Wonderful Mountain House
We loved this house! The double primary suite layout was perfect for us - 2 couple’s traveling together. The sun room was our favorite spot and we really enjoyed the television and the surround sound system. We we’re visiting friends in Black Mountain so the location was perfect. We also drove to Asheville for dinner one night - very easy drive - about 20 minutes. Overall, we thought it was a wonderful place. We hope to return soon!

Nice place good location
Everything was great. Black mountain is a really nice town. Had a little trouble adjusting the heat but got it figured out. Of course it was freezing the first couple of days. Would definitely recommend staying here if you’re in the area

Best of both worlds
My husband wanted to stay close to town. I wanted to be in the woods, more isolated. This property fit BOTH! Furnishings were comfortable, kitchen was well stocked and it was very clean. We will def stay here again.

Relaxing and private
This property is private, spacious and relaxing in the woods. We had some some minor problems with burned out bulbs and a dirty toilet. The property owner was very responsive and noted with apology. Everything else was great. We loved sitting on the deck off the sunroom while the weather cooperated. We looked for bears and other wildlife and had no encounters.

Good for the price
Generally the home was fine. I think the description of the home is a bit overrated. It's quite dated, the layout is a bit strange (there's another review that talks about this in detail), and there were errors in the number of bathrooms hat were listed which was one of our primary considerstions for choosing this home. Otherwise, the location was great and communication with the host was good.

Relaxing Retreat
The house is as shown in photos. It was comfortable and had a very appreciated and generous supply of starter supplies such as hand soap, dish soap and paper towels. The owner was quick to respond to questions and called to see how our stay was going. The weather was exceptionally hot and humid during our stay, but the AC did a great job keeping the house cool. The Nest thermostat is easily adjustable with just a turn of the dial. The covered porch on the main level off the sunroom is totally surrounded by trees, has a nice table and chairs, and is a lovely spot for morning coffee, meals, or evening relaxing. The house is at the end of a very quiet Cul-de-sac shared with two other houses but feels very private as the other houses can't be seen through the woods. As was mentioned in a previous review, for pets there is no grass or lawn at all on the property. There is a flat area with gravel next to the garage that worked for our dog, or a short walk on the edge of the quiet street. On our first morning there we watched a very large black bear meandering around the driveway and street. Awesome! Highly recommend the Black Mountain Bistro for dinner. It has great outdoor seating, and the food is outstanding. Fresh Wood Fired Pizza and Pasta is very good, and also has a great covered outdoor eating area. The Flowering Bridge in Lake Lure was stunning, and we had a great outdoor lunch from The Lured Market and Grill. The streamside path from the Montreat Gate to the college is a great pet walk. Everywhere we encountered in the area was pet friendly. We would definitely return to Black Mountain again and would return to this house again. Thank you to the owners for being pet friendly!

Black Bear Retreat
Black Bear Retreat was our home in the woods for two weeks. We enjoyed very comfortable accommodations with a well-equipped kitchen, spacious first-floor bedroom with a very large walk-in closet and bathroom with a separate shower, soaking tub and vanity. The sunroom was delightful, surrounded by shade trees, making us feel as though we were in a tree house…a lovely place to enjoy socializing or reading. The location was ideal for us; on a secluded cul de sac, surrounded by beautiful woods but close to the interesting town of Black Mountain. Ed, the owner, was readily accessible by email to answer questions. The guest book in the home provides detailed information on operation of the Nest thermometer, the electronics (TVs, sound system, Wi-Fi) as well as restaurant reviews and places to visit. Would we stay here again...absolutely!

All in All a Great Place
We loved the place and location but feel some updating needs to be done. Both bathrooms and kitchen are out of date, the upstairs bath is small and cramped. Bath and kitchen towels are old, well used and stained - need complete replacement. King sheets/comforter set are outdated and the fitted sheet is too small for the mattress - had to put back on every day. Microwave is rusted and needs replacing. Even given all that, we absolutely loved our stay and location. The sunroom was my favorite room. We'd stay here again if it were still on VRBO.

Fall Break
Very easy process of renting the house. Our questions were answered promptly. It was in an excellent and convenient location. The house worked out great for the two families and it was very well stocked. The office was perfect to put the infant in to nap away from everyone. The garage was an added convenience. It was a “Great” place to stay.

About the host

Host profile image
I worked as an attorney in Miami. I am a licensed realtor and travel often cross country. I am 57 years old. My wife and I have been married 24 years. I am self employed and enjoy considerable scheduling flexibility. We like to get away on long weekends. Longer trips will usually happen in the Spring and Summer. There is also some time for us on spring break in March or Winter break in December to travel. We enjoy traveling to new places in our small RV. We have two beautiful daughters ages, 24 and 22. We enjoy the great outdoors but also enjoy museums and touring new cities. This home is available on short notice.

Why they chose this property

I was looking for a total getaway home that did not compromise privacy for convenience or space for amenities or views for location. Black Bear delivers more than your typical cabin in the woods. I can walk or bike into downtown Black Mountain for groceries or other provisions. I can park my RV out front or my cars in the two car garage. I can walk with the kids to the lake and the community pool. I can start hikes into the surrounding mountains within minutes from my home. I was looking for a place to relax and unwind to enjoy mountain sunsets from my decks and hear the sounds of nature and not the sounds of traffic or neighbors. Bird watch from my backyard decks. Eat your meals "al fresco" every night as you watch the sunset. I wanted to have a modern home with all the modern high tech conveniences. I did not want to settle for a 'Spartan' mountain cabin with limited or unpaved road access, internet access or spotty phone service. I wanted to have plenty of room for guests. I wanted a place to start my day trips into the Blue Ridge without having to worry about paved access, long winding gravel roads or adverse weather conditions. I wanted a home where AC in the Summer is strictly optional but four seasons can be enjoyed. Fall season at Black Bear is stunning and Winter season is mostly mild with some post card perfect snow showers.

I wanted a place within a day trip of all the Nature activities Western NC has to offer. Black Bear has delivered for me I know it will for you as well.

What makes this property unique

You are able to walk or bike to downtown or take your golf clubs cross the street and play golf at the stunning Black Mountain public golf course. A full service gym (Chesire) is a 5 minute drive or 15 min bike ride away. A picnic on the Blue Ridge Parkway one of America's most scenic highways is only a 10 minute drive away. Bring your fishing rod as lake Tomahawk is less than a 15 minute walk from the retreat. Go to Montreat and climb lookout mountain. You can take a casual stroll downtown to eat lunch at many fine restaurants or shop in the antique shops. Go to one of the many local festivals. Rent bikes at Epic Cycle downtown and do a mountain bike tour of Black Mountain start from your front door and take North fork road all the way around to old hwy 70 and Lake Tomahawk. Follow the golf courses back to Black Bear. If you crave more, the City of Asheville is considered one of the most livable cities in the US is at your doorstep. ( About 15 minute drive West on I-40 or US 70) Enjoy the incredible art and music scene in Downtown Asheville. Eat at the open air restaurants or spend the day at the Biltmore House. The largest private home in America. Tour the second largest art deco district in the US. Other nearby attractions include skiing less than 40 minutes away. White water rafting at the Nantahala River. KOA camping. Chimney Rock Park and Lake Lure is only 20 miles away. Grandfather Mountain and Mount Mitchell tallest mountain east of the Mississippi are less than 1 hour away.
