About this property

Beautiful waterfront barn home near Popham Beach, Dock and Mooring

Tucked away in the rural seaside village in Phippsburg, Maine, you’ll find the 1774 Inn, a historic waterfront estate steeped in natural beauty and authentic Maine charm. An 18th century manor house and 19th century barn are surrounded by native plant landscaping, vegetable gardens, and breathtaking water views. You might catch glimpses of seals lounging on the islands, eagles swooping from tall pines, stunning sunrises, and starry skies. It’s a place to gather and connect, whether you are celebrating your wedding, hosting a family reunion or just retreating from the hustle and bustle.

The Hayloft is a spacious and airy apartment on the upper story of the barn and features exposed wood beams, plentiful sunlight, and stunning views. Steeped in Maine cottage style, it’s decorated with vintage furniture, earthy tones, and local art.

With 3 bedrooms (2 standard, 1 lofted) and 1 bathroom, the loft sleeps up to 6 guests. The master suite has a king bed and a sitting area with the original sliding hay door-turned-picture window overlooking the inn’s flower gardens.

The living space has a vaulted ceiling, sitting area, kitchen, dining area, and reading nook. French doors open to a spacious balcony with a bird’s eye view of the entire estate, including the ceremony site, lawn, patio and river.

There are Adirondack chairs for lounging, lawn games for playing, and a fire pit for toasting s'mores. We also have a deep-water dock as well as a mooring for use during your stay. (Please inquire about mooring fees.)

Here, you’ll feel like you are away from it all--surrounded by nature and small town charm--but you’re only a stone’s throw from anything you could possibly need or desire. Just 15 minutes from Bath, 20 minutes from Brunswick, and 45 minutes from Portland. Popham Beach is just down the road.

Nearby attractions include a swimming hole and nature preserve down the road, kayaking, boating, golfing, restaurants, antiquing, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Maine Maritime Museum and more.

(Note that the manor house on the estate has 8 bedrooms for up to 16 guests and is also available for rent.)

Peaceful style

Our family of 5 had an excellent 3 night stay at this unique property on the water. It was a beautiful setting and extremely peaceful. Near enough to easily get to Portland or Freeport (or Boothbay) but isolated enough that relaxation is a given.....

Family stay in the hayloft

We had a lovely time staying in the hayloft. It was beautifully renovated and carefully furnished and the surrounding landscape was idyllic. We appreciated the proximity to Popham Beach. The children loved having the owner's dog come for a visit. We might have liked a large pot for cooking pasta and a strainer but other than that the kitchen was nicely supplied.

Tastefully renovated 3 BR Hayloft on peaceful waterfront estate

We had a wonderful few days in Maine staying in this beautifully renovated place.. Connected via a locked door to the amazing 1774 Inn, we were very impressed with the work performed to turn this Hayloft into a very comfortable and spacious 3 BR, 1 Bath part of the Inn. The owners were very kind and receptive to a couple requests we had. We would love to return one day and explore Maine even more.

Wonderful Lodging in Phippsburg

This VRBO was perfect for our family of four. The host was very nice and responded very quickly to all of our questions. The property was very clean, and spacious with amazing views of the river. The kids were able to fish and swim in a pond that was only a 5 minute walk away. There was also a public library a couple of doors down. It was perfectly located for little day trips, including Popham Beach which is a must visit! We had everything we needed and more.

Beautiful peaceful location

The location was just stunning. The apartment was beautiful. The beds were very comfortable. The host was slow to get the check in instructions to us which caused some unnecessary stress.

About the host

This is our home, our dream, our passion-and we'd love to share it with you. We feel like we’ve discovered something special: a place that is authentic, beautiful, and just enough out of the way. We hope to share with you a sense of discovery and the magic of this extraordinary place.

After working as a chef in Michelin star restaurants in NYC, France and Spain, Sarah moved to Phippsburg full-time to chase her dream of transforming the Inn into a destination for getaways, weddings and farm-to-table dining.

Restoring and stewarding a nearly 250 year old property on the National Register of Historic Places is a labor of love--one we're grateful to be able to share with you. There is nothing we love more than creating a beautiful space where families and friends can gather and connect.

We live next door with our dog and two children. We love to garden, forage, fish, hunt and continue exploring this incredible corner of the world.

Why they chose this property

Set in a rural seaside village, steeped in natural beauty, rich maritime history and authentic Maine charm, Phippsburg is something special: a place that is authentic, beautiful, and just enough out of the way. From the Inn, you can walk in one direction to the Totman Library, Historical Society, Thistle Dew Alpaca farm and Bisson's Center Store (THE town general store). In the other direction, you can walk to a nature preserve with miles of hiking trails and a large pond perfect for swimming, fishing and kayaking. Here, you're far from the hustle and bustle, but only a stone's throw from anything you may need. Just a 15 minute drive to Popham Beach State Park, 20 minutes to Brunswick, 30 minutes to Wiscasset, 45 minutes to Boothbay and Portland, and 2.5 hours to Boston. It's far from the hustle and bustle, but only a stone’s throw from anything you might need.

What makes this property unique

“If you're looking for a beautiful, authentic place....in Maine that holds on to what's real, what's special and what's slightly hidden, this is it.”
