About this property

Stargaze & relax at Whispering Pines Farmhouse near the Elroy-Sparta Bike Trail

Originally a log cabin, the house has two additions and underwent significant remodeling in the winter of 2019-20 when it was purchased by the current owners. As a part of the extensive Devil’s Hole Ranch, this 120-acre parcel is planted in corn.
The fenced-in in backyard, fire-pit, grilling area, pine grove, meadows, & woods are family-friendly. Songbirds abound! Enjoy a stay-cation or work from home with16 Mbps high-speed internet while enjoying rural living. Biking, canoeing, hiking, (fishing at nearby Lake McCrary) & visiting Amish are popular pastimes. Near Ft. McCoy, military discount. Swimming pools, golf, shopping, medical facilities and more are available in the nearby cities of Tomah and Sparta.
The space:
Secluded, private, and spacious, the farmhouse can accommodate up to10 people. Children and pets are very welcome, but need to be attended while outside.
The two downstairs bedrooms are newly remodeled and have large closets. The upstairs main bedroom has a new private bathroom and a large walk-in closet (with a fainting couch and a window, it is listed as the 4th bedroom). The living room is a north side addition with two couches plus a queen futon couch. There is a formal dining area, downstairs full bathroom, utility sink, laundry area, attached "mini" green house, enclosed back porch, dedicated work space, and a large kitchen. The kitchen has a "Hoosier" style unit with open shelves for guests to store food items that they bring. The refrigerator is spacious and has a freezer. There is a counter top microwave. There are dishes, cups, wine glasses, utensils, flatware, as well as pots and pans, a cookie sheet and some baking dishware. A toaster, electric griddle, blender, and coffeemaker (with coffee and filters) is provided.
The new self igniting gas grill with grilling utensils and hot pads is located on a cement pad outside the back door. There are folding camp chairs to use in the spacious backyard around the fire-pit. Local firewood is provided. For people with mobility issues, the back porch door provides easier access to the house than the front door, which is on the deck.
Guest access:
The property is easily accessible from Tomah, Sparta, or the village of Norwalk. Cty. Hwy. T north of Norwalk has marvelous views and leads to Jigsaw Road, which is a dead-end road. The road sign for Jigsaw is missing, so using GPS is a good idea, so you don't miss it! Drive .4 miles on Jigsaw to Jean Avenue, which is on the right. 4-wheel drive is not necessary as the township maintains Jean Avenue, which leads directly to the house. There is adequate parking for several vehicles as the driveway circles the old windmill.

Other things to note:
The farmstead also has a silo, barn, shed, and other out buildings. A second house on the property has recently been bulldozer (winter of 2022), and the remaining site is off limits to guests.
Guests should not enter the old barn, machine shed, or other buildings on the property.
However, there are acres of meadows and woods along with a large fenced yard and neat pine grove, all awaiting exploration!
The ranch has paid hunting leases for deer and turkey season, so the woods would not be suitable for hiking during this time of year. There may be tractors and farm machinery planting and harvesting corn during the growing season in the corn fields acreage.

Great stay
The house worked out very well for 4 hunters in town for deer hunting. As others have mentioned, the 4th bedroom is really a place for a small child but everything else was great. Lots of room to spread out. Paula was excellent in keeping in touch. Would stay again.

Families gathering for canoeing and 50th birthday celebration
The Farmhouse perfect for our group. It was in the country without close neighbors so we could make noise, talk loud and let the kids be kids. The house felt comfy and welcoming. It is not modern and perfect, it is a home that you can use for a while and gather and live in. It smelled clean and fresh and welcoming when we got there. We had 6 adults and 2 teenagers and an old beagle dog in our group. Everybody had a bed or room or space and had a great weekend. We went canoeing on the kickapoo river and celebrated my sister's 50th birthday. The kitchen is big enough to cook in and the dining table was big enough for our group of 8. The house has a lot of charcter and historic charm. 2 full bathrooms were great for us to clean up after canoeing and we had plenty of hot water after a cool day on the river. The host was very responsive. From the time of booking when the host offered to have the futon made up into a bed in the living room before our arrival to support during our stay, the host was helpful and quick to respond. WiFi for teenagers and TV worked just fine, although we kind of discouraged their use during our family gathering weekend. I highly recommend this place for a group to come together for some quality family time.

Nice property
Great farmhouse with multiple living areas and beds for my family of 4 and another friend's family of 4 to be together or spread out, and enjoy the pleasures of the countryside. We enjoyed the firepit in the backyard, and the kitchen with various gadgets and servingware to suit our needs. It was cool to see a few original walls to a very old home that was updated.

I opened two vacation rental properties in 2021 after purchasing them to add acreage to our historic Devil's Hole Ranch (you can find it with an internet search). Whispering Pines is close to Ft. McCoy and I do accept long term stays with a significant monthly discount. I prefer to do month-to-month stays from January-April, but I have has people stay longer. We are closely linked to Ft. McCoy as our son is a Captain in the US Army and works at the fort.
My husband and I love our "ranch" way of life and the proximity to our children and grandchildren. I enjoy hosting guests from all walks of life!
We live in a newer home that we designed and had built in rural Norwalk, WI not too far from our vacation rentals. We are always available to our guests to answer questions and concerns or do problem solving.
I also manage cattle drive clinics and events at the ranch along with managing long term rental properties (farmhouses) located on the ranch. Our 19 grandchildren all live nearby. I was a drama, speech and English teacher. I have a ranch website and listings for Whispering Pines Farmhouse Vacation Stay and Long-term Rental and my spacious and secluded listing called New Haven Manor Vacation Stay and event Venue on FB.

I

Why they chose this property

We bought this farm in 2019 for the crop land. It is planted into corn. It also has woods, nature trails and a mature pine grove near the house. After a six months of extensive renovation of the house, we rented the house to a family for a year. In March of 2021, we bought another property that had an existing vacation rental property. That experience helped us decide to turn the rental house into a second vacation rental property which I opened on June 11, 2021. I have found being a host to be very enjoyable. All of my guest both long and short term have been wonderful. I haven't had any damage beyond normal wear and tear. The house was so much fun to decorate and the guests usually comment on how cozy and inviting it is.

What makes this property unique

This vacation rental has a fantastic location! It's rural, but near so many fun things to do year round. Because it's secluded and quite, it's perfect for a nature retreat, romantic weekend, family reunion, friends trip, or work away from home stay. My guests have come to the area for softball tournaments in Sparta, military deployment (3 months), volunteer work at Ft. McCoy (2 weeks), hunting on Ft. McCoy land, ATV riding on all the county roads, bike riding the Sparta-Elroy trail, canoeing the Kickapoo River, and visiting the local Amish community to shop...plus so much more. It's near the village of Norwalk, town of Cashton, and cities of Sparta and Tomah.
