The Neighborhood:
Tower House enjoys a privileged position at the crossroads of natural beauty and small-town charm, perched directly on the historic Old Ship Canal in Benton Harbor. This unique waterway connects to the marina where the St. Joseph River meets the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, creating a dynamic aquatic landscape that changes with the seasons, weather, and time of day.

From the property's multiple decks, guests enjoy front-row views of passing boats and water activities, with the prestigious Inn at Harbor Shores creating a picturesque backdrop across the water. The location offers that rare combination of serene waterfront seclusion while remaining just steps away from vibrant downtown St. Joseph with its quaint shops, diverse restaurants, and local galleries.

For beach enthusiasts, Silver Beach – one of Lake Michigan's premier sandy shores – lies within easy walking distance. Here, visitors can experience the legendary Lake Michigan sunsets, cool off in crystal-clear waters, or relax on golden sands that stretch along the shoreline. The iconic Silver Beach Carousel and nearby Whirlpool Fountain provide additional entertainment for families with children.

Golf aficionados will appreciate being moments away from the renowned Harbor Shores Golf Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature design that has hosted multiple Senior PGA Championships. The challenging layout weaves through diverse landscapes, including riverfront, dunes, hardwood forest, and lakefront terrain.

The strategic location of Tower House makes it the perfect base for exploring Michigan's scenic Harbor Country. Within a short drive, visitors can discover award-winning wineries dotting the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail, explore hiking trails at Grand Mere State Park, or visit charming neighboring towns like New Buffalo, Union Pier, and Saugatuck.

Throughout the year, the area comes alive with seasonal events – from summer concerts and beach festivals to fall harvest celebrations and winter holiday markets. No matter the season, the location of Tower House offers the perfect vantage point to experience the natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and small-town charm that make Michigan's southwest coast a beloved destination.

Getting Around:
Positioned just off I-94, Tower House offers the perfect central hub for Southwest Michigan adventures. Enjoy seamless access to Chicago (90 minutes), New Buffalo (25 minutes), or downtown Saint Joseph (merely 1 minute away). Boaters will appreciate the convenience of docking their vessel during their stay, with several boat launches nearby, including the adjacent Anchor's Way Marina. Transportation options abound—walk, bike, catch an Uber, or take advantage of the convenient water taxi service that connects you to local harbors and marinas. For those without their own watercraft, boat and jet ski rentals are readily available. Arrive by land or water, or even by rail via Amtrak from Chicago's Union Station with direct service to Silver Beach in St. Joseph, whether exploring vibrant local attractions or venturing further to discover the region's hidden gems, our strategic location ensures effortless accessibility for all your Harbor Country explorations.

Other Things to Note:
The Olde Ship Canal was completed in 1890, transforming what was once wetlands into the thriving harbor that gave Benton Harbor its name. Dug by a private group, this vital waterway connected Lake Michigan to the St. Joseph River, allowing larger ships to access Benton Harbor and turning it into a significant port for both passenger and freight transport.
Town founders Henry C. Morton, Sterne Brunson, and Charles Hull envisioned this canal as the key to economic prosperity, creating a strategic junction where the St. Joseph River meets Lake Michigan. The canal facilitated the docking of large ships that transported agricultural products, manufactured goods, and passengers, particularly to and from Chicago.
Today, your Tower House stands as a witness to this maritime heritage. From its decks, guests can observe the very waterway that built the region's economy, now transformed from a commercial shipping lane into a recreational paradise. The Olde Ship Canal remains a living piece of history that connects your property not just to the waters of Lake Michigan but to the rich historical legacy that shaped Southwest Michigan.

Interaction with Guests:
You will be sent a keyless code for check-in, and staff are available by phone or text. This is a no-smoking, no-pet property.

Stairway to Heaven

The house was fantastic. We appreciated the bathrooms with plenty of towels and provided shampoo, conditioner, and lotion and plenty of bath towels. Additionally, greatly appreciated the night lights throughout the space making moving around in the dark much safer. Each level was like its own unique space to be enjoyed. The coffee shop next door was great too, although the well stocked coffee and creamers in the kitchen were a sweet touch. A great overall stay!

Unique property

The property was definitely unique and something we have never stayed in before so that was cool. However, I would NOT recommend for seniors or small children. The stairs were a LOT and the deck by the water doesn’t haven’t a railing which is a hazard with small children. Owner was great at communication though. A+

Beautiful home on the canal

This home was amazing! Great location along the canal. A short drive or long walk into Saint Joseph from Benton Harbor . It has an awesome coffee shop next door, a great fire pit and several balconies. I will definitely stay here again when visiting.

Lovely house central to everything

We spent the Columbus Day weekend here with our friends. Just a quick trip over from Chicago. The house has a small footprint and it built up, so there are a ton of stairs, but they have used every square foot efficiently. It’s centrally located to both St. Joseph and everything in Benton Harbor. We walked in to downtown St. Joseph multiple times. Day with no issue. The house was clean and communication was easy. We would definitely stay again. Only thing I would change is the second bedroom has a door that is glass-paned which is a little awkward when you have two couples staying.

Relaxing with a view!

Overall our stay was amazing. The tower house was actually better in person compared to the photos. Plenty of outdoor space for adults to relax and for kids to fish. The kids loved fishing off the deck and there is a great place to get bait close by. Both bedrooms offer privacy, they seemed to have fixed the issue on the doors in the 2nd bedroom, we felt it was private. Garage space is very spacious and can definitely fit three cars comfortably. There were two trundles on the third floor near the bedroom and the older boys liked that nook as their little hangout (sleeps two). The trundle on the main level sleeps two as well, very comfortable. Be prepared for a lot of stairs. We definitely got our steps in but it was worth it! Although there is no grass for kids, they still had plenty of room to hang out and run a little (ages 11-15). The restaurant next door quiets down at 1pm but was never an issue when it was open. We didn’t get a chance to check it out but it gets great reviews for breakfast, coffee and brunch. Great amount of space and many outdoor balconies/spaces. Great choice for couples and or families. Property manager was very responsive and helpful! Very happy with our experience.

Kitchen suggestions

The house was great and we appreciate that you came right away to fix the clogged drain. However, of all the houses we've rented over the years (many), the Tower House had the most poorly stocked kitchen. Can opener was broken, no oven mitts, no tupperware, no wine glasses, no blender, no deep (Pyrex) baking dishes, no spices, no extra hand towels, old terrible sponge, no measuring spoons or cups, not enough coffee mugs or silverware, terrible coffee supply (Maxwell house?), no lemon/lime juice squeezer, no cheese grater, ... drawers in the refrigerator don't open correctly. I think you should have a friend who is a cook come over and help you get the kitchen up to standard. Another suggestion is to provide instructions about the thermostat (sorry if you did and I didn't see them). We couldn't figure out where it was.

Great overall

House was adorable! Very large garage for parking multiple cars, house is separate with privacy off the main road. Super convenient to all restaurants, shops and what the town has to offer. Coffee canal next door was sooo yummy and loved the convenience. Lots of nice touches on decor. Comfy beds. There was not an iron when we arrived, as advertised. We were there for a wedding weekend and let them know. A new one was bought and brought to us within a few hours. A few things to note.. The 2nd smaller bedroom has clear glass paned pocket doors so it is not completely private for changing/sleeping. We hung a sheet over the doors creativity but would have preferred privacy. Looking back it doesn’t show this in the advertised pictures. There were spider webs all over the back decks and balconies, all 3 floors, tables, chairs, railings, lights. I know it’s summer but we would have appreciated the decks being sprayed off and larger webs taken down. The living room bathroom sink was clogged as the stopper was jammed into the hole unable to use the release pull. We fixed it ourselves (in construction) and is working fine now. GFI outlet in main bath wasn’t working but there was one close by in bedroom. We let them know. Nothing to make us not stay there again, just some small oversights we hope they can improve for the next guests:) All in all it was a wonderful stay.

Great Overall / Very minor things to fix

Stay was great overall. Great location, adorable house. Thoughtful decor, comfy beds, great views of the river and surrounding area. Close to all restaurants, beaches, etc. Coffee Canal next door was wonderful. Large easy to use garage and house has good privacy set off the main road. Things to note that are easily fixable with management: I had to reach out day 1 as there was no iron/board as advertised (we were there for a wedding weekend and needed one). They brought one a few hours later. Appreciated the prompt service. GFI outlet didn’t work in main bathroom, one nearby in bedroom worked fine, but hard to do hair without mirror. No full length mirror on top floor with bedrooms. Popped breaker in upstairs bathroom just by blow drying hair, management gave us the code promptly to unlock and reset breaker. Upstairs guest bedroom has clear glass paned pocket doors, so no real privacy for sleeping or changing. This is not shown in listing pictures so was a surprise for our friends who stayed with us. The same pocket door was installed for master bath and panes were painted. I’d definitely do the same thing or let future tenants know so they can decide if that is acceptable for “bedroom”! Decks we’re covered in cobwebs and dusty. I know it’s summer but could have sprayed off with a hose. I attempted to but there wasn’t one outside. All in all, place was cozy and fine for what we needed but these simple things could improve for next time. Thanks.

Benton Harbor

Property was excellent, soft linens, comfortable beds, body soap, shampoo and tissues were available. The property was clean and the grill was very useful as we brought food to grill. The area was being built up and we would consider spending time again next year to see the area improvements. Close breakfast/ coffee shop next door. Area restaurants and golf courses we also enjoyed.

Amazing, unique, great location

We loved this very unique home. From the second you walk in, you just want to keep exploring and compliment the very talented individuals that created such a beautiful space. The pictures are great but it’s even more spacious and beautiful in person. Great location. We walked into town to shop, eat, and enjoyed the beautiful beach and breathtaking sunsets. Outdoor area is fantastic on all levels. Only thing I’d change next time is staying longer. Communication was great. Thank you so much.
