About this property

Glamping with sheep in a renovated 1972 Ace camper on 48 acres

Introducing Gertrude! This sweet 1972 Ace Camper is fully renovated and thoughtfully outfitted: just the thing for a simple stay in nature at Hurricane Hill, our beautiful, 48-acre historic fiber farm. Lounge in the the hammock, put your feet up around the fire pit, clean up in the outdoor shower, grill on the Weber and dance to our curated collection of 70's hits (or stream your own favorites) ....then sleep like a baby. The camper and its "yard" are both well thought through, so you will be glamping more than camping and we are nearby if you need anything at all to make your stay better. Despite our seclusion, we are actually really close to 95, 295, TF Green Airport and, of course, the ever compelling City of Providence. We are so excited to add Gertrude to our farm stay offerings! Please see our other on-farm listing to find out how we host (since we don't have any reviews of Gertrude yet). PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE A 4 NIGHT MAXIMUM STAY

Delighted to find Gertrude available the same night as extended family rented a cottage on the same property through Air B&B. Drake and Wright worked with us to manage our delayed check-in.

Gertrude was fantastic!
Cute glamper on a very beautiful farm property. The owners were so lovely! We loved the outdoor shower with on-demand hot water, the solo stove for evening campfires, and camper itself was cozy and comfortable. We enjoyed the whole experience very much. During the day, we went into providence for excellent dining and shopping. Then, returned to Gertrude to relax and unwind. The farm was so picturesque and there were lovely walking trails. We loved every minute and will definitely book again. Highly recommend!

The hosts are very friendly. Unfortunately they didn’t receive our reservation (technology isn’t perfect) but they immediately accommodated us. We only have a one night reservation but we would definitely come back again.

I recently saw and chose this place for a business trip - and I can safely say there were no regrets. Gertrude is in superb condition and continues to be a quiet and cozy oasis for anyone who decides to book. In my daily life I'm often in the bustle of everything and everyone and this place was the perfect getaway from all of it. While I saw the hosts in quick and nice passings, you really do feel like you're on your own. The sheep in the field next door made every day better....same goes for the wild bunnies roaming about. 20/10!

Beautiful location, your only neighbors are sheep and chickens. The camper was clean, and comfortable. The hosts were nice and easy to communicate with they even had a little shop with honey, soap and yarn. We were only there for a night but we wished we could have stayed longer.

Quaint
Our host met us at the gate and showed us everything we needed. The outdoor shower has hot water on demand and is just like showering indoors (but more fun)! The location of the trailer is a private area with only sheep as neighbors. I will recommend this location to any group of one or two (too small for larger groups)

If you think you will like it, you'll love it!
If you think you will like this property, you will love it! The location is private and beautiful, the camper is clean and fun! There are many nice touches to make your stay even more comfortable (awesome towels, coffee and tea, a bit of wood for the easy-to-build fire). The host is very responsive and accommodating, the farm is beautiful, the privy is surprisingly charming (!), and the outdoor shower is sublime. Next time we'll stay longer.

Fun to go Camping!!
I had a wonderful time relaxing and enjoying the beauty of this farm. Gertrude’s accommodations were cozy, comfortable and more than adequate. I had plenty of room for things in the fridge and freezer. It was marvelous to sleep in such peace and wake to roosters. The gardens are lush, the scenery just magical. Drake is the most wonderful and accommodating host. I can’t say enough about her friendliness and kind nature. And their canine ambassador, Rosie is so sweet. I really felt at home there. I will be back again when I need to escape life and rest. We are also planning for girls’ weekend in the cottage soon. Perhaps on the fall as the leaves are turning. I am sure that will be stunning to see. I highly recommend this host and the sweet vintage camper.

Charming and rustic stay on gorgeous property
It was fun to get back to basics and enjoy nature. Gladys is simply and attractively outfitted, and we had a great time checking out the beautiful garden; saying hi to the animals; and taking a leisurely morning walk around the farm with a cup of coffee in hand. Hurricane Hill Farm is a very special property, and it was a privilege to experience it!

About the host

Host profile image
Hi, I am Drake - I own and manage Hurricane Hill Farm with my husband, artist Wright Deter. We love hosting and have been doing so for a number of years now-first with our cottage and most recently with our vintage camper. We also love sharing our 48 acre, historic, conservation fiber farm with guests-our farm is too lovely to keep just to ourselves.

I'm an archaeologist/anthropologist by training-my focus was on race, gender and identity in the ante-and post-bellum South. I'm also a former non-profit leader in the arts and humanities. These days, I'm dedicated to restoring our farm to its rightful place-something now referred to as "re-wilding." Ask me about it!

Why they chose this property

Our farm sits on the land of the Narragansett who chose our area for its waterways and other natural resources. Our acreage was first domesticated by an 18th century family named Baker-after the land was taken from its indigenous people. At one time the Baker Farm was hundreds of acres-today we own 48 of these original acres, some of it traversed by an underground waterline that takes water to Providence. Other acreage was taken for highway construction (best witnessed by the inaccessible third of an acre I own on the other side of 295!). We bought this land in 2014 and have dedicated ourselves to its care and restoration. Staying here is an opportunity to exhale-to hear the birdsong and the coyotes' calls, to pause and consider how we all might best care for the world around us.
