Tavern On The Bay Resort is a New Jersey historical landmark. The Victorian-style mansion was originally built in 1884. It was a bordello during the late 1800s and then became a hangout for the infamous Nucky Johnson (for whom the show "Boardwalk Empire" on HBO was based on) during the prohibition days.
"This place was a brothel in the 1800s where mobsters would hide massive quantities of alcohol during the days of prohibition. A gangster was whacked in the basement after messing up on an order and a young wife hung herself in room 7 after catching her cheating husband with a whore. Also, there's a ghost in the attic and he locks the door behind me from time to time." - Sam Trocki, proprietor of Tavern On The Bay

We booked the Frank Sinatra suite last minute- and did not regret it! The decor is so eclectic and fun!! The space is big enough for 6 to sleep comfortably and access to the outside balcony was amazing! We loved the ease of getting in and out of our room to the car, having happy hour at the bayside bar and a fabulous singer in the restaurant on Saturday night. The fishing pier is right there, and was fun for kids to go out when they had a chance. It’s also really convenient location for putting your name in at the Anchorage or Charlie’s and heading back to the room to relax and walking over when your table is ready!! Cons- kitchen space is a little kooky but does have a toaster and a microwave - we really did not use it except microwaving oatmeal. (We got morning coffee downstairs.). The bathroom shower is a little tight but it’s clean. Overall, we really enjoyed the stay and would do it again!
