About this property

La Colina de Carolina

This morning the sun rose over the ocean in a blaze of colors. Hundreds of parakeets, budgies and parrots flocked in the trees around the house, chirping, warbling and squawking about their day. As I got up to pour more coffee, the roar of a howler monkey let me know that one of the local monkey troupes was stopping by for a visit. Tonight I’ll sit on the veranda with friends, talking, laughing and watching as the full moon rises over the water painting a broad, silver path across the ocean under a sea of stars.

BRAND NEW HUGE, INFINITY VISTA POOL WITH STAR-GAZING DECK !!

This is the sort of experience that you can expect every day at the tropical paradise called La Colina de Carolina. Situated atop a steep bluff, it has a great vista of the Montezuma area; an elevated, stunningly majestic view of the sea. Beautifully constructed of pressure treated pine, every effort has been made to minimize construction impact on the surroundings.

La Colina de Carolina is only a 10-15 minute walk to Montezuma, making beaches, shopping, restaurants, dancing and even a game of pool easily accessible. However, it is far enough removed from the town to provide escape from the late-night revelry of the Montezuma tourist scene if you would rather relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of a tropical night under the stars. A private entrance together with its remote location and on-site caretaker provide you and your family or guests with total security. A car is not necessary to stay at La Colina de Carolina.

Upon arrival you will find a friendly property manager and caretaker waiting to show you around the property, demonstrate how to use the security devices such as the steel shutter doors and answer any questions that you may have. To get your first full day off to a great start, we are happy to make sure that the kitchen has coffee and milk waiting for you. We also offer free assistance with the procurement of any unusual products and services plus booking or arranging any activities or outings that you might wish to take part in.

The house has a full kitchen, large living area and a broad deck that wraps around two sides of the house and offers an excellent view of the sea. The elevated, sea-side location means constant breezes off of the water while our high ceilings, fans and huge windows and double doors all combine to keep the days cooler. Hand made wooden furniture, hammocks, optional meal and beverage services complete the picture of comfortable, tropical relaxation.

As mentioned we are happy to assist you in booking activities including:
Excursions to the Montezuma Cascades, Canopy and Cloud Forest tours with zip lines, day trips to Isla de Tortuga, (Turtle Island,) for snorkeling, volleyball and picnicking, golfing, surf lessons, shore and/or deep-sea fishing, sea kayaking, horseback rides on the beach and more.

Housekeeping is included for stays of 2 weeks or longer. We also offer an array of inexpensive services such as daily house keeping and laundry for those wishing to combine the jungle experience with more pampered living.

These services, as well as any activities booked on your behalf, must be paid when booked. Contact us for a quote on a complete vacation.

La Colina de Carolina is the perfect blend of comfort and tropical seclusion whether you want to disappear for a few days into lovely views, tropical bird songs and visits from the local troops of monkeys, travel throughout the area on adventurous day trips, spend some hot nights with the fire spinners and salsa dancers in Montezuma, relax and enjoy some pampered comfort, or a little bit of all of them. In the five years since it has been available to the public for rent, there has not been a single renter who hasn’t said that they’d return in a heartbeat.

Thank you for your interest, we look forward to hosting you.

My husband was absolutely in love with the cabin! I was very well maintained and I just enjoyed their beautiful pool as much as possible! Night swimming was just wonderful with the gorgeous lights the pool has! The wildlife at night was at times calming even with the howler monkeys nearby lol. Luis and Ginni were great at helping us with taxis when our calls were not going thru. My step daughter absolutley enjoyed the hammock! She even considered sleeping in it over night lol People in town were just wonderful and very friendly. I would definetly recommend and as a matter of fact I have had people already ask me about this Colina de Carolina.

Peaceful Oasis in the Trees
We loved La Colina de Carolina! It was like a treehouse oasis—beautiful landscape, cozy cabina with everything you need, lovely porch and awesome pool and view. Howler monkey alarm clocks, which we didn't mind. We had family staying down in town who were able to give us rides up the steep hill, though we did walk down with our kids a few of the mornings (15-20 min walk). Gini was so helpful in greeting us and getting us situated. We were very sad to leave!

Perfection
This was by far the best stand-alone property that we have rented anywhere. Our host and her caretaker were wonderful. The site is uphill from Montezuma so close enough to walk (if you can manage the hill) but cabs were always available in town if you couldn't. There was a little bit of road noise but nothing that disturbed us - we felt alone in this paradise. No a/c was not a problem there was always a delightful breeze and plenty of fans to cool the inside (we were only inside to cook and sleep anyway). And the pool - pictures are good but they don't do it justice, we were in it every day we were there, and it was so delightful to return from a day's adventure and spend the evening watching the sky while having a float! We would not hesitate to book this location again.

Infinity Pool & View
This cabin location has beautifully maintained garden and infinity pool with incredible view. We stayed in July and every night was lightning storm and every day was sunny. Each morning woke to howler monkeys and beautiful birds while enjoying coffee. It was exceptionally humid this July. The house was better than town and we learned that dipping in the infinity pool helped cool us down prior to sleeping. Luis was friendly onsite caretaker with great insights on the area.

Best winter vacation ever
Mesmerizing, Paradise, Comfortable just to stay put, just need groceries and wine and beer, and stay put and dnjoy the infinity pool and nature. We love Montezuma, plenty of restaurants and bars and shopping. You catch either a bus or a taxi just up the road from the drive way. We just either hated a taxi or thumbed it. The Tico's are wonderful people, aimed to please. Carolina and Luis are the best, and will help in any way. This place is booked for next winter, or we would have booked it before we left. You will all love it here, and will ot want to leave, as we do not want to leave.

Property promotes pure relaxation
The perfect place to relax, gorgeous view from wrap porch. Nice to dip in pool afternoons. House has everything you need to cook. Comfortable for two people, more would be cramped inside using futon with little personal storage/space. Montezuma town is a bit gritty, roads are tough in the area. Must have a car.

We can't wait to come back!
What an oasis in beautiful Montezuma. This property was even better then we expected - the photos online do not do it justice. The house is fully-stocked with everything you may need in the kitchen, plus Carol provides pool toys and beach mats, books, lots of info about the area, and entertainment. It was immaculately clean and very comfortable. We just loved waking up to the sounds of birds and monkeys, eating our breakfasts out on the beautiful deck overlooking the pool and the Pacific, and planning our days. And the pool - wow! My 9-year-old would have stayed in it the entire 5 days we were there if had let him. We only wish we had scheduled even more time here - we will be sure to come back!

Bliss
We spent ten days of bliss at LCC in December/January. From the giddy moment of arrival to the sad moment we had to leave, we found the property to be a delightful place for rest, relaxation, and reflection. As others have noted, there is no end to the time one can spend on the patio or pool deck, being caressed by the breeze and captivated by the sounds and views. Carol, the owner, was inviting and thorough in her correspondence; Ginette, the property manager, warmly greeted us and gave a fantastic rundown of both the property and the region; Luis, the caretaker, respected and ensured our privacy while being incredibly kind and gracious with our requests and queries. Various notes: -The building is beautifully crafted. -The pool is superb. -Stargazing from the pool or deck is highly recommended. I have never seen so many stars. -Despite the 26-30 degree heat, we slept comfortably at night and for naps during the day with the fans going -The kitchen is very well appointed for cooking. We cooked most of our breakfasts, eating it at our leisure from the beautifully crafted patio dining table -We ate most dinners in Montezuma and area's many excellent restaurants (Puggo's, Cocolores, and Sano Banano being our favourites) -Nice appliances (fridge, stove, clothes washer/dryer) and fast internet were unexpectedly appreciated luxuries -We made great use of our rental SUV. In fact I would suggest a vehicle is required as the ~1.5km road up from the village is steep, winding, busy during the day, and not pedestrian-friendly. Many of the roads in the area required at least moderate ground clearance, with 4x4 recommended (possibly a necessity in rainy season)

What a view
This was a last-minute booking and the owner/property manager were very easy to deal with and accommodate our request of an early check in. It was very helpful that the property manager and groundskeeper both spoke excellent English. The landscaping and gardens were stunning and very well-maintained. The house is a wood construction with a cabin like feel that was well kept. It was my fault for not noticing that there was no air-conditioning when I booked so we found it a bit warm trying to sleep. We really joyed sitting around the new pool having a evening nightcap.

A Gorgeous Spot
This location is fantastic. It has an incredible view of the ocean and there is wildlife all around. The property is very well maintained and the house so super clean. The front porch was so nice to sit and relax. The staff was incredibly helpful. Luis was an amazing help and so friendly. He helped us book a snorkeling journey and chatted with us anytime we passed him at the house. Excellent customer service. It was also easy to get into contact with the owner.

A Little Piece of Paradise
My husband and I had a wonderful, relaxing stay at La Colina. It was exactly as advertised. The location was perfect as it was private on a nice spacious lot, yet close enough to the small town of Montezuma to make it convenient. The amenities listed were spot on and it was a very comfortable space for us to be and base our adventure from. Located at the top of the long hill descending down to the village, we had a beautiful ocean view that was wonderful to wake up to and watch the sun come up. Many bird songs and monkey howls could be heard at all times of the day, but especially in the early morning hours. With Carols directions the place was not hard to find and had good signage for the driveway, which was very private and felt safe for the car and well off the main road. It was nice to have the covered area for the car as temps were very hot and helped to keep the car cooler when parked. The grounds were well taken care of and watered daily by the very friendly and helpful caretaker. The bedroom was spacious enough and the bed quite comfortable, but because we are tall people, at times felt small as it was a double. A queen would have worked a bit better for us personally. The bathrooms were fine and the shower very nice to come home to after a day exploring and being at the beach. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook full meals and so nice to have ice trays with lots of ice. The wifi worked fine and it was so nice having the washing machine. We never used the dryer as there was a nice clothes line, but it was there if we had needed it. The deck was our favorite spot and spend many hours just enjoying the out of doors. It was nice being up in elevation a bit because there was mostly always a breeze. Also lots of casa blanca fans to keep the air flowing. Overall we felt well taken care of through phone calls and texts with both Carol and the property manager. I would recommend this stay to anyone, long term or for a few days.

Magical stay in Montezuma
We absolutely loved our stay here. The veranda is devine morning and night. Such a well stocked kitchen and so practical. Great knives and the blender and microwave were a bonus. Really nice to have use of the coolers/cooler bags as well. Loved eating on the veranda, playing cards and reading surrounded by the sounds of the jungle. Its a little piece of heave.

Very nicely situated, quiet bungalow setup high on the hill overlooking the ocean in Montezuma.
Had a nice 2 night stay here. Family of 4 with 19 yo and 9 yo sons. Arrival and check-in was smooth...Ginette and Olga sorted us all out very quickly. The kitchen was compact but well equiped so eating in was easy. Beautiful Terrasse with dining table overlooking the ocean was awesome for meals. The house is just 1 km up the steep hill down to Montezuma village so super convenient to get to the beach, store, restaurants, etc. Despite being just off the main road it was really very quiet. Lots of beautiful birds, butterflies and little lizards. Monkey sightings on the first day. Easy parking. All in all a great place. Thanks to Carol and Ginette for the opportunity to use this home. For anyone planning a trip to the Southern Nicoya please heed all advise you read in regards to a 4WD vehicle. You really need one in this area. I cannot overstate this. The roads are very rough in the dry season with lots of steep sections and I can imagine when it gets wet the roads would truly necessitate 4WD. Enjoy!

Had a wonderful time staying at La colina! Amazing
We stayed at La colina da Carolina from Jan 31 – to Feb 26th. We stayed a month there. To start from the beginning, we first contacted Carol last year when we were just researching about CR and where to visit. We were travelling with our 2 sons (2 and 6) and needed to be on the budget. Carol’s property provided just that and more. Carol provided us with all the information on the house, Montezuma and even Costa Rica.. The pictures do not do justice to how conveniently located and how beautiful the property is. She is thoughtful when it comes to organizing and providing amenities in her house. The house has EVERYTHING you could possibly need with little kids in a month. You absolutely do not need a car to stay at the property. The house is a km or so away from the Montezuma town. The walk is extremely downhill and then very very uphill coming up. With 2 small kids, we easily managed to go downhill. Coming back up we would taxi (very inexpensive (2000 colones each way) which was easily available). The town itself has so much to offer for adults and kids. We stayed here for a month and were not bored a single day. You can easily and inexpensively taxi to nearby towns as well. The property manager Ginette and the caretaker at the property are just as wonderful and can assist you in just about everything. The know how to go an extra mile to make you feel special and comfortable at the property. The drive from San Jose to Montezuma is perfectly wonderful with new roads paved recently. For first timers hesitant to come down, it is an absolute experience to come down to Montezuma that you will cherish forever. Carol’s property is perfectly situated close enough to the town to walk easily but far enough to enjoy the peace and quiet. The howler monkeys, Capuchin, humming birds put on quite a show at the property and my kids just loved it. Children wise, it is an extremely safe home. Enough room for them to play on the veranda or outside on the lawn. Microwave, fridge, stove is in excellent condition and a brand new smart TV for kids to enjoy after a long day at the beach. Her property is also equipped with beach mats, umbrellas, and much more for all seasons so you don’t have to pack extra stuff in your luggage. I can go on and on about the property but in the end all I have to say is we LOVED LOVED staying at La colina de Carolina and will return in a heartbeat. It’s worth every dollar and Carol makes it worthwhile. Thank you for everything! The M family.

Serenity with a view
My wife and I spent most of February enjoying the view of the ocean and jungle from the glorious front deck of LCC. The house itself is comfortable, clean, well-equipped and spacious. I loved the all-wood architecture. The surrounding gardens are wonderful and alive with all sorts of beautiful birds and critters (no biting insects). When we needed help (which was infrequent) we were well cared for by the property manager and house-keeper. LCC was perfect for us because we're seniors seeking peace and quiet in the warmth of Costa Rica. The only challenge for us was the steep hill when walking back from the beaches and town of Montezuma. Nevertheless, taxis are inexpensive, easy and friendly.

La Colina de Carolina
My daughter and 2 grandaughters stayed at La Colina da Carolina for 2 weeks. We arrived late on Sunday afternoon and the caretaker was there waiting for us. She gave us a quick tour and made sure that the phone and Internet were working before she left. The house was surprisingly comfortable for the 4 of us. We spent most of our time there on the porch watching the beautiful view. We rented a car and I am so glad we did as the walk into Montezuma, while not far, was very steep. The road from the cabin to Montezuma was paved, but none of the other roads were. Four wheelers were available, but the car was much more comfortable for us. Driving around while there is not for the faint of heart, especially after a good rain, but it definitely was fun.

Fabulous 2 weeks at LCC!
My husband and I arrived here for a 2 week stay and loved every minute. We are retired and are mid sixties. We rented a car out of Liberia and spent 2 days in the Arenal volcano area before driving down to Montezuma. Ginette met us and showed us the place and where everything is. Very helpful. Even included the basic supplies to get us started such as coffee, milk, olive oil, etc. Our days fell into a lovely routine. Get up early, have coffee on the porch, leisurely breakfast overlooking the ocean, do dishes. Then we'd go out for the day, usually returning around 4 to have a shower, drink and cards on the verandah and dinner around 7. We tried to watch some videos but power blips made this challenging. LCC is very well equipped! The kitchen is tiny but there is every type piece of kitchen appliance and utensils that you could want. There is a full sized washer and dryer. We opted to hang our laundry on the clothesline as the breezes dried the clothes very quickly. We felt very safe at LCC. The Montezuma coastline is so beautiful with the beaches and rocks and trails. Some activities we enjoyed in the area: Hike to Montezuma Falls Lazing on the beach and swimming in the ocean Zip-lining 3 hour difficult hike in Cabo Blanco Boat cruise and snorkelling at Tortuga Island Day trips to Santa Teresa and Playa Tambor Walk down and up the hill (at dawn) 3 hour hike to Cocolito Falls (at dawn) Walk out to Island at Cabuya We mostly cooked our own meals but ate out at Cocolores, Ylang-Ylang, Cabuya Bakery, Puggos and Soda Typico Las Palmeros. Food was excellent everywhere. We saw howler monkeys, white faced monkeys, coati, wild turkey, lizards, lots of birds and of course, Rocky, the neighbor's friendly dog. Perfect weather every day and perfect vacation!

We spent 3 weeks here, first time in Costa Rica. La Colina was a lovely surprise. The temperatures in Montezuma were consistently 88-90f and the house was fine with the fans. We spent a lot of time on the porch that looks over jungle greens to a great view of the ocean, and cooked most of our dinners there instead of eating out. Beautiful and relaxing, Carol and her team take good care of the details of staying there. Thanks!

Great escape
My wife and I spent almost a week here and had a lovely time. The property is beautifully kept and has a fantastic view of the ocean. It is fairly private although there is occasional noise from neighbors or the road. There is no AC but we were comfortable with the fans and the breezes off the ocean. The shower is nice and the kitchen has everything you need. We saw lots of hummingbirds and even had an agouti make a trip through our yard while we were enjoying a relaxing afternoon on the porch. We even saw monkeys in the trees one day on the property! The house is at the top of a steep grade a quick drive from town and I would recommend either renting a 4 wheeler or a car as it is a pretty narrow and steep road even for those in good shape! Montezuma is a fun town but we were so grateful to be able to escape to our refuge at the top of the hill for some real relaxation and peace. What a fantastic place!

I am an independent person with a love of adventure; always active, always looking for a better idea in life. My favorite quote: 'If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.' After a corporate life for many years, now I have a home in Costa Rica. And one day, I will move from Atlanta and live in Costa Rica. Until then, I visit La Colina and rent the house out to help with expenses.

I have changed careers. I am a teacher now. I teach English language and culture to non-native speakers.

I could not do what I do without the help of my fine caretaker and property manager.

And so it is!

Why they chose this property

When I first came to Montezuma on vacation several years ago, I fell in love with the area as so many people do. I decided that I was going to move there, bought
2.5 acres on top of a hill with a commanding view of the water and started construction. I had a house designed and built that would have a minimal impact on the property and blend in with the surrounding nature, which is one of the aspects of the house most commented upon by guests. If you enjoy tranquility, birds, butterflies and other wildlife, time in a hammock and rustic yet comfortable surroundings with all of the modern amenities, then this house is for you.

What makes this property unique

The view of the sea and the constant breeze while sitting on my back porch is my favorite thing about this property.
