About this property

Large home with Mountain Views & 20 min from town

Easy 20 minute drive to the wonderful resort towns of Cashiers (to the east) or Highlands (to the west), but still a "deep woods" location at the end of a road with fantastic views of the mountains across the valley. Very private and rustic with only one neighbor in sight. Our backyard borders the Nantahala National Forest, and a 20-minute path leads to the Chattooga River and Chattooga River Trail with beautiful river access, picnic areas, swimming holes and endless hiking. This area is rated 'wild and scenic' by the forest service - a rare honor!

Kids love this place as we have built a special 'kids cave' inside - cozy and kid-size to get away from the adults - they have their own secret spot! Outside are play areas, swings, fort and hammock - and of course most important of all - the woods! Trails run through the woods, and the day will fly by while they explore. All the outside features are close enough so parents can enjoy their time on the upstairs screened porch and still keep an eye on the children.

Built in 2003, this passive-solar design brings the sun in during winter, so is naturally warm then, but shades the windows with overhangs and tree cover in summer so we stay cool! It also includes air conditioning and ceiling fans, a toasty see-thru gas fireplace on the main floor, and electric heat in each bedroom.

The open floor plan designed especially for family reunions. We have four full bathrooms, seven bedrooms (two with king size beds, four with queen size, and one with two twins), plus large loft (with two trundle beds) . . . this place can hold a LOT of people! Other rooms include family room, dining room, breakfast nook, and screened, covered patio and exterior deck with charcoal grill. Six BRs share adjoining baths. The mail-level BR has a queen and is designed for limited mobility persons with a bath nearby and low-threshold shower stall.

For mealtime, there is a 12-14 person dining room table, plus large circular table for 4 - 6, plus seating for 6 at the kitchen bar-top.

Includes large center-island kitchen with gas range, microwave, blender, and two coffee makers (including Keurig). Also a large laundry room with washer and dryer.

Our Dad built this for our own family and go there often when its not rented. It is stocked with many books & games (and usually staples and condiments in the pantry). Also have a smart TV with satellite cable and WiFi.

fun family time in the mountains

This home was just wonderful! Lots of space for our large group to spread out. The dining room was huge, so we were all able to eat together. The mountains and trees were beautiful and relaxing. It was a great place for half of our family to stay for a family reunion. Lots of things to do in the area. The kitchen was well equipped for each of us to take a turn cooking a meal. Our furry family members also enjoyed it!

Amazing place, as advertised

Everything about the cabin was as advertised--great location right between Highlands and Cashiers, spacious, lots of rooms and beds, comfortable, perfect loft area for kids, hiking trails right from the property. The cabin was well stocked and clean, and had everything we needed for our stay. Owners were responsive and helpful to any requests/questions. We particularly enjoyed being 5-10 minutes from Cashiers sliding rock, which is where we finished just about every afternoon. Really hard to identify anything lacking. Would highly recommend to anyone with a large group.

Lovely mountain house

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this secluded home tucked in the woods. There were 12 adults and 2 children from our family and we had plenty of room. The kitchen is well-equipped and the outdoor space is ideal for a getaway to the mountains. The drive up the lane on a dirt road is a bit scary at first and best attempted in an 4-wheel drive vehicle. But, we got used to it and we’re pros at it by the end of the week. The owners were very responsive and provided a binder of helpful information. Plenty to do in the surrounding area. We even hiked the trail from the house down to the Chatooga River! Make sure you are in good shape for the hike back up to the house, though! We would happily stay here again!

Perfect Family Vacation!

We chose this cabin for our annual family vacation this year. 10 adults and 5 kids under age of 7- The property was clean and inviting and included lots of extras like condiments, kitchen spices, foils and storage items extra towels. There are three great outdoor areas which allowed the large group to stretch out and have those important one on one family re-connect and catch up conversations. The dining room table was enormous and we all sat together for meals and board games. The bedrooms were comfortable and quiet. The kids loved the secret hideout under the stairs. A few of us hiked to the river and located the waterfall and swimming hole. (Rem to take a right when the path ends at the river) It was awesome. We spent a fun day in Highlands and an amazing day at the ‘Little Sliding Rock’ just 3 miles from the cabin. All ages could slide and swim. We walked the short distance to the top of the road from the cabin for the 360 panorama view. Be sure to take time to read the Owners Welcome Book. It is very informative and useful for finding things to do. We enjoyed our stay and plan to visit again. Thank you for sharing your cabin with us!

Family Vacation at MelbeMonte Lodge

We had a fantastic five days at MelbeMonte Lodge. The house is very comfortable and there was plenty of room for our group of nine adults and two teen/pre-teens. There is one bedroom and one full bathroom on the main floor. The other six bedrooms and three full baths are on the lower level. Those three baths each connect to two of the six downstairs bedrooms, so basically you have three Jack and Jill bed/bath set-ups downstairs. I believe there was room for at least five to sleep in the loft. We had a lot of rain so we spent a good bit of time in the house, but even so there was plenty of room to spread out. The view from the breakfast room and screened in porch was amazing even in the worst weather. The driveway made us all quite nervous when we first arrived, but after a couple of days we got used to it. At one point we had six cars parked at the house, including a Miata and a Prius that both managed to make it to the top. The fire pit is great and there is plenty of seating if you pull over the chairs from the outside dining table. One big advantage of this house is that it is exactly half way between Highlands and Cashiers. Plus, there are several great hikes and beautiful places to see just right off of Whiteside Cove Road where this house is located. If you have a big group that loves to hike, or you just want to get together to spend time in a beautiful place, I would definitely recommend this house for your next trip.

Not as advertised

Let’s start with Tara was easy to contact and responsive and did what she could to try and make things right. The screened in porch was beautiful in the morning. Plenty of room in the kitchen for everyone. The housekeeping was less than sufficient for our arrival. Tara said the house had just been deep cleaned but there was no way. Built up dust on bathroom floors around the base, kitchen trash not taken out, range was dirty, keurig had mold in the water canister, kitchen floor hadn’t been swept and expired food left in fridge. None of the outside that was advertised was useable except grill. My daughters father in law cleaned the upstairs sitting area for me. He also trimmed some of the path trying to find the water hole that was suppose to be 15 minute hike. 2 different hikes and we never found it. After talking with Tara on phone she said it is more like a 30 minute hike and not marked cause it’s private property. Swing set is rotted and the big fire pit hasn’t been cleaned out since at least last fall. No hammock which I was looking forward too. Once the 2 trash cans outside are full you have to take the trash to recycle center. Bear got into the trash one night and tore up the trash bin. Tara said maintenance man was coming to clean out fire area, hang hammock and try to reenforce play set and fix trash bin but didn’t show up. My oldest daughter and her family left on 3rd day and we left early on day 4. Road is not suitable for a car.

Quiet cabin in the woods

We stayed at this cabin for our annual family vacation. We had 13 people/4 families. We enjoyed our stay. The location is between Highlands and Cashiers, NC The cabin is spacious and well designed. The upper level has a large kitchen. Big dining room table perfect for family dinner and game nights. There is also a living room with a nice TV and screened porch to enjoy nature. The lower level has 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. Each pair of rooms is connected with a bathroom. There is also a big loft area above the main floor great for kids to play and sleep. We loved hiking down the mountain right out the back door. We never found the river trail from the cabin, but if you drive down the mountain there is a clear gravel pull off that you can walk to a great swimming hole for the kids (including a natural rock slide). There are numerous parks, waterfalls and nature walks nearby, if you are looking for a cabin in the Smokey Mountains I recommend you try this one.

Beautiful location

The property was everything we needed to enjoy a nice stay in the mountains. Tara was very helpful and informative. The house was large with plenty of bedrooms for everyone. The loft area was perfect for the kids to play and sleep. There are many areas to hike from the property and enjoy the scenery. I would recommend this property if you have a very large group. There were some issues with the internet because it could not support a large volume of people on it. We actually had to go to Highlands to do some work. The DirectTV was an issue because the screen was very fuzzy and snowy. We just used the streaming services. Some of the mattresses need to be upgraded because there are large crater areas in the center. Otherwise, it was a good property with plenty to do and just hang out. Thank you for having us.

Great house, wonderful hosts!

We had a big group of 16 from three generations and everybody had a great time. The house was roomy with lots of beds and the kitchen was perfect for fixing big meals for the clan. The location is great — a beautiful private lot and just a short drive to lots of different activities. The hosts are very responsive to any needs. Highly recommended!

Deep Woods is Right!

The house is very private and quiet, about 20 minutes from Cashiers. It is excellent for sleeping and feeding a large crowd. I will warn you that the hike to the creek takes longer than advertised. It is more like 25 minutes to reach the Chatooga River trail (where you should turn RIGHT) and then another 10 minutes to the swimming hole, which is very nice. The hike back to the house is very strenuous. Overall, we had a very enjoyable time.

Family mountain vacation 2021

We are a family of 15. Plenty of beds and lots of room. Kitchen is large and enough dining chairs for all. I loved the "all Season room where I could read, relax and had a terrific view. Lots of hiking and adventures. Lane to house was not so great. It had several ruts and washed out areas. Needs to be paved for better access, however, good if you have a jeep.

About the host

Hosted by Craig Melby

Host profile image
Florida natives that have spent our whole lives visiting the Carolinas. Our Dad built this property when we were young so it really is our "mountain home" that we love to share with guests from all over.
Because we spend a lot of time there, we always leave books, games & there is almost always unopened food in the pantry and refrigerator that guests are welcome to use at their discretion - no replacement necessary - but I usually find more food than I left!

Why they chose this property

We chose this location because it is so close to the gourmet mountain towns of Cashiers and Highlands with their great shopping, dining, golfing, outdoor activities and people. The elevation is cool, the woods are deep and lush, the air is clean and fresh, and the water is the best you will ever drink!

What makes this property unique

Our backyard borders the national forest - we wouldn't have it any other way! Peace and quiet, and nature's beauty are right outside the door. On site we also have a fire pit for campfires and smores, hammock, swings and kids play area, and lots of adventure for the kids.

We also rent to lots of wedding parties from weddings in Cashiers and Highlands . . . we're a quality, fun, inexpensive alternative to lots of individual hotel rooms!
