About this property

Gorgeous, Fully Renovated Town Home in Tuscan Town of Cetona

The property owners are an engineer and a journalist. The property was restructured by two highly respected Roman architects, who painstakingly completed a restoration (in 2009) of this beautiful & unique town-home in the medieval Tuscan hillside town of Cetona (ca 900 AD). The blend of location (in fabulous southern Tuscany and in a city also chosen by the Italian designer Valentino for his country villa) and style (a rare and exceedingly tasteful blend of ancient and modern) make this a perfect retreat for the discerning traveler. The house is centrally located near Cetona’s main piazza, with its shops, stores, cafes and restaurants all within easy walking distance. The living room, dining room, bathroom and kitchen (fully equipped) are located on the ground floor. Also on the ground floor you will find a portion of the renovated tunnel that burrows through the Cetona hillside. During the renovation, the architects decided to wall off their portion of the tunnel for future use as a large wine cellar (see pictures). On the second floor you will find the master bedroom with a canopy bed, a full private bath with a modern bathtub carved into the rock, and an additional bedroom with two beds (all new mattresses, furniture and appliances throughout the home). Outside the front door, there is a small porch with a table and chairs where you can enjoy breakfast or a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

Picturesque Cetona is located in the Chianti region of Tuscany, in the province of Siena. Since the 1960s, Cetona has been a haunt of 'VIPs' who have bought and renovated farm properties in and around the city. There is much to do in and around the immediate area of Cetona. Only a short drive away, art lovers will find some of the most exceptional galleries and museums in the world. In the nearby towns of Chiusi, Città della Pieve, Montepulciano, Pienza, Cortona, Perugia, Arezzo, Assis, Orvieto and Siena, history has left treasures from the time of Etruscans to the Reanaissance. And don't forget that from Cetona you can easily reach, by motor way in a little over an hour’s time, both Florence and Rome

Hikers, Riders, Bicyclists and Nature lovers will find footpaths and country roads that wind through hillsides and vineyards where they will discover hidden corners and breathtaking views. If it's sports you're after, there are sporting facilities in Cetona and surroundings. Nearby Trasimeno Lake offers a variety of water sports and don’t miss the ancient Roman baths at San Casciano, Bagno Vignoni and San Filippo, where you can take the therapeutic baths year-round in the natural hot water springs.

In the area around Cetona one of the oldest human settlements of central Italy has been discovered which goes back over 40,000 years and the remains of which can be seen in the delightful archeological park of Belverde and the 25 prehistoric caves. The finds are conserved in the museum devoted to the prehistoric period of Mount Cetona located on the ground floor of Cetona’s Town Hall, a museum which the experts have defined as 'didactically perfect'.??

Only one caution
The location is excellent and the apartment is handsome and as described except for one tiny detail: the bed in the second bedroom is almost five feet above the floor, accessed by a tiny wooden ladder like those found in small children's bunk beds. I am almost 80 years old, and I'm not going to tell you my weight, but be forewarned: it was a challenge. One in our party found a sturdy aluminum ladder in the cave, and I very carefully climbed up and down several times a night for two weeks. The other caution is that if the apartment has been closed for a while, it is quite damp; a session with the heat on (it works well) took care of that. The apartment was very clean, and a neighbor came in several times to keep it that way and to provide fresh linens. Cetona really deserves its designation as one of Italy's loveliest 'borghi.' Although I enjoyed touring around Tuscany from its central location, I would have been content just to stay there and feel Italy around me.

Loved this character home!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! We had everything we needed there. It had little extras that made it so nice... robes, extra bedding, amenities to cook. We enjoyed our dinners and the town, from here it was a base for us to see lots of Tuscany. Besides the house feeling like home we also enjoyed the neighbors and housekeeper. For us it was perfect as we liked the quietness after staying in Naples... absolutely no complaints.

Architecture masterpiece
This place has everything you would want in a Tuscany stay. Gorgeous little village with several great restaurants, outstanding wine bar and ideal location to explore around. The apartment itself is even better than it shows in pictures. Two great living spaces to hang out not to mention the caves. The bedrooms are nice sized as is the bathroom. I would highly recommend this place for all the reasons stated and more.

Wonderful property!
Beautiful property in great location. We (family of five, with two children 18+) stayed for 6 nights and did day trips to Siena, Assisi, Florence, and Venice from this location. Also enjoyed the local scenery, restaurants, market, stores, and gelato! Wonderful city, would love to stay again and explore Cetona more! Bianca was super helpful with check in and any other questions we had during our stay!

A beautiful piece of paradise
Our stay in Cetona was superb! The house is exactly as described - beautifully appointed and very comfortable. We didn't meet Marco or Vanna as they were in Rome, but Bianca who looked after the property was delightful - nothing was too much trouble and she got back to us very quickly if we had any queries. Her mother Marcella lives opposite and was equally as friendly and helpful. Cetona is a fantastic village - we could get everything we needed within the town and it was fantastic to wander down to Piazza Geribaldi in the afternoons and sit and have a drink whilst watching the local people going about their business. The local people were also very friendly and accommodating of our very limited Italian. There are so many beautiful little towns in close proximity - we spent each day driving a few kilometres to discover yet another quaint and special little town - it was exactly what we wanted for our holiday. I would highly recommend both the property and the town.

This was the perfect property in the perfect location in Tuscany
La Macina - The house lived up to its billing and more. The set-up was perfect and the features in the house showed that a great deal of care had gone into its design. How may houses boast their own tunnel, or a brick lined arched ceiling in the kitchen. The house had a nice sized kitchen with just about everything you would need, and a very comfortable living room that was perfect for hanging out. The sleeping accommodation was ideal for three people and the rock faced bathtub was an interesting feature. We could not have asked for more from the house accommodations. Cetona was the perfect Tuscan hill town. Easily accessible by car. You can literally drive right up to the house to drop off your bags, as long as you are prepared to back all the way down again. The remote parking was very convenient and unlike many of the hill towns it was not a steep walk into the town. The parking lot was very close. The town itself is small but it has all the stores you need for daily shopping. Fresh bread everyday. Cheese tasting before you buy. Literally two liquor stores. A place for your morning coffee in the Square, and two very good restaurants. All within a two minute walk. Being able to walk to an excellent restaurant after a days touring was why we located here. Even though Cetona is not centrally placed in Tuscany, driving distances are short, and in the case of Florence there is a train station within 15 minutes drive. We highly recommend La Macina and Cetona.

Zauberhafter Urlaub in zentraler Lage

Arrivederci a Cetino. Saluti da Simone, Julian e Mike. Viva l‘Italia.

Fantastic Place to Stay In Cetona
What a wonderful place to stay in beautiful Cetona. The place was tastefully renovated and modernized, good kitchen, lovely living room, family room with cave, nice bathroom downstairs and upstairs, with two good bedrooms. We slept soundly in the quiet and comfortable surroundings. The housekeeper was close by and very helpful when we needed anything. We were a few steps away from the large square where people gathered and where there are some good grocery shops, bakery and restaurants. A few weeks prior to our arrival Marco sent us some great information regarding the house, Cetona and suggestions for trips and places to visit. This information was accurate and very helpful. One suggestion I have is to visit Suzie's Yard. We had a wonderful visit with Suzie and her family and a wonderful lunch. Google it to get more information. We rented a car and did numerous day trips during our 16 night stay. We also took a train to Florence which worked out really well. If you want an authentic Tuscan experience and great value, I highly recommend this place.

Cetona Grotto Apartment
We spent a very pleasant week in this authentic and unique Cetona Grotto Apartment. It is located behind the main city square, Piazza Garibaldi, within walking distance to a bakery, grocery, wine shop, pharmacy and other shops run by unusually charming and friendly people who always greeted us with a pleasant smile. There are two nice restaurants on the square, Nilo and Osteria del Merlo which offered delicious Tuscan meals. We enjoyed it very much! We also received wonderful service at the local hairdresser! Patricia and her husband treated us as friends and not as customers and they really did wonderful jobs! The location of Cetona was great for our daily excursions to neighboring and attractive villages such as Montepulciano and others. We visited the pearl of Umbria, Assisi which we recommend greatly. The people of Cetona are very friendly and helpful and they are eager to please on any occasion. In regards to parking the car, it was easy enough to park in the free public parking not far from the square, however it was a bit of a challenge to unload/load the car upon our arrival and departure. The apartment is nicely decorated and it is fascinating and special. There is a private cave in the apartment creating an unusual atmosphere, touch of history, unreal! We found it beautiful and mysterious. We were 4 adults in our 60's. The second bedroom was a bit of a challenge, as the bed was elevated and required a bit of climbing. The kitchen was generally well equipped, however it was missing a kettle for making tea which we all enjoy every day. Regrettably we didn't meet Marco and Vanna and it was difficult to communicate with the neighbours designated to help us in case of need. Overall our stay in Cetona was very pleasant and an unforgettable experience and we recommend it highly.

Traumhaftes, romantisches Ferienhaus in Cetona

Amazing and wonderful
Overall just a wonderful experience, with the kitchen wonderfully laid out and with a lot of basics available. A few plastic drinking cups would be handy, but the coffee made up for this. The stairs and second bedroom mean you ought to be handy with climbs, but Tuscany is filled with hills and climbs, and every part of it worth it. There's a wonderful swimming area 10 min by car and Cetona is a wonderful staging place for all of central and northern Italy. The host was so nice and easy to reach. We loved it!

This home in Cetona in the heart of Tuscany is Awesome
We absolutely loved this unique and authentic, enchanting home. Its ambience is hard to describe other than to say I've never stayed in a more fascinating place. The rocks, caves and bath inside the residence are like no other. The owner has created an atmosphere of comfort down to the Sky satellite. The bakery, restaurants and closeness to other special places to visit I can highly recommend. They live in a different time concept--eat lunch from 12 to 3 PM and don't expect any place to open until 7:30 PM. We went to a Medieval Festival, Suzie's Yard for a private luncheon and the thermal baths in a neighboring town. Enjoy!!!

Wonderful week in Cetona!
When I first stood in the doorway of this beautiful house in Cetona, I had to pinch myself. Finally I was actually standing in this amazing place I'd been looking at in pictures for months. Marco's place is absolutely beautiful. The style and design is perfect in every detail, the architectural renovation was carried out splendidly, and you really do have your very own cave at the back of the side sitting room. Marco was so helpful and responsive, from the beginning of my inquiries to the last day when I emailed to ask directions to the nearest gas station for our departure. His daughter met us in Rome to give us the keys and detailed directions, and all of our interactions with both her and Marco have been friendly and helpful. We stayed for a week in Cetona, a wonderful small town with its centuries of history and modern life centered around the main square, the Piazza Garibaldi. We chose this house in part because of the convenience and charm of being able to walk to shops and restaurants, and we especially enjoyed interacting with the kind and friendly people who live there. In a minute we could walk to a wonderful bakery, a deli, a wine shop, a green grocer, other shops, and a larger grocery store up on the main road. We enjoyed delicious meals at the two excellent restaurants just steps from the house, the Ristorante da Nilo and the Osteria del Merlo. Cafe Sport, between the two restaurants, serves up delicious gelato, coffees, and wine by the glass. Cetona is also a great jumping off place to visit the Tuscan hill towns and thermal mineral baths (hot springs). We drove to Siena, Pienza, Montepulciano, and Chianciano, and the Fonteverde spa in San Casciano during our stay. I only wish we'd had more time here, as Umbria is right next door and we never did venture there, nor did we fully explore the small towns scattered around the countryside. We would definitely stay here again, in a heartbeat, and we'd recommend this place to anyone looking to step off the wheel and breathe in the beauty of rural Tuscany for a while. I totally agree with the previous reviewer who stated that you can have expectations as high as you can imagine, and that you will exceed them here. Thanks for everything, Marco, we hope to be your guests again someday! Sonja and Doug

The Center of a Dream Come True!
When you travel to Cetona, have expectations. Have wonderfully enthusiastic expectations. As grand as you want...because you will exceed them. Beginning with your planning communication with your hosts. Gracious, caring and sincere. When you meet them, you are welcomed as family! Your stay is in a townhouse that you immediately warm to. All that you require, minus the groceries, are there if you choose to 'live there' during your stay. We had much to see in Italy. No matter where we traveled, we returned 'home' to Cetona. Florence, Assissi, Saturnia, southeast of Rome. The autostrada always returned us to Cetona for the evening. Our logistics center was Chiusi. Groceries, street markets and train station. Even though we had a rental car, the train must be part of your experience. You immediately recognize the character of Cetona. Enjoy the charm, history, and the people. Please enjoy the people! Please take the time to 'breathe in the piazza'. Take part in any and all activities. Do not worry about a language barrier. Friendship speaks all languages. If you are considering an adventure to Tuscany, consider Cetona. Once you realize that Cetona is where you would like to stay. The choice is very easy. Contact Marco and Vanna.

Great, great, great!
My wife and I stayed here during the third week of our Italy anniversary trip. What a fantastic apartment. Marco and his wife greeted us personally at the apartment and went over all the details with us. After staying in two other apartments further north, this one, on the ground floor, was a welcome change from having to climb two or three flights of stairs as we did at the other two places. the apartment felt like home to us, and we enjoyed its close proximity to the central piazza, where it was so relaxing to sit for a couple of hours in the afternoon and watch the daily life unfold before our eyes. Great apartment, great location, and a wonderful experience. Two 55+ travelers from New Hampshire, USA

Beautiful apartment in rural Tuscany
This apartment was truly beautiful. There was such craftmenship, especially in the living room, kitchen, and wine cellar. The location of Cetona was ideal for touring southeastern Tuscany (lots of great attractions within an hour's drive). A close railstation with free overnight parking was convenient for trips to Rome. The housekeeper was attentive and accomodating as well. The only negative remarks would be the unbearable heat upstairs and parking. There was a portable A/C unit, but it was extrememely heavy and difficult to move up stairs. Also, there was no parking at the apartment; parking was outside of the town square, which made grocery trips inconvenient.
