The house is beautiful on the inside and situated in the quiet woods. The wood burning stove was a nice touch as was the bowl of snacks we devoured on our arrival. We slept in on Saturday and took in some local wineries. We hope to return when the weather is warmer to take advantage of the cozy screened in deck. This place is perfect for a weekend getaway. Thank you!
We had a fantastic stay. The house is cute and cozy. It was well appointed and had everything we could have wanted. Bed was super comfortable! We will happily stay there again.
We stayed as a family of 4 (2 teens and 2 adults) to hike Old Rag as our autumn get away. The cottage is deep in the woods with plenty of wildlife and wilderness sounds. Really peaceful location to break away from the city life. The house was sparkling clean, linens and towel white and fresh. You will find all basic necessities you may need for a short stay. Cozy screened porch in the back was perfect for feeling the autumn air, sip some wine and just listen to the wilderness. We also made a visit to the nearby winery.
Definitely recommend this place if plan to hike Shenandoah, or just break away from city life.
We very much enjoyed our time at this very secluded house with all the amenities we needed plus more. Very nice owners that eeee extremely responsive and house was perfect fir two couples — not a lot of close food places — so get groceries before getting there — but activities were reasonable and drives were nice — extremely beautiful part of the country — we learned a lot on colonial history, saw a great caverns (Luray) and a wonderful hike in Shenandoah national forest which is within minutes away — just wish we would have had longer!!
I can't say enough about the wonderful communication and helpfulness of Ann. The home is remote and so quiet yet a short drive from a few hikes and wineries. It was a drive to SNP or the AT but worth doing. The house had everything we needed and we had a great stay.
It was exactly as pictured but even more charming in person. The owners were so responsive and they even had the fire place full of kindling and wood and ready to fire up. Bottles of water in the fridge and absolutely everything we needed.
This property was gorgeous inside and out. The land, the furnishings, all the amenities. Not one complaint. We all loved it and had a wonderful, relaxing time! Thank you for sharing the beauty of your lovely home!!
My husband and I enjoyed our anniversary weekend at Ann & Bill's lovely mountain home. It was THE perfect location for exactly what we wanted to do... we hiked Old Rag & White Oak Canyon trails, tasted delicious wine at DuCard Winery right down the street (and we don't usually care for VA wine... DuCard was delish!) we made a fire in the fire pit and gazed at the stars without light pollution getting in our way--it was amazing! The house is very private and clean. We so appreciated the wood burning stove in the family room the night we ordered pizza from Rappahannock Pizza Kitchen (RPK) and cozied up inside while it rained. The Peets Keurig cups made our mornings, as did the snacks we took on our hikes! We would absolutely encourage our friends and family to spend a relaxing weekend in Etlan, VA, away from the busyness of life at home. It was also fun going to Graves Mountain Lodge on our way home to see where I grew up having Sunday lunches of fried chicken, and driving over the Rose River where my daughter went swimming once (as a happy accident)! Thank you, Bill & Ann, for all of your great advice and directions to the home!
This property was outstanding. The check in process and directions to the property were made incredibly simple. You’re at the end of a road and have the whole property and area to yourself. Very private, quiet, and secluded. The fire pit was perfect and the house spacious and incredibly clean. They have everything you need there including maps and suggestions for the surrounding area. Beds are super comfy too!! High highly recommend. We look forward to returning soon!
We are so glad we found this house! It was in a perfect spot to easily get to the entrances to Shenandoah National Park (about 40 mins away) and only minutes to a beautiful hike to a waterfall. The house was super clean and my teenagers loved the snacks that were left out on the table for us. Other nice touches: coffee for the Keurig, sugar, creamer, fixins to make S'mores, extra bottled water, and even wood to get an outdoor firepit going. The owners were great with communication - and as others have said, definitely follow the owners' directions to get to the house. We brought our dog and found a number of dog friendly restaurants and wineries, too. The hammock chair on the screened in porch is awesome and the porch is also a great place to sit in the morning with coffee and listen to the birds. Thanks for a great day at your home!
Fantastic location. No neighbors. Peace, quiet and lots of trees. Beautiful house. Very inviting open floor plan. Beautiful kitchen with new (I think) appliances. Comfortable seating area with nice tv. Spacious bed and bathrooms. Very comfortable beds. Immaculate. Snacks on the table and cold water in the frig for us when we got there. Great screened in porch. When we arrived, we opened the front door and our dog walked straight through to the screened-in porch door and stood there waiting to go out. His favorite place and mine. Lots of things to do and great places to eat within easy drives. Thank you Bill and Ann.
We really enjoyed our stay here, this place was definitely somewhat "off the grid" and tricky to get to, but worth it! Nothing but peace and quiet and fresh mountain air, the screened in back porch is great for just relaxing and listening to nature. It has a nice wood stove for cool nights that the mountain air brings. I really liked the open floor plan when you enter. It's only about 15 minutes away from whiteoak canyon falls trail/ cedar falls trail which is a great convenience. My biggest complaint would be the slow internet, which makes streaming almost impossible and navigating apps on your phone slow, but that is a minor problem.
Very private location in a beautiful area near Shenandoah National Park. The house was spotlessly clean, and well equipped. Great views of the woods with many bird sightings. Ann shared all the info we needed for a comfortable stay. We really enjoyed our visit.
My husband and I spent the weekend of President's Day at Ann and Bill's Mountain Retreat to celebrate my birthday. Ann was an absolute delight to communicate with and we actually got to meet she and Bill as we were leaving.
The house is neat as a pin, very clean with a well-equipped kitchen and is just like it appears in the photos.
The bed we slept in was extremely comfortable, for our taste and with help from the provided instructions we were able to navigate the TV/cable/Amazon Fire Stick.
We took advantage of many of the "suggested local attractions" with trips to DuCard winery (highly recommend!!), shopping in Sperryville and a hike up to the falls in White Oak Canyon.
All in all, it was a wonderful weekend and we wouldn't hesitate to go back!
Note: Do follow Ann's directions carefully at the end as it can be a little confusing.
House is clean, comfortable and easy to find. Many things to see, drink and eat. We used to live in the area and spent time visiting friends. Stopped by Yoders, had lunch at Bavarian Chef, and Frost's in Culpeper. Great location for quick get away weekend.
We stayed at this home for a wedding in Etlan. It was a great location to the venues.
The home is clean and described accurately on the listing. The hosts were kind to provide snacks, waters, coffee and creamer for us upon our arrival. There were also lots of soaps and bathroom amenities provided.
The TV options were good and the memory foam mattress was lovely with fleece blankets!
We would definitely stay here again!
A friend and I used this lovely house as a home base for a sunrise hike of Old Rag Mountain. Being just a 20 minute drive from the trail head was excellent and the property itself was a wonderful place to relax and rest after our adventures. The set up is perfect for two adults that are not a couple, two couples, or a family with older kids as there are two bedrooms off of a main, shared, space and each has its own bathroom with a shower. Directions were on point and the seclusion was a welcome respite and just what we wanted.
This property is a most delightful place to stay that is spacious, quiet, clean and comfortable. Would easily accommodate two couples or a small family. My husband and I visit Madison county annually to visit family and are looking forward to staying here again in the future.
The house is wonderful. I marked 4 stars on location because it is remote - roads can be tricky (steep gravel) and Wi-Fi can be spotty. Not big deals for us but may be for others. Ann provided great instructions and warned about the roads (which are doable in a sedan) so we knew what to expect.
It was a perfect property for us - thanks, Ann!
Really enjoyed our 9 days at Bill and Ann's property. Very good communication from them before and throughout stay. Incredibly clean and perfectly furnished house. I brought some cooking supplies with us (I'm particular about knives and that sort of thing) but I needn't have done as there was everything that I'd have needed already supplied. Loved watching the wildlife from the front porch and the back shaded porch was where we spent a LOT of time. Close to White Oak and Old Rag trailheads. Glad we had an suv for the road up to the house but the drive there was worth it for the serenity!
The home was beautiful, clean and nicely furnished. We enjoyed sitting out in the screened in porch as well as the front porch on the rocking chairs. The home was supplied with all of the kitchen and bathroom essentials. The hosts were always available if we needed them. Wonderful experience. Would definitely recommend.
The house was very clean and comfortable.
The screened porch was the best and we enjoyed sitting in the porch and watching the birds.
Would love to visit again.
