About this property

Mid Century Beach House & Spa in the Desert!

The City of Palm Springs ID: #1020

If you are concerned about my lack of reviews, please know that I have just recently listed on VRBO after many years as a Super Host on Airbnb.

Turn back the clock in this famed Alexander “authentic” Palm Springs home on a cul-de-sac street in the hip, safe Racquet Club Estates neighborhood minutes from downtown. The spacious, open floor plan creates a light and bright living space with many sliding doors that open onto an enormous, newly landscaped patio and backyard featuring a gigantic, private pool completely surrounded by 10-foot hedges on all sides (bathing suits optional). The home has 3 bedrooms (K, K, Q), 2 full baths, and a hot tub for 7.

Inside the home, is a light and bright living space that never feels crowded; and, because the main living space faces north, it remains (relatively) cool and airy throughout the hot Palm Springs day. Enjoy the colorful and eclectic artwork with vintage modern and contemporary furnishings right out of "Dwell" magazine. There is a 45” ROKU TV with all your necessary streaming apps (but I prefer the mountain view) in the tile-floored living room/kitchen area. The kitchen is original but well-equipped. I wouldn’t call it a “chef's kitchen” but it has everything you'll need to cook at home. The bedrooms have carpeted floors and super clean beds with fluffy comforters and memory foam toppers for a cozy night's rest.

The many sliding glass doors facing the pool allow in lots of light and open onto concrete patios that are a natural extension of the interior. Outside is an enormous (10,000+ square foot), newly landscaped backyard featuring a gigantic, heated (if desired) pool large enough for the entire family to enjoy at the same time! There are plenty of areas to spread out on a sunbed, eat meals, BBQ (provided), enjoy a game of croquet on the grass, or stargaze around the wood-burning chimenea or in the 7-person hot-tub... all in complete privacy surrounded by 10-foot fichus hedges on all sides (bathing suits optional)! Please note that the hot tub is not surrounded by hedges but is still private.

An easy 10-minute drive from the airport and a quick 2-minute drive to all the downtown restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, boutiques, vintage stores, and Palm Springs’ famous Aerial Tramway - the home is easily accessible to Palm Springs’ culture and night-life while still far enough away for you to escape from the world in peace and quiet. Or just take a morning walk through the clean and quiet neighborhood filled entirely with similarly styled homes. Just two blocks away is Victoria Park where you can listen to birds chirping, run through sprinklers, meet local dogs, and watch children playing on the modern jungle gyms.

-= CITY RULES =-

The City of Palm Springs has VERY strict requirements for short-term vacation rentals. There can be absolutely NO music outside or loud noise coming from inside the property. This is true for all vacation rentals in the city.

The city requires that you provide me with an image of your photo ID (license/passport) when booking. This is not optional and is required for all short-term rentals in Palm Springs. VRBO does not and will not share your ID with me.

The city requires that someone greet you at the home on arrival. Since COVID, I prefer to do that via video call (facetime/zoom). If you can’t video call I can send my manager but if he’s busy on the day you'd like to arrive I might have to cancel. Please contact me directly before booking if you have any questions.

The city requires that you provide the license plate numbers of all vehicles staying at the property. Parking is available for up to three cars in the driveway. Street parking is available on a first-come, first-serve basis; however, only 3 cars are permitted on-site per city ordinance.

The city imposes a TOT and TBID tax that will be calculated into your final price but pool heating and the pet fee are not. A $100 per-night pool heat is optional. You must decide when booking as it takes at least 24-48 hours to heat the large pool. Please contact me directly when booking if you'd like the pool heated.

I welcome responsible pet owners of a single dog that’s under 25 pounds. Dogs are not allowed on the furniture, in the beds, pool, or spa - sorry, NO exceptions and you must clean up any doggie doo in the yard before you leave. Please contact me directly when booking if you are traveling with your dog. Please note that there is an additional fee of $50 if I accept your pet due to the housecleaning requirements.

I was born in Pennsylvania but have lived in Los Angeles for over 30 years. Palm Spring is one of my favorite places in So Cal. I'm a very active traveler and love playing beach volleyball, hiking in the desert and riding my bike whenever I can.

Why they chose this property

I bought my home in 2014 as an oasis during the most difficult time in my life. I didn’t know anything about Alexander homes or vacation renting. I just loved the desert and needed a place to disappear, slow down, and recoup for a while. After getting back on my feet a few years later I moved back to Los Angeles and decided to open the house up to others in hopes that it might do for them what it did for me. I know it shows its age in places but I continue to upgrade and improve it whenever I can. It is a labor of love for me and I hope that shines through some of its age.

What makes this property unique

The Racquet Club Estates is a historic community designed by famed architect William Krisel and constructed in the mid-1950s and early 60s by the Alexander Construction Company founded by George Alexander and his son Robert. The houses were originally built as second or vacation homes for A-list celebrities and the well-off residing in Los Angeles at that time.

Alexander homes have a classic, mid-century modern look designed for ease of indoor-outdoor living with spaces that seamlessly flow into one another to create “the perfect ambiance for poolside entertaining” - or so they were advertised. To keep costs low, the houses were pre-fabricated, giving each a common floor plan - it is said that if you walk one Alexander, you’ve walked them all.

Even so, Krisel wanted to ensure that the neighborhood didn’t feel repetitive so he designed 3 different roofline options - the “Flattop” with a flat roofline (my home); the “A-Frame” with a roof that peaks in the center; and the “Butterfly” the quintessential Palm Springs roofline that rises at either corner of the home. As you walk/drive the neighborhood you can easily identify each.
