About this property

December Special: Magical Handcrafted Cabin on 20 Acres Featured in books/mags

*Per current Covid cleaning restrictions about cleaning times needed to sanitize safely, we can not do early check-ins or late check-outs....so please don't request as regulations don't allow it now.... but now onto our great spot!
**Excellent Spot for Romantic Large or Small Island Wedding*!* (Event Fee Required for any party, reunion, or wedding large or small). Not suitable for those that aren't comfortable using steep stairs....
Featured in the coffee table book, 'Madeline Island Summer Homes' by Linda Mack, featured in MSP magazine 'Home and Design,' and also chosen as the site for many weddings, this unique cabin has been called 'wood poetry.' Nestled in the woods 2 miles from the wonderful beach of Big Bay (considered the best on the island), 'Billy Bunkhouse' is a charming and unique cabin built from century-old barn wood that was transported across the winter ice road to Madeline Island in a horse trailer. Set on 20 acres (with horses sometimes grazing about), the rustic cabin is a warm mix of log home craftsmanship in the American tradition (Courtesy of Douglas Construction, the owner's local construction company) and a bright and beachy aesthetic with white-washed pickled walls and stylish antiques accents.

Billy's Bunkhouse features 'relaxation spots' throughout the cabin and property with three cozy lofts with feather down bed covers, a balcony off the master bedroom, a swing on the front porch by a spouting pond, a fire pit (bring your own fold out chairs and wood), and sunlit wooded meadows to picnic or camp in. Sitting by the pond is a perfect place to watch deer graze in the field, and the antique claw foot bathtub with a glass of wine is the perfect end to a hard day at the beach. On cooler nights, watch the fire in the wood stove and listen to the island crickets or frogs chirp 'goodbye mainland....'

Much like Madeline Island herself, this cabin is one-of-a-kind-unique, elegant yet rustic, peaceful, and full of personality. Once a guest here, you'll have had a true island experience.... (a.k.a, nit-pickers not welcome)... this is a country cabin on an island, not a Condo or hotel room or The Hamptons... outside there may be horses, bugs, and big beautiful moons... inside, there are antiques and an aesthetic design captured in a coffee-table book and design magazine. But be clear when booking... while clean, if you want sterile, this is NOT the vacation for you. Also, while the cabin has heat, it was built using 'passive solar' construction meaning that the house uses natural convection between rooms to help efficiently heat and cool the cabin. So while the rooms are visually private, the cabin does not offer total sound privacy between rooms to assist natural airflow. The upper lofts which are up ladder-stairs are not sound-proof, so if you are a group don't expect a total sound barrier. The cabin sleeps 6 but there is an extra trundle bed to sleep 7 if needed...
Please note, this handcrafted home does not have traditional stairs... but rather steep stairs to two lofts. They are not easy to navigate for physically challenged or for kiddos (although kids love it most!). There is a bedroom downstairs, but the other two bedroom are up the stairs and the bathroom is downstairs, so please book with this clarity in mind.
Also, the owners often camp on the back acreage of the property, so you may have neighbors during the summer. There are always 8 front acres that are private, but the barn in the back does sometimes house owners.

Frequently Asked Questions:
-No early check in.
-The cabin is about 1 miles from the beach (Big Bay) and 7 miles from town. It's located on Benjamin Blvd. For sleeping arrangements there are 3 bedrooms: one queen, one full, and one twin with a pull-out trundle bed and also a twin loft above (so it does sleep 7 if needed), but the rental fee is for 6 people MAX, additional people, regardless of age, is $30 extra per person. No one under 21 can rent. Pets are $30 each. Folks can pitch a tent in the yard, but it is again, $30 extra per person.

For a fee, guests can use the pool, spa, and sauna at the Inn on Madeline Island in town. There is a full bathroom and an outdoor shower (the hot tub behind the cabin is not for guest use, emptied).

-Wedding, parties and events are not FREE and guests who attempt to have non-contracted events will be asked to leave. The "Flash" wedding or event has been a new trend on island rentals, and only the max number of guests you have paid for are allowed on the property. Any additional guests or events must be discuss with owners. All weddings and events must be approved by owners, with signed contract and payment to rent property as a venue. This is a bookable wedding venue... flash weddings are illegal trespassing and a breach of contract.

What to expect: There is sometimes a caretaker on the property staying in the converted barn, workers coming periodically to mow the lawn, take care of the horses, empty the holding tank as is typical on the island.

Important in this day-and-age! There is no T.V or video, you just have the island to listen to and watch. There is Wifi but, like much on the island, it comes and goes with Lake Superior Winds it seems. So do prepare to 'unplug.' Cell phones don't work at the cabin (you have a phone for local calls only so bring a phone card if you will need to make long distance calls, you can receive calls), but you can use your cell phones in town where you can always get internet at the best library in the whole wide world!

And as mentioned above, there may be a lovely herd of horses grazing the 20 acres, so bring carrots or apples if you wish to interact with them... Otherwise, you can roam the 20 wooded acres.

'Billy's Bunkhouse' is considered one of the best spots on the island... Please love it with all the love that went into creating it....

One Of A Kind

Our family has been coming to Madeline Island for twenty years, and we try to mix it up between staying in town, or closer to the Town Park. We really appreciated the uniqueness of Billy's Bunkhouse, and how it brought our family of five together in the same space for a few days. The kitchen was well stocked, and there are plenty of places to disappear to when you need a time-out. If you bring bikes, it's a short ride to the Town Park... one of the best places on Earth.

Just perfect here!

This place has all the "feels" you want on a getaway! Everything was charming, clean, and convenient. We enjoyed the yard, the bubbling pond and flowers, the hammock, the deck and the beauty of the uniquely designed cabin. I would stay again and recommend to others.

Great, unique place. Get a grill cover! The robins pooped all over the grill. No dishwasher detergent. No paper towels in holder. Sinks could use a scrubbing. Toilet leaked a lot when flushed.

Perfect place to disconnect

My family and friends have been going to Madeline Island for over 20 years. This was a great place to get away from all the fireworks in the big city over 4th of July. While I love them our dogs do not. One of our party stayed back with them while the rest of us went to see the Madeline Island fireworks show. We had a great time making new memories together, cooking, eating, playing games and enjoying each others company. One of my critiques is that some of the mattresses on the beds could stand to be replaced. I understand that there is "Rustic Charm" but that shouldn't mean a mattress that feels like its 10-15 years old. Also, plumbing might need to be addressed, I've stayed at many places on the island over the years with septic systems and the water seemed to drain from both sinks very slowly. While it was awesome to breathe in fresh air, the occasional waft of raw sewage dampened the mood, but soon became a running joke among our crew. Overall, we made the most of our time here and the pros definitely outweighed the time we spent joking about "fresh air".

Fantastic location, wish it was a bit more comfy

The stairs are definitely a challenge! We knew about them but underestimated how uncomfortable it would be to traverse them with little kids (ages 5 and 8). So we all camped out downstairs instead. Mattresses and bedding all could use an update. Kitchen is great, very clean and efficient and perfectly stocked. The grounds and island location are amazing, just maybe not the place for us until the kids are older.

A niche in nature

What a lovely hideaway in the middle of beautiful Madeline Island! The house itself was everything that it was advertised to be...rustic, cute, comfortable. Yes, the steps were like a ladder but we knew that coming there. Our hosts were very accommodating in letting my daughter and family hook up their camper half way through our stay when their vacation plans got mixed up for a reasonable fee. Our check in was delayed....we arrived at almost 5pm and the cleaner was still cleaning so we came back at 6pm and she was done...not clean though were some of the outside spaces near the house...loys of bird droppings on the grill (which was not cleaned by previous folks) and on the chairs on the little balcony. We just did not use them. Other than that, we had a wonderful stay. Great firepit! And the frog count in the pond was constant entertainment for the grandsons!

Magical Cabin Indeed

We love love love this place. You know how you stay somewhere and you think, "I want this place to be mine," and then after a couple days, that wears off and you are ready to go home? Well, not this time. This cabin has a big place in my heart. I loved every minute of our stay here. It is cozy and just has a rustic charm about it, but the kitchen is fully equipped and the beds are comfy and the high ceilings make it feel more spacious than it is. The bathroom is quirky with vintage sink and tub and the water temp is a little tricky to get just right in the shower, but that's not a big deal. It's super quiet and tucked off the road. Being away from it all was perfect, but it's just a quick ten minute drive from restaurants and the ferry. There is a steep (almost a ladder really) to get upstairs, but once up there, it feels like a treehouse. Super charming. I loved it and will definitely return. It feels like home. Thank you for sharing it!!!!

Brings out the Child in all of us!!!

I can not even begin to put into words how I felt about this quaint property. Our family of 7 gathered on Madeline Island for a must needed getaway together. Everything was just about perfect. From the beautiful 10 acre parcel in the woods to the home filled with well thought out touches at every turn. The 2 little ones had a hard time deciding where they should sleep, from the lofted bunk to the upstairs bedroom that made them feel like they were in a tree house. Although this was perfect for us, it might not be for some. The "stairs" which are more like ladders could be steep for some. The only thing that went wrong on our vacation is that the time away at this property brought the kid out in my 75 year old mother and she decided to play leap frog with the small children and lets just say we had to take an unexpected trip to the ER which required a ferry ride and a 35 minute drive each way. We hope to be back, and my 6 year old nieces quote as we pulled away was "Auntie on our next vacation here maybe we should not play leap frog"!!! Anne

Beautiful Architecture but not the best VRBO has to offer

My husband, 4yr old and six year old stayed here for four nights. Madeline Island is a beautiful place and not to be missed. I cannot say enough good things about the island itself. I read many of the reviews on this place and like others, we too, experienced difficulty in communicating with the owner. In fact, in order to pay her the remaining balance before our arrival I had to get in touch with representatives from VRBO. At one point I was fairly certain we were out the initial down payment because I had sent the owner a personal check which had been cashed and she would not respond to my phone calls or emails. Apparently my emails went to her junk mail. Funny though that prior to this we had been in contact via email and by phone several times. I have been renting from VRBO for eight years and this is the first time I've had an issue like this. As far as the cabin goes, I clearly got the impression that the place was rustic and being campers rustic appealed to us. We loved that there wasn't tv, or cell service. There were some remarks in other reviews about the place being dirty. There is rust in the sink in the bathroom, mildew on the cloth shower curtain, and half used bars of soap lying around, so I do see where some might classify this place as dirty. The linens are old and due to the weather before we arrived the place was damp for most of our visit. We didn't let any of this take away from our trip because ultimately we were there to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Plus we went into the trip knowing the place was rustic as advertised by the owner. While I wasn't surprised by the large spiders in the house, what did surprise me was that over a month after our stay the owner wanted to know if we took one of her queen pillows. She then sent back my refund check with forty dollars deducted due to excessive sand in the cabin. I personally cleaned and swept the entire place before leaving. In the eight years that I have been renting from VRBO (including places far less "rustic" than this), I have never had an owner complain about the condition in which we left the rental. The irony of us not leaving this "very rustic cabin" clean enough makes me chuckle. Overall advice, don't skip Madeline Island, but spend a few extra bucks and save yourself the hassle that comes with this place. I assure you anywhere on the island is going to be beautiful.

Disappointed

The place was good overall but not worth the money. There should have been more transparency about the ladder to get to the bedrooms. It was difficult to sleep between the metal roof and mice.

Cozy cabin with poor maintenance

Pros: beautiful cabin in a great location. Cons: old sketchy furniture, no fire woods, did not have simple pantry items like salt and pepper, the bathroom sink would fill up after running the water for 30 seconds, there is a beautiful hammock with cute candle lanterns on the top but no candles, could not connect to WiFi as the network name and password was wrong, any communication with the property manager took at least 24 hours to get a response. Bottom line: this place must have been a great place at some point but not anymore.

Beautiful and quiet home minutes from beach

We loved this gorgeous and whimsical home. Quiet and peaceful, great star viewing, and our teens loved looking for frogs in the little pond. The pulley basket to the loft is a brilliant touch. Hope to visit again! Thanks!

The best place we have ever stayed!

Absolutely wonderful - beautiful interior and a great location. We had an amazing trip to Madeline Island and it was perfect! We arrived on a hot August day and the place was wonderfully cool with air conditioning. The loft rooms were amazing - my kids were in heaven and immediately taking pics to show all their friends. Such a relaxing night with everything we needed. It felt like a dream!

Birthday adventure

Fun cabin on the island. Plenty of room and fun layout for the kids. Large yard to run around in. The island is awesome. This was our second visit to the island and first time staying. There was some mice poop on counters which was a little concerning. I don’t mind mice and know it’s typical but poop on the kitchen counter means there wasn’t a wipe down recently. We also noticed some bees and wasps in the cabin. We got one outside right away. Then saw another flying high so hoped it would just stay away but my uncle ended up getting stung in the foot Saturday evening. We found two more that might and a few more Sunday morning. There are two hives on the back of the cabin I assume their climbing in.

Nice place

I understand check in and check out times, only thing I’d change would be checking in at 3 and check out at 11, but I also understand that that’s probably not possible with the location being on an island and needed to ferry on and off. Great little place though, we enjoyed it.

Good private location but not for us.

Adorable cabin with big yard. Wish we could have enjoyed it. Listing shows no pictures of actual bunk rm instead two photos of the same bed room with different bed spreads and angles making it hard to tell if it 'bunk'was the 'loft bed', as we thought, which was not the case. Second there is a big beautiful yard the dogs love but.... pet friendly is a bit of a stretch if your dog isn't small enough for you to carry up a legit ladder to reach the queen beds you may rub into issues. I have two goldendoodles who are 45 and 70lbs.... this was not the place for them unless I was to leave then sleeping on the main floor without us. Luckily we had alternative options while we are on the island so we actually took our dogs and stayed somewhere else while the family we were travleing with without dogs stayed at this cabin. And finally this is a beautiful place and clearly just not the one for us, I feel this is more fit for event such as weddings and then used as more of a honey moon sweet. Or even a single family with small pets.

About the host

Hosted by Sarah Luck Pearson

Host profile image
Sarah Luck Pearson and Bob Douglas built their dream cabin and lived on the island for 5 years before moving to California to be closer to Sarah's parents. They miss much about the island-- the great blue waters, the fine sand, the wonderful air coming across the ferry, the fun at Tommy's Burned Down Cafe-- but mostly cooking big dinners for friends and sitting around the campfire. Built entirely by friends and family, 'Billy's Bunkhouse' has a lot of love in it. Guests have noted that this feeling becomes a part of their vacation too.

Why they chose this property

We didn't buy this vacation home, we built it! The wonderful part of that was enacting our dreams. Bob would say, how bout a balcony?! And we'd do it. I would say, why not a pond off the front porch?! And we'd do it. Or an outdoor shower? And there it is! The result is a cabin that is customized for comfort and fun.

What makes this property unique

As for unique benefits of the house, the top loft is literally in the apex of the cabin, the bed in the top triangle of the ceiling. It's been called the Tree House or the Princess Bed as laying up there is so cozy and romantic, a place for enchanted dreams. At night, laying there with the windows open to a warm summer breeze, there is nothing better than to be lullabyed by the hundreds of 'Peepers' (frogs) that live in the nearby wetlands. It is also wonderful to just hop on your bicycle and peddle over in 5 minutes to Big Bay Town Park for a swim or a walk across the lagoon bridge to the forest boardwalk. With 20 acres surrounding the cabin, you feel great privacy and peace. And yet in 10 minutes you can be eating an ice cream in the village of La Pointe or dancing under the stars at Tommy's Burned Down Cafe.
