the dogs apart to be safe. A few minutes later, Atlas returned, unphased, and our dog was actually getting more comfortable with him. We actually figured they'd be playing soon enough.
I went inside, and at 8:12am, Julie calls me up, demanding we leave immediately. "You need to be out of the house in 30 minutes!" She said something vague about "the dog incident," so I asked her to explain. "I don't need to explain myself to you," she said, and again demanded we leave immediately.
We had been planning this vacation for a while. I took off work for it. And it was impossible to find lodging with a large dog at that point, on a Saturday morning...so we ended up having to drive back to LA a day early.
I've demanded a full refund from VRBO, but BE WARNED ABOUT THESE HOSTS! They are not to be trusted!
