About this property

Relax and reconnect at our retreat on the Au Sable River "Holy Waters".

Welcome to our slice of heaven literally 100 ft from the famous Au Sable River. For those looking to spend time with family, read a book, fly fish for Brook-Brown-Rainbow trout, canoe or kayak or take in the wildlife, there is no place better than Northern Michigan, specifically the AuSable River Valley. Our cabin sits on 5 acres of wooded property and offers you everything you could possibly want to escape into the peaceful serenity that Northern Michigan offers. If you are looking to stare at the millions of stars at night, our cabin will exceed your expectations. The AuSable River Cabin is located on a prime stretch of the Holy Waters, a 'flies only', 'catch and release' section nationally recognized by people all over the world. Simply walk out off the back porch, wade into the river and experience fly fishing in our famed river. Feel free to enjoy the large deck overlooking the river or have a bon fire at night with friends and family.

The cabin is located within minutes from charming downtown Grayling where you can visit the quaint shops and restaurants. Other nearby attractions include Forest Dunes Golf Club which was just ranked #1 public golf course in America (10 minutes), Mackinac Island (85 miles north), Hartwick Pines State Park (15 minutes), Gaylord/Traverse City/Lake Michigan/Petoskey and many others.

Fly fishing shops include: Gates Au Sable Lodge (2.5 miles), Old Au Sable Fly Shop (9.5 miles) & Ron's Fly Shop (9.8 miles). All shops can supply, guide service, equipment & fly recommendations for the current hatch.

Since our cabin is located so close to thousands of acres of state land, discharging any firearms or fireworks on or around our property is strictly prohibited.

The cabin offers 3 bedrooms and one bathroom. The master bedroom has a queen bed while the other two rooms have oversized built in bunk beds. There are also 2 leather sofas in the living room. We offer a newly remodeled (2023) full kitchen which includes all utensils, microwave, stove/oven, refrigerator and a washer/dryer. All beds include linens and towels are provided. If you are lucky, you may see a Bald Eagle or Osprey flying up the river or perhaps deer in the back yard eating clover in the stream on the property. Our cabin's mission it to allow our guests to decompress with family, friends, or by yourself. Breathe the fresh air, listen to the river, sit by the stream and share space with all animals around the property. The cabin is on the river and in the woods so you may see bugs, you may have a "tick" hitch a ride when walking through the woods, so be aware and wear bug spray.

We are confident you will come back year after year!

Holy Water Trip
Meticulously clean, new and well kept! Very peaceful! Perfect for fly fishing. Lots of wading opportunities. Great cover in river both natural and man made. Lots of bugs , nymphs, spinners, flies and terrestrials. Plenty of fish morning, afternoon and evening. Big browns, feisty. We can’t wait till return. Host Dave was excellent and communicative. Wader drying hooks and fly rod keepers on cabin walls. We highly recommend to all Trout Unlimited brethren. The Ausable at its best for the wading enthusiast!

120 feet to Au Sable Heaven!
PERFECTION! Walk out the front door 120 FEE and you are on the Au Sable River! Everything is very CLEAN and well-appointed with quality sheets, blankets & abundant bath towels. A clean, comfy bed & a good hot shower are the basis of great accommodations! There are exterior fly fishing pole & wader hangers, a nice deck w/comfy seating, a picnic table, charcoal grill, fire pit as well as all the necessary equipment to keep a tidy yard for your 4-leggedmember. 😊 The living & dining rooms easily sit 6 adults. Bedrooms accommodate 6 adults & are crazy quiet! It is amazing how quiet each bedroom is with plenty of storage including hangars-Thank You! Packing hangars is a pain. There is a functioning wood burning fireplace which will make an Autumn or winter stay super cozy. The kitchen had everything you could ask for, allowing us to cook most of our meals right there-at home. A coffee machine, toaster, dishes, grilling utensils, full size refrigerator/freezer, cooking & even baking equipment. There is a full-size washer/dryer and the secret to light the range top while cooking is: turn on the laundry closet lights, slide the doors left & voila-LIGHT! Free Wi-Fi, a large TV & a hard surfaced foyer for easy clean-up & storage of shoes. The owners were helpful, kept us informed & answered any question immediately. We have rented accommodations all over the USA and this cabin has been the absolute best rental we have experienced! We highly recommend this as one of the BEST!!

The updates on the house were amazing, nice new kitchen, brand new washer/dryer and improvements on the outside of the cottage. Already making plans for next summer!!

Beautiful!
The property is right on the Ausable River and the house was immaculate! It had everything we needed and was very comfortable. The kayaking was great and we also enjoyed fishing on a nearby inland lake. We can't wait to go back!

Great cabin, great river
Just as described. Wouldn’t come back the same time of year but we would come back. Temps in the 80’s but also the qualifying and prepping for the Au Sable Canoe Marathon keep the river extra busy during our stay. Several local guides take that week off as it turns out. Ya live, ya learn. Great communication with host and check in to check out was a breeze. Loved how tranquil the property was (canoeing traffic aside) and it really is like the photos.

Cozy clean cabin
The property was immaculate and perfect for a weekend getaway on the river. The bunk beds were super comfortable as well. Or only issue was the gnats but that is to be expected in the wild.

Quiet getaway in the middle of nature
Very quiet location, right on the river. Cabin was clean and homey feeling. Very pet friendly. Our kids loved chasing the butterflies, looking for deer and playing in the Au Sable river. Host was very helpful with directions because google maps does not find the address. Host was also very accommodating with helping us find a spot to park our 22 ft boat. It’s a quick 25 min dive to Lake Margrethe, which is quiet and calm (and much less busy than Higgins) with a pretty good boat ramp. It’s about a 10-15 min dive to get into town where there are restaurants. Overall it was a great getaway for our family of 6.

It was our dream (well mine) to live on a trout river in Northern Michigan for decades. We were lucky enough to purchase two vintage log cabins that were built in 1935, sitting on 15 acres with ~1100 feet frontage on the AuSable River in Grayling MI. Susan and I spent 2 years restoring our cabins back to original condition with the help of our friends and family. We had visitors EVERY weekend and realized that we had a special place. Our cabin become a meeting place for friends that could appreciate the beauty of the property, loved the wildlife that walked their paths, took time to relax and be with each other, learn how to tie flies, cook over a bon fire, and many wanted to learn how to properly rig and cast a 9'6" fly fishing rod! Our family cabin, the SHAW PARK LODGE was born! In fact, we loved this lifestyle so much, Susan and I were lucky enough to purchase the property right next-door in 2022 so others could experience the beauty! Duly named, our "AuSable River Cabin" is a cute well outfitted cabin that sits 100 feet from the river. For you fly fishing nuts, many big browns (hogs) and brookies have been caught right in front of the cabin. This property has fantastic stream fed by artesian well and runoff headwaters running around the cabin. The wildlife love the fresh water, the clover and wooded cover this property has to offer. Anyone who stays at this property will leave with a new appreciation for Northern Michigan and taking time to breath.

Why they chose this property

If you love fly fishing, hiking, wildlife, photography, fresh air, reading, canoeing/kayaking, painting or just relaxing; this is the place for you. This is truly a family vacation spot.

What makes this property unique

The sitting benches at the river and stream is where I like to hang out to take it all in. The unobstructed views of the river from the cabin are fantastic.
